Hacking State Farm BT Devices..Hack The Planet

in today's episode of hack the planet will talk about the State Farm drivewell mobile Bluetooth car tracking device and how it comes with the ability to use a development tool to reprogram it to do other things. I don't go into detail about what types of Nefarious things you could do with this I just kind of open the door so that you can see what's behind it and decide for yourself what can be done with it.

    Sure, your going to track somebody using a Bluetooth SOC with 32 megabits of memory. All you have to do now is stay within 50' of them at all times... kind of making it moot. In reality all you could really do is periodically track them down and collect the information saved which would include nothing because it requires a paired device with GPS and Bluetooth capability to provide the information.

    You hacked the shit out of that one Neo. Sems there is really very little of anything you could do with this, without having first "hacked" someones phone. And by hacking, I don't mean opening the phone case to show me the processor and memory chip inside the phone and telling me there is jailbreak software out there I can download.

    Dude makes a video for hacking something, then says, "I don't want to go into too much detail." Seems the best way to ensure you don't go into too much detail would be to not make the video in the first place. Apparently "hack" has been redefined to mean "take apart", these days. Great video man. Awesome. Didn't even bother to show the disassembly, which was the literal crux of the video. Just awesome.

    @@JackDanielRaps I enjoyed the video, but be real. It isnt a "hacking" video. At most, it is a hyper-specific type of "unboxing". Imagine making a video about hacking a Linux server, in which the person opens up the case, points out that it contains a motherboard, a processor, some RAM, a video card, a NIC, and perhaps other things, then ends the video by saying, "I'm not going to show you how to connect to this thing, or any of the things you can actually do with it, but trust me, if you google it, you can find some cool shit." Is that a Linux hacking video? I would contend that it is not.

    This is just a bluetooth SOC with a memory chip on board. It can't track you unless you let it. It gets all of it's data from your phone's sensors. If your bluetooth is off, it gets nothing. That's why SF makes you update your odometer reading manually every month or so.

    SF also uses your mileage updates to confirm that the device hasn't been out of the car or off for significant mileage. But definitely take it out for drag racing, drifting, demolition derby, etc.! Probably when the accumulated trip miles fall short of the odometer by some amount, that triggers a warning of some sort and/or lowers the discount.

    I'm curious about something re the State Farm Safe and Save system: A few days ago the system failed to record a number of my trips. I took about 5 trips that day, but only one of the trips was recorded. I would take a trip, then stop at a market, taking my smartphone with me, then return to the car and take another trip. I did this about 5 times, but only one of the trips was saved/recorded. I wonder what could cause this. I didn't make any changes to my phone settings. Also... 1] Is there some way for me to test and see if a trip is being recorded? 2] What triggers the end of a trip? Is it when your smartphone leaves the car, or when the car stops moving for a long period, or something else? Thanks.

    The three ICs on the board are an MX25R, for flash storage, and the Cypress CY8C63 SoC. The sensors that are part of the SoC are BTLE and an integrated temperature sensor. The third is my best guess: it appears to be an inertial sensor but has only a matrix of dot impressions on it's surface with a very small T of to the side. The T appears handwritten so I can confirm this device was created by a man approximately 4 inches tall or a machine that has the best marking software ever.

    Found one of these in my teardown bits-box this morning. Looks like they have removed the Bluetooth module in rev 6.0.1 and it's just the logger. I'm assuming you now send it in and some SW at State Farm analyzes the data over the entire recording period. There are a bunch of empty pins and test-points but no radio. The case is neat and will make a nice housing for something else though. Maybe I'll desolder the SRAM and stick it on something else...

    Really good review but i have some questions here. What is the task of microchip named MX25R3235F? Also from my understandings this device doesnt help to collect the car data. Its just giving a start the trip command to the phone and phone collects all the data. If thats true, start the trip command will be bluetooth connection between device and phone. Am i right here?

  • @JackDanielRaps

    @JackDanielRaps

    Well the chip is actually essentially like a little computer that can be programmed to do anything you wanted to do. It's limitations are that the only sensors it has is an accelerometer and gps.. it has enough memory to hold down any information you might need inside itself. So it can tell how fast you're going, and where you are at. Then chip itself was designed to take note anytime the accelerometer feels the car slowing down with heavy g forces. Or speeding up.. As far as the limitations of the device, there really aren't any limitations on this device. I could side load all types of information into it and make the device much more useful. I can take GPS snapshots and I could even easily add bluetooth connectivity to it so that it can communicate to a receiver when in range.. Why is this important?. because I can replace your receiver with my version of your receiver and if I know there's a place where you're going to be regularly. Say your house at night, or your work during the day, I can go up and visit your car to take the information without actually getting inside of it.

  • @JackDanielRaps

    @JackDanielRaps

    3 жыл бұрын

    Also, guess you're right it isn't really collecting car data except velocity data and GPS points. because it has GPS that means the thing go back later and see whether or not you are speeding where you're at. this is probably the most low tech version of these devices out there. If you get the one from GEICO that you actually stick into the ODB reader underneath the dashboard, you might as well just bring someone from GEICO with you in the car. especially nowadays if your car has Bluetooth connectivity because they could literally monitor your phone calls and everything if they wanted to..

    I see. Let's assume that company doesn't provide a device to us and it will be all about software. In this case company will inform the customer like "you need to start your trip manually(by yourself) via the software we provided to you" In this situation hardware expenses can be gone. I think that way because of the devices tasks can be replaced by a software that customers will use on their phone. Still did not understand why they developed a device in the first place if you have a software like that.

    It is just Bluetooth 32megabits of storage and a very simple bios chip. If you don't enable Bluetooth on your phone the trip will not be recorded. But you would have to use it enough to provide adequate data and manually report updates of your vehicles mileage, which you would have to deduct mileage of trips w/o. Seems it could potentially be a PITA and potentially risky if your mileage is ever collected. Although I'm assuming there's so margin of error for having maintenance done at a garage where they would test drive etc...

  • @BSnicks

    All it does is detecting your acceleration/deceleration. If you leave it idle for a while, it auto disconnects from Bluetooth. Try to play with it, and you will see that a tap will make it connect to Bluetooth again. All the GPS stuff is registered on the phone.
