You had me until you said that it had a 5 valve per cylinder engine. the 20v 4age didn't come until the mid 90s and was found in front wheel drive AE101 cars. 20v is a popular swap, but GTS and JDM spec Truenos both came with the 16v variant of the 4age originally.

clarification: The 4AGE did not initially come with the 5 valve head. it started off as a 4 valve head, and when talking about the 5 valve head it redlined at 8k not 7.5k . Please do more research next time❤️. extra clarification: When discussing AE86 and 4AGE please specify the 4AG you have in order to avoid confusion as there are 5 Bluetop 16v redtop 16v red/blacktop 16v silvertop 20v Blacktop 20v also the only corolla models to come with the 20v engines were the AE111 and the AE101

  • @Trussme96

I think the main reason they don't put a turbo on the 86 is the extra costs of r&d and warranties. If you add boost to a motor you have to redo everything from cooling, engine mounts and emissions controls to suspension, braking and chassis stiffening to make sure the extra torque doesn't ruin the handling and drive up warranty claims due to increased strain on components. Not to mention the target demographic they are going after can't afford anything more than 25 to 30k to begin with and adding maybe an extra 10k on the sticker to make a turbo version pushes buyers into STi, Supra and 400Z range. The car at its core is meant to be a rwd alternative to something like a Civic Si or Golf GTi which means anything that can be done to reduce development costs and keep prices competitive will be done. Sports cars are the least profitable products any manufacturer can make so profit margins are already paper thin if not non existent. I can tell you with confidence that the Supra probably wouldn't have existed in any form if not for BMW being willing to share a platform and drivetrain. If Toyota had tried to build it in house it would have costed the same as a LC500, had a V6 instead of an Inline 6 and the same amount of people would have bought it at Toyota's expense since most Supra fanboys can't afford a Supra of any kind anyways. Damn this is a long ass comment.

How about a shout out to the AE86's stablemate the AE85 Corolla SR5 with the 1.5 liter 3A-U engine. Back in my day (I'm 62) most of the Toyota guys raced the previous E70 Corolla SR5 with the 1.8 liter 3T-C engine, which was the go to Toyota tuner motor of the era. Other than the great 18RG(which you had to get via private importer). Though a pushrod engine you could tell it was a shrunken Chrysler 426 Hemi then cut in half. For most dudes the DOHC 4A-GEC was kind of too rich for our blood and the 2T-C/3T-C were and are awesome engines.

Giving it a turbo off-the-line would mess up what the 86 would be about. The fun with the 86 isn’t just about driving. It’s also about building. Slapping on a turbo from the factory would ruin the fun and freedom of figuring out how you wanted to build your 86. There’s a ton of power-adder options out there in superchargers, turbos, or swaps. A factory turbo would just put a huge constraint on that freedom.

Bruh, people that think the 86 should come with a turbo from factory are just missing the point, that would increase the price by a bunch and that also increases the weight. The car being NA is much better, because it gives more freedom to owners, people like me that want it NA can have it that way and people that want to boost it can do that with the aftermarket .

the main reason the gt/gr86 doesn't have a turbo is because it would be too expensive and it wouldn't be a cheap, fun, sports car

I think that the real reason Toyota doesn't put a turbo on it it's mostly because of 1 the reliability, Toyota it's well known for their reliability 2 the costs of production it would not be a cheap fun to throw around car a turbo would kinda ruin the feeling of it as well as they didn't put a turbo on the ae86 they'll most likely not going to on the gt86/gr86
