Asphalt Roofing Shingles: Class 4 Hail Rating Explained
Find the best roofing contractors in your area: roofinginsights.com/directory
Comment Below if you have any questions about Roofing Shingles, we answer!
The type of shingles that a contractor pitches to a client are important. As is common in business, quality is usually commensurate with price. It’s the same thing with shingles. Without question, Class 4 shingles are the superior product, but each contractor charges different prices for them.
In this video, Dmitry covers the finer components of Class 4 shingles and warns of contractors who may be trying to charge as much as 200% extra for the Class 4’s.
We have broken down the explanation into four easy sections:
1. Cost - Class 4 shingles use SBS technology, which makes the shingles better resistant against hail damage. But note the “better resistant” label. These shingles are not hail proof, so if a contractor tries to tell you they are, and doesn’t include this language in their warranty, take your business elsewhere.
While the product costs more money, the labor to install this type of shingle is still the same. But some contractors may try to sell you that the shingle itself drives their price up exponentially. That’s simply not true.
If the shingle costs 10-30% more, the labor should appropriately follow suit by charging an additional 10-30%.
Northgate, made by Certainteed, has a good price on their shingles, but keep reading for why they still fall WAY short.
2. Performance - These shingles’ performance cannot be judged by the condition of the exterior. The Class 4’ s are more rubbery and also heavier, which is good for absorbing pellets of hail.
Brands like DaVinci and F-Wave have tested very well in rigorous performance exercises, but other brands also are more than capable.
3. Expectations - As a customer, you should expect Class 4’s to be the most superior product on the market. With that being said, they are still not HAIL PROOF. High integrity companies will emphasize this fact, but again, be wary of someone who casually insists these shingles will survive any and all blasts of hail.
As mentioned, check the terms in warranties.
Certainteed cleverly hides their warranty information regarding Class 4’s, but when you dig deeper, you’ll find that there is NO coverage for Class 4’s in “act of god” circumstances. This is a polite way of saying that when the heavens send hail crashing down on your roof, Certainteed will not be held responsible. And since they double their price for these shingles, it’s safe to say you should look elsewhere for your Class 4’s.
4. Recommendation - Disregarding Certainteed, Dmitry finds that other brands are comparable in value. As a customer, you have to decide if paying extra for Class 4’s fits into your budget. The price increase can be hefty, and if you’re not willing to make that sort of financial commitment, you may want to reexamine your roofing options.
Asphalt Roofing Shingles: Class 4 Hail Rating Explained
In this video, Dmitry goes in-depth about Class 4 shingles and what makes them different. From warranties to performance, he dives into what you really need to know about Class 4 shingles with examples from several brands. Does he recommend Class 4? Does he recommend certain brands?

I just started following you and I have learned a lot about the questions I should be asking . Thank you. I looking for a roofer in the South Florida area. I had a new roof installation done in 2012 by what appeared to be reparable company and they “ripped” me off, by not installing the shingles ( GAF) as indicated in their contract. When I call them , they came out once to do a repair; then I couldn’t get in touch with them afterwards. I’m so angry, they took advantage of me. Thanks to you and other research I know what to ask for and what to expect. Help! I need recommendation in the South Florida area?

As an insurance adjuster, I like your truthfulness of product awareness and knowledge. When you consider a roof covering is one of the largest investments in maintaining our property, I would like to feel confident in making the best purchase. I believe it to be plausible for you to provide "Roofer Ratings", kind of like consumer reports. This may encourage positive peer pressure for the manufactures to be more accountable. As an insurance adjuster, we sometimes observed manufacturing issues, such as a week bond that doesn't secure the shingles in a high wind. Like you we have also observed shorted nail fields on the shingles lacking in over-lap. Keep up the good work! Hutch Roberts, FL

I'm in Texas and I pitch class 4 for the insurance discount only. I tell customers that for the first 5 years it might have an effect on hail damage. But the discount is almost always worth it. I charge $30-40/Sq for the upgrade. For most people the insurance savings pays for the upgrade in 3-4 years.

Thank you for the great and very important information for our industry. It's hilarious how most Homeowners insurance actually gives there customers a substantial discount in there annual cost for simply installing something that doesn't keep its promises. Class 4 is all they want to see, Class 4 doesn't necessarily mean Hail proof but most paper pushers don't know that it's all a technicality for them. Pay up to 8% more for "impact" resistance shingles and save up to $120.00 per month on your premium.

The upgraded shingle isn't worth the higher price in hail prone areas. Hail storms are directional so while the slopes on the storm side may sustain damage the slopes on the other side may resist the less direct impacts. So, while all the neighbors with the cheaper shingles are getting full roof replacements, the guy who paid more for his roof only gets paid for half a roof by his insurance company.

I don’t supplement insurance companies or charge 100 to 200 percent more for upgrades. 10 to 20% is plenty. (ex Mystique) However, I don't like the dragon tooth look. Is this a better product than lets say the one I find more appealing like a 3 tab shingle "DAKOTA"? or am I doing myself a disservice? 3- What is truly the Difference between BP (Mystique 42) and (Everest 42) and (Dakota)? @@BrickWilbur2369 we had to pay 1000 dollars difference for the class 4 shingles. The first 2 years pay for the extra 1000 we had to pay for the class 4. So after 5 years we have saved 1500. 1000 dollar difference (first 2 years money saved pays the 1000 dollar cost difference) 500$ next 3 years makes for a total of 1500 saved over 5 years genius. Think before you speak.

I dont really get much hail but we live in pa we have cold and hot months. What's your opinion

FYI: DaVinci product warranty has the same exclusion of hail. 😔 "LIMITATIONS. The following non-inclusive list of circumstances will not result in a Permitted Claim;... Impact of foreign objects, fire, earthquake, flood, hail, lightning, hurricane, tornado or any other casualty or act of God;" I was disappointed to see that.

I have heard "hail proof" in this video we have to remember if you are selling hail proof shingles you are setting yourself up to fail. No shingle is hail proof remember the other name for class 4 is Impact Resistant, that is what you sale. Not all class 4 shingles are created equally
