I notice that most of these etiquette rules, not just in dining but in general, actually are practical and not just something to follow to be “proper”. For examples, waving the fork and knife in the air would pose a hazard, putting the utensils back on the mat would be unsanitary, bending down too low can hurt your back (and also would be dangerous if you get too close to the food especially if it’s hot), etc. These are pretty much based on maintaining safety and hygiene.

that's because etiquette was first "invented" so that everyone can feel good when interacting with each other; now people use 'not wanting to seem stuck up' as an excuse to not have proper manners, so they end up being rude and crossing over people's boundaries

Too many restaurants I have been to expect you to keep your dirty cutlery, even when you have not one plate nor extra napkins on the table. I try to always hold onto my bread plate for this reason alone. I feel so comfortable and happy when the restaurant staff remove your plates, silverware on top, and either understand or bring a new set without even asking. A lot of people, staff and diners alike, do not know this; they are simply doing what they think is normal. 🥺🌹🍽 And yes, I am very certain this has only happened in America. I often just ask for new silverware if they try to have my keep it, and sometimes that request is met with hesitation. I think I've always been given a new set, though. 😅🌹🍽

Jamila, I would like to know how to gracefully deal with little accidents that happen while dining. For example, when you drop a piece of food, if you drop your napkin or cutlery by accident, if you rip a stocking or whatever clumsy mistakes that could happen. It would be fun to watch and very educational 🤣.

I am not well off or wealthy by any means; I am simply middle class. I never go anywhere fancy to eat because of this but I still use your dining etiquette lessons when I am dining. Things I have noticed is that when I practice dining etiquette, even if the common person or waiter doesn’t understand what I’m doing, I look much more feminine and put together and I’ve noticed that doing these things commands more attention from my date and I get better service from my waiters and waitresses. Home training and soft skills truly benefit any woman in any situation

In France, the etiquette says that fork and knife position in the plate also has a meaning. Crossing them like you did in the video means you have finished and... didn't enjoy your food 😛. Putting them in parallel means you liked it, and putting them perpendicularly means you would like to have the next dish. Making an A, means you are having a pause

For the people around us, it is fancy. My kids complain about having to learn to be fancy when no one else does it. My husband learned! He recently went to a business celebratory lunch and his friend/boss leaned in and asked my husband what fork he should start with :) My mom is Mexican but taught me the basic use of fork and knife as a kid (siblings and dad need etiquette classes!) I later learned the rest on my own. When we were dating, my husband’s family gave me the nickname “la duquesa” the duchess because I use a fork and knife lol.

It's not any magazine, for example a magazine for teenagers with a singer like Olivia Rodrigo saying her opinions about fast food in the comfort of her home. This it's a more relax environment, the goal is have fun, just following the most basic manners.

I feel like the latest generation tries to come off as unassuming, authentic and friendly but they have lost the art of many etiquette rules that, when you think about it, are in place for the comfort of everyone at the table - and for your safety clearly. This is a nice reminder, as I myself tend to take heaps of food in my mouth and then blabber on in case I miss out on the conversations being had 🙈

When I go to restaurant, I made a lot of noise with the cutlery when eating. It's very disturbing for others, I want to correct it, please give some tips. I would be grateful if you could please make a video about it.

im guessing you're indian, our people don't use a lot of cutlery other than spoons in our homes and some use just hands. going to a restaurant is an occasional activity and you can't build a skill without practice. try using cutlery at home for lunches for a week or two to practice.

There is. You eat it with your hands, but you take a bite, then put it down, wipe your face with a napkin… take a drink if you like… repeat as necessary, while conversing and alternating with your side dishes (French fries, salad, etc.).

All these etiquette rules an manners seems normal for me, like, i don’t understand why this is conciderate as fancy haha. I’m french and i think that these things are standards that are Inculcated since the begining (if you have good education at home) but without saying thats an art, more like it’s just a normal way to eat 😋

@@aleahcordoba4883 I'm from the US and as soon as we are able to sit at the table, in a proper chair instead of a highchair, we are taught these manners in my family. My 2y/o neice can do everything but hold her cutlery properly but that's just because she hasn't reached that level of coordination in her development yet. And she's not some little princess; she wants to be a dinosaur when she grows up.

I also noticed in the first clip the way she held her fork pointing up in her right hand while trying to use her knife with her left hand, it all looked extremely awkward. Loved this video, thanks for sharing your knowledge! PS: Quick question. I understand that when eating a "bite size" piece of fish or vegetable, it is easy to bring it to your mouth with the fork facing down. However, would it be correct to eat "smaller pieces" food like rice, ground beef, or even mashed potatoes with your fork facing up? What is the etiquette for these foods?

In the USA No but really In Europ ppl actually eat a certain way at fancy Dinner, at a normal Dinner you can be more casual but at a nice Dinner everyone Eats with edict. You shouldn’t use your knife as you gesture with your hands - it’s not nice!

Hey, Jamila. You're doing an amazing job with your videos. I can't get enough. I noticed in your dining etiquette video you held the white wine glass at the stem as to not warm up the drink when drinking it but here you're holding the white wine by the bowl. So which way is accurate?

At 9:38, she is holding it by the stem, a little closer to the bowl but still not covering the bowl. I guess even more proper way would be to hold the stem closer to the base
