Something people need to remember is that, from the time Hachiman saved Yui's dog till this moment, it's been more than a year. For more than a year, since the start of school until the moment she goes into the service club, she seemingly has never spoken to Hachiman. From what we can tell, Hachiman is the weird guy in the class that no one talks to, with Kawasaki being the other one, and Yui is the kind of person that never breaks the status quo and goes against social "rules". You can really see how this perspective really feeds into Hachiman's decision to break things off and thinking that she is just being nice/feels pity for him.

Why I think for Yukino is healthier choice for Hachiman at this point of the story is because he think that Yukino never sugarcoating her word, and the exact opposite of what he think what a nice girl is. When Yukino making fun of Hachiman, what he heard is not she maliciously badmouthing him but seeing him in the same level he seeing himself or who think who he is. So when talking to Yukino Hachiman never have self doubt about his own identity. Yui is way more painful for Hachiman right now because he knew she is a people pleaser and what she did to him even it feel good at the surface it will always give him a self-doubt. And slowly would hurt him in the long run. Hachiman right now in the story is not the person who can take kindness from people who he saw not being truthful. That is why he more comfortable talking to Sensei or Yukino because they always pointed what his flaws are. With the way Hachiman right now it just really painful for him to dealing with a person that seemingly a social Butterfly like Yui and Hayama(the handsome guy) .

I love how hachimans logic here is full of falacies, but they sound completely logical when said. "If the truth is a harsh mistress, lies must be a nice gkrl, there fore kindness is a lie" immediately asumes the oposite aplies which is a falacy, bur it sounds so true

Now we get to the episode where we kinda see the vestiges of how deep hachiman’s trauma actually runs. Remember that bet they had at the start about which person can help the most people or something as part of the service club? That bet is still on. The “first” time hachiman helps someone( rescuing the dog ) he gets physically hurt and broken emotionally due to isolation. Imagine what he does to help people in the future.

Still one of my more favorite episodes of this series. It also shows just how far 8man has fallen into putting forth this persona of the edgy lone wolf and desperately trying to buy into it himself as a way of protecting himself

When watching this show for the first time in middle school, I remember feeling really seen, during scenes of 8man explaining his views on relationships, like the one at the end of the episode. It took me until rewatch at beginning of my collage and context of further events to understand how sad and distorted those views are.

Hachiman is the most relatable character for me. Because I also have same problem as of him. I am afraid of getting hurt and hate nice people because I think they are just nice because they are pitying on me.

There are several reasons that saika ranks so highly on character tier lists for this show he never tries to lie he says what he means and is nice because he's nice not for any other reasons

This episode will always hit hard for me man. For more than 10 years this was my EXACT mentality, i just couldn't accept that people could possibly like me in any way shape or form, it made no sense to me and it cost me opportunities, friendships and more. Great discussion, i have a big attachment to this show due to the topics it handles and you're legit the perfect person to talk about these in depth!

Sick analysis. Love your take on this series. As you have mentioned, it's a very character driven show that appears to be very real, at least feels like it. Even though I have seen everything, I'm sure a bunch of stuff went over my head. So can't wait to have more videos explaning what I've missed lol

Third time I comment on this series and it's only episode 5. Oregairu really is a nostalgic anime for me as it was one of the first ones I watched when I got into the medium during high school. I can only speak for myself but I liked Yukino and by extension her ship more than Yui for relatively simple reasons back then. I simply found her more attractive both visually but also personality-wise. I never was one for the bubbly extraverted girls and even less so back then. Not too surprising, considering that the girl I was in love with at the time was in some aspects quite similar. Rather introverted, reserved, seen as ice-cold by others, at least somewhat similar physique, etc. Though I outperformed her academically. The show felt somewhat like a very exaggerated mirror at the time. That aside I'm really looking forward to your assessment regarding some future characters and how you'll evaluate the result of the show itself.

Your videos/streams really need to reach more people. Not only with this show, almost all of your videos have that gravity that pulls viewers once you started cooking. I've been a silent watcher and follower since this channel's first ever video, but I just joined the discord last year, half of the reason was because Oregairu finally made it in the polls.

Granted, I don't have the most experience with people, but with what experience I do have, I have to agree with Hachiman here. When someone is nice to everyone, they're either completely genuine or fake as hell, with no in between. And it's the one's who are fake that completely break any trust a person can have for another. I'm much more trusting of a person who is blunt, or hell, even an asshole because at least they won't lie just to avoid conflict or go behind your back and say mean shit.

As they are now, it might be hard to see how certain things could play out but, this show has some pretty dynamic character growth arcs through its 3 seasons. That’s all I will say, till we are further in. Trying to stay vague

How dare you note giving +5 to Yuki for the "Nya" scene! Jokes aside it's still really interesting and enjoyable to watch you appreciating and enjoying the anime while analysing it. I hope you liked ep 6 too but given what we have in it I doesn't fear too much, the anime more or less finish the exposition at that point and we have a really enjoyable moment in this one.

Hachiman probably knows the self-doubting thoughts like the "nice girl" speech is wrong but cant help but accept it as fact during emotional moments, thats probably why he started to open up in the first place. Once he is able to justify those self-doubt thoughts he goes full relapse, sub consciously always looking for a way to piece together the worst case scenarios first. he kinda reminds me of ishigami. Im excited to see more of this show and your thoughts on it.

Current yui /yukino is very bad ship for 8man since is barely has any understanding/closeness with them. Btw the peak is yet to come for hachiman and you will get to know more things about him, may be the shipping at the end of season would be better. And i am sure you will have so much analysis to make, you may need help from light novel readers.

If you like relationships based on false expectations and lies, you will love yui ship. Unfortunately the anime was bad at explaining this especially in season 3, the relationship between Yui and 8man will never work and will always be lies, not being straightforward and lying might be a good thing to not hurt each other but it's not something Hachiman is looking for. Btw I'm not talking about this episode, I think Hachiman was the wrong one here, but I'm talking about the whole story, although I'm not sure you'll realize that unless you read the light novel with their internal monologues. There are many reasons why the oregairu community who read the light novels really hate Yui
