    You have a very respectable tremolo picking technique - I've seen maybe 2 guys that can duplicate Eddie's technique which I think you could as well if you so chose to. Either choice is cool as we are individuals yes?

    I was butt hurt because my mom wouldn’t let me see the 1984 tour with Diamond Dave because I was too young. So I went to the 5150 tour just so I could see EVH in the flesh, and not expecting much from Sammy, but it was a hell of a show. They killed it.

    I was a big fan of Sammy solo and of Dave VH. When I heard Dave and Eddie were having issues, I told my friends I thought itd be so cool if Sammy became singer for VH. Well it happened and it was NOT what I expected, nor as good as I thought it would be, but I gotta say, I got to see them live in 86, and it was a phenomenal show! Sammy is crazy onstage (and up in the rigging)! Eddie was a big fan of Sammy’s work, especially with Montrose, and was quite complimentary of his guitar work. Obv he was a much better guitarist, as far as being adventurous and innovative, but Sammy’s no slouch!

    People blame Hager for the tonal changes in Van Halen. It was Eddie who wanted a more modern synth pop sound. He wanted to change the style and since hes an amazing musician he was entitled to do what he wanted. Thats why Dave left, he loves that classic rock n roll sound.

    Sammy playing the guitar himself and taking a solo every now and then only added to the diversity within the band. Someone’s on crack! While I’m a huge fan of both Van Halen eras, they were a better band with Sammy Hagar and the numbers prove it! Better composition and structure! They were tight with Sammy, not so much with Dave! Saw both versions live and both were great! But Dave would forget what he was supposed to sing, or didn’t sing at all when he should’ve! Sammy didn’t make those kinds of mistakes! Plus Sammy was a way better singer and it’s not even close! Dave was the better front man and it’s not even close!

Hagar was awesome, and the immediate chemistry with Edward was just crazy. Those 2 were meant to rock the World together. And they did. Hagar was so fun to watch play guitar. No Edward, for sure. But no one was, or ever will be. He's in a class all by himself. But Hagar was so good. Subtle and bluesy, and he complemented Edward so well. Man. What a Band. There will NEVER be another Van Halen. Nor will there ever be another Edward Van Halen. Period.

    Always loved Sammy and Edward's playing here definitely the red rocker held his own, the entire LwOaN recording is great to watch also contains one of the best eruption solo runs. You could tell there was real love in the band when Sammy was there I love Dave and early VH but they penned some killer tracks with Sammy too.

    1988 Monsters of Rock Tour in Washington DC. That is the most memorable part of the whole show. Sammy played first, then Eddie. Sammy would play something great, then Eddie would rip something off that was astounding. Sammy was really playing hard and Eddie with his trade mark smile would blister some amazing licks. The absolute BEST version of that song I’ve ever heard!!

    I first noticed Sammy's ability on Love Walks In. Ed is busy with the synth, so Sammy has to play Ed's pre verse solo, and my god, he sounded exactly like him. I saw them on the Balance tour and Sammy was incredible. If only I knew those two were barely even speaking at that time. You would have never have guessed it from the show though.

    Great video! I bought this video when it was released, and it is STILL one of my favorite concert vids of all time. Cool breakdown of this section. To be honest, I actually prefer Sammy's solo that he plays during Love Walks In, versus the Eddie studio version. Sammy's solo is more tasteful.

    Rock songs have solos and underlying power chords right? Mr Mike this is my question, if you're playing example in key of G major, and it switched to the A power chord, do you play the A note? E note? or C note? or either of those 3? Thanks for anyone who would answer this!

  • @TheArtofGuitar

    @TheArtofGuitar

    Depends on the situation. If you're playing the G major scale in a song in the key of G major and they switch to A5 (A power chord) you can stay in the G major scale and be just fine. There are 7 chords in G major and Am is one of them and since a power chord is neither major or minor it works. While staying in the G major scale (G, A, B, C, D, E, F#, G) during the switch to A5 underneath it, it would sound pleasant if you played a note from the A5 chord (A or E) but it's not mandatory. :)

    @@TheArtofGuitar Wow, so that means I can play any note in G major like G, F#, etcetera, on top of A5 without breaking the 'rules'. Is that right?

    @@r4v3nner it doesn’t matter at all what you play. I often play notes that aren’t technically part of the chord I’m playing over, because most people don’t expect it and it sticks out because of it. One of the things that makes EVH so distinctive is that he throws all the “rules” away and plays tons of notes out of the scale he’s supposed to be in. You don’t have to follow any rules because they don’t really exist anyway

  • @dan2007kohn

    @@jarlath6815 his question makes me think he’s learning the basics of soloing. You got to learn the rules before you can throw them out. I think just he’s trying to figure out what the rules are.
