I love the bike riding around town. I think Ninh Binh should concentrate on that as it's a beautiful area to ride in with all the karsts nearby. That restaurant against the karst in the middle of nowhere is super cool! I love that it's away from the crowds/tourists and you get a nice scenery while eating.

100% - we were in Tam Coc for 4 days and we went riding our bike every day as it was that beautiful! Yeah that restaurant was really nice and super cheap. I’m surprised more tourists don’t go given the incredible views. It’s also not super far out of Tam Coc. We’ll be recommending it to people that’s for sure!

You shouldn't do the boat tour in Tam Coc because there are lots of scams there . I recommend the one in Vân Long , the scenery there is much more gorgeous , less touristy and there are no annoying insistent beer/snack vendors . That spot is wilder than Tam Coc or Trang An and is a hidden sanctuary for birds like cranes , storks , teals , etc...and especially for endangered langurs .

Other than the rude woman at the floating market we loved the Tam Coc boat ride to be fair. Ahh we’d not heard of Van Long but just googled it and it looks beautiful - thank you for the recommendation. We’ll definitely try that one next time we’re in Ninh Binh! 👍

We found tipping a bit hard to suss out in Vietnam. They don’t really have a tipping culture, and some restaurants tried to refuse tips when we offered them. But at the same time, it felt weird being a western tourist knowing that £5 or £10 doesn’t mean much to me but might make someone’s day in Vietnam. For most nicer restaurants we generally didn’t tip as such but maybe rounded up a little. For the super cheap local restaurants where you can get a meal for like £1 something, we sometimes just paid double if they seemed nice. For tours we tipped based on how helpful they were, and how nice they seemed. Probably averaging VND 100k (from both of us) for something like this.

@@shotinthedarktravel You are right tipping is not in our culture , but sometimes it's very appreciated . In restaurants if you like the service , you can tip them about 5 to 10 % of the amount on the bill . For the boat trip you can tip the rower 40K-60K VND for 2 people if she or he is nice and helpful . Those workers don't make too much money on each ride and they are not allowed to work every day because they have to share the job with other colleagues. Depending on the season , they can work only every third day to every second week . That's their rule in order to be fair to all the other fellows in the village . The rest of the time , they work on rice fields or animal farms .
