@@westernvibes1267 The issue isn't really developers ego, some of it is don't get me wrong, but some hackers will pull a grey hat, hack the system *then* tell the company instead of approaching the company and offering their services to look for vulnerabilities so they have permission to do it instead of doing it with out permission.

Some cities have the lights set up that way already. It uses a special IR strobe device in the car to request a green light.

Why not just completely isolate the ECU from any outside connections, unless they are physically in the car with a lab top. The radio and climate controls should be a standalone system with its own external battery separate from the engines battery. That would completely destroy any possibilities?

Right, but car designers are security stupid, and that stupidity breeds stupid actions, like tying in an internet-connected radio and entertainment system directly into the ecu, because who could possibly abuse a direct link like that?

the theory would be to have read only variables accessible from the ecu, like rpm, oil pressure, whatever. the lazy solution is to link the internet connected thingy to the odb port and call it a day.

right. anything on the internet can be hacked. anything software or object can be duplicated, and can also be hacked.
