i think it made sense when it's happen in the 80's. According to wikipedia, they develop and sell a medical software in a floppy disk. To prevent reusability or replication of that disk / software without their permission, they wrote some code that would affect the computer without actually being too destructive. in my assumption, Their true intention was so the user would take notice and report it to the dev. if the user could prove they bought the software directly from the dev, they probably would fix it for them without any charge. if they cant, then the dev probably would charge some money to them. This was the era where the lisence key was not a thing yet.

I don't fully understand. They were selling pirated software but didn't like their software being pirated? If so, how did they target people who pirated _their_ software? or were they just hitting everyone? Did their own software carry a dormant virus essentially making it DRM? or what?

It wasn't pirated software, they developed the software but had a code that slowed down the computer of anyone using it, to make your computer run smoothly you should call them and prove that you bought the software from their store and they will fix it, if you can't prove your purchase then you are left with a faulty software. It's not the brightest idea to fight pirates out there but they weren't pirates themselves

This was during the time of "freeware" when you could get free "samples" of unfinished software from magazines like PC World to try out (a floppy containing the software was included with the magazine). Wrong. That's india. And the brothers didn't pirate. They created their own softwares and put in a code that would slow down the pc so the customer would have to talk to the Dev to fix it. If they could prove the purchase of the software Dev would fix it free of charge. And if it was pirated then they'd have to pay the program's price to the dev to fix it.

All the information about this is wrong. I have worked with them and they didn't know Jack about viruses. Their friend made the TSR (virus) and they just put their address inside. When windows came they could no longer use hex editors to change text so I showed them how to decompile and modify the windows resource file. I came to know later that they sold that software. The fprot anti-virus guy went to Pakistan to interview them. There is not a single programming or hacking book in their office. One of the brothers is a medical doctor. I feel sorry that they don't have the courage to come forward and deny this and give the name of the actual guy who programmed the TSR.
