Haiboxing Rampage 18859e Shock, DriveShaft, Steering Upgrades

#Haiboxing #HBX #18859e #Upgrades
This is a quick video on the HBX 18859e bolt on upgrades. The steering upgrade greatly improves high speed stability. I have been running my truck with the LiPo 2s 1100mah for about 3 months now with the stock esc with no problems. On my small track in the back yard, I get about 20 minutes run-time on a charge.

My son and I have a couple of 1/10 slashes that we bash and run at the park, but we're also thinking of making a really small backyard track for 1/18 scale. We have an indoor clay track in the area, but getting into racing is really expensive. We'll start in our own backyard and see how we like it. Appreciate the video.

    The short wheelbase and weight distribution really makes it squirrelly. We also have a Traxxas Teton, also 1/18, but the Teton handles so much better, especially on a backyard track. We also added the oil shocks, but the Teton was so much better straight out of the box.

    I haven't had a chance to drive the Teton just yet. However with my experience with most RC related stuff, weight plays a huge factor in performance and durability. One of the things I like about this truck is between ridiculous hours of both me and my son running them, we have literally had no broken parts. The vehicle is so light that on impact, the kinetic energy isn't enough to stress any of the parts in most cases. The down side it that it's a little harder to control because the rough obstacles in the terrain have more effect on the behavior and response on the truck. So yeah, it is definitely one of the harder trucks to drive, but at the same time, it really builds driving skill.

    My apologies. Yes, the green truck has the drive shaft upgrades and I have run them now for almost a year with no problems. I've also driven my son's truck with the stock ones with a LiPo battery, and not seen much issue, but it does feel slightly different. I imagine that is due to the flex of the shaft. The metal upgrades is more consistent power to the ground. It's a marginal difference, but on my track it is slightly noticeable, and enough to effect my lap times just a tad.

    So I found 2 different LiPo batteries that I like. However you need to get a low voltage alarm if you plan on running LiPo, or else you will destroy your batteries pretty quickly. I got one from King Hobby for about $3. Also have some larger ones I got from Amazon for about $5. They have a sounder and a bunch of pins on them. I put velcro on the battery holder arm and stick it on top. Then you just slide the connector over the pins. Most of these alarms are for 4-6S batteries, so you will only use 3 pins - the common, S1 and S2. Once you get down to about 3.2 volts, it will make a sound you can hear. Once it does it repeatedly, you know you are low and you can pull the battery. Now, as for batteries, I got the LiPo 1100 mah that is for the WLToys 979A truck. It will fit but you will need to move the battery arm hinge side up one screw hole. Now, I found an 800Mah battery that will fit in with no adjustments. It's not quite as fast, but still a great run time and they are cheap. Its a Zippy 800mah and I think I paid about $6 for each of them. I ordered 6 and it's more than enough to have a ton of fun for a couple of hours. Getting a good LiPo charger also helps and I got one off Amazon for about $40.

    I'm doing these for my Ratchet when I get it; all three (Ratchet, Rampage and Hail Storm) 1/18 run the same chassis from what I gather, so this is great; I'm also planning on doing the drive shafts. It's amazing just how much upgrade potential there is in such a budget RC. Now I just need to see if it'll be possible to switch the ESC/receiver combo out for an independent ESC and receiver, 'cause I'm not particularly thrilled with the transmaitter, and I have a FlySky pistol grip transmitter I really like (been using it play Re-Volt lol) that I can use if I can swap out the ESC,

    I agree about the radio setup. I've been scoping the possibility of a brushless for this truck, but a low Kv rating as more speed will make it fairly uncontrollable, but the extra runtime would be nice. I've also started running mine on Lipo batteries. However, you need to order a lipo voltage alarm while you have the stock esc, as there is no low voltage shutoff. I found one at HobbyKing for $2.50, but you can find them on Amazon for $3 to $5. Basically it starts beeping when the voltage gets too low. Once it beeps 3 to 5 times in a row, I shut it down and when I check the battery, I usually have about 5 -11% left above usable voltage which is a good shutoff point and safe on the batteries. BTW, If you like the background music, that's my Prog band, A Persuasive Reason. We are on all the major digital outlets - Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Google, etc... Hit us up with a like :-)

    @@kpnitrl38 The low voltage is necessary if you want your batteries to last. The thing with LiPo is that you are not supposed to run them below a certain voltage. If you do, it degrades the charge capacity and output of the battery. Also, LiPos can cause fire so, it's a good idea to maintain them correctly.

    Thanks for this great video. Your research and effort is appreciated, especially from someone who doesn't know much about this hobby. With the upgrades you've done, would someone who has never done any upgrades of any sort, be capable (limited knowledge and tools) of doing this? I had a A979, loved it, but sold it to get a bigger truck. Now I want a small one back. Am thinking, is this model truck still something to go for or is there something better at a similar price point? Thx

    You could do this mod fairly easily, no special tools required. This truck is smaller than the 979, and a little lighter, so it can be a little harder to control over rougher terrain than the 979. However it's nearly indestructible and that includes my husky and lab chasing it and stepping on it at high speed. It's just been a great little vehicle, especially for the money. Fun factor to dollar value is awesome.

    Great video. One thing I have noticed is that the servo response on the car is incredibly slow. With the servo off, the steering is free. However, with the servo attached, the range is pretty limited and incredibly slow, especially with any sort of resistance (ie. trying to steer on dirt/grass vs. asphalt.) Maybe I got a bad servo with it?

  • @tangerinepopgames

    @tangerinepopgames

    4 жыл бұрын

    Honestly, I haven't really looked into different tires. HBX makes several cars in this scale and the desert buggy design has a buggy style wheel, but I have been pretty happy with the stock tires on Georgia red clay which is what I have in my backyard RC track. I have torn down the diffs in the transfer cases to inspect them and the gears are all plastic. So I would be kinda weary about going with much larger diameter, or a tire with more traction. It may be too much strain on the diffs. Another recent mod I did was add about 60 grams of weights which really helped settle it down on bumpy terrain. I put 3 10g inside the front bumper cage, stuck 2 on the chassis under the steering linkage and 1 on the rear bumper. It's more balanced now and stays a bit more true over the rougher sections of my track.

    Hmm, I don't have it in front of my at the moment, but the truck is light enough that I would go with the lightest you can find. I have also tried baby oil with great results. Key is not to fill completely to the top, you need some airspace for compression. The way to tell is once you fill and close it, leave the spring off and compress the shock with your fingers. it should return to extended but very slowly.

    I haven't run these in a few years, but I do recall finding a servo. I think the wiring is a bit different if I recall, maybe 3 wire vs 4 wire. However I found what I needed at a large hobby shop. I did have to solder wires to a different mollex plug, but it wasn't a big deal. Depending on how crazy you want to get, I had a buddy mod one of these with an upgraded ESC which also made it a snap for swapping the servo. He also runs a brushless motor and it's stupid fast, like hard to control at top speed fast!

  • @tangerinepopgames

    @tangerinepopgames

    3 жыл бұрын

    No, the liquid from the table was from a drink I had earlier. When you fill the shocks, you need to leave some air space for compression. This is easily done, and I did it by testing with my fingers and compressing the shocks for feel. Basically, if they will not compress all the way, I take the corner of a paper towel and allow it to absorb a little oil out of the shock, close it and then try again. I tune them pretty much where they have a slow return to full extension on their own. This has been a good setup for the way I have been running the truck.

    The pushrods are 18014 and the shocks are 18601. You can find both on Amazon. Also, I just re-filled the shocks with new oil. I used 20wt rear and 25wt front but I'm guessing they came with 10wt or lower. If you are gonna run the car on the stock battery, you want to run 10 to 15wt, and for sure no higher than 20wt. However, if you upgrade the dog bones (18600) and run a LiPo 1100mah (you need the dog bone upgrade for this), that battery is a little heavier so you can go up in the oil. Something else I did was I got some 10g stick on weights from a local hobby store. They came in sticks of 120g divided into 10g bricks. I was able to put 3 inside the front bumper behind the lights, 2 underneath the steering arm on the chassis and 1 in the backside rear of the car between the axles. This brought the center of gravity back close to the middle FB and center LR. The added weight on the nose is why I went 25wt oil on the front shocks, with about 3mm of space on the spring tensioner from the crown. It seems to have made quite a bit of handling improvements, but I will do a thorough test tomorrow and see how accurate my tuning is on the track. I'll post a video of the upgrades soon as well. Have fun with your truck!

I highly recommend at minimum upgrading the shocks though. The stock shocks are just springs and cause the truck to bounce a lot. The oil dampened shocks greatly increase the performance and handling characteristics.
