    I work for an Emergency service in Kansas. We recognized it on the east and west coast and began to prepare. Several years ago we became equipped with Narcan. I used it twice on the same person in one day. That was yesterday. In the last two years, we have seen a massive increase in overdoses and deaths primarily linked to Fentanyl which is another opioid they usually mix with heroin and inject. Or sometimes they chew the slow release patches. There is actually a huge risk to first responders now because the powdery substances can be inhaled and absorbed by accident when working on an OD patient. So, many crews carry Narcan specifically for themselves. It's scary as shit. I ALWAYS check for needles, and powder on the floor before I take a knee and start bagging an unresponsive person.

    As someone who goes to a reputable pain management doctor, some of these “pain clinics” are real and not just a front for pill pushing drs. They’ve weened me off painkillers in a safe way, and drug test every month and make you sign a contract that you cannot get prescription pain medicine from any other doctors (if you have to go to get your tonsils out and need pain medicine for that your pain management doctor has to be involved and know about it and THEY write the script so they can monitor it) There are a lot of shitty doctors out there but there are some great ones that saved me from having to take heroin to help my pain.

    Mike Hawk I feel your pain, literally. I’ve been on pain management for years and the crackdown has made getting my meds every month so stressful it only exasperates my health conditions and causes me more pain. All of this propaganda is hurting real people with real pain. There are cancer patients at my clinic who can’t get their pain meds now because of this nonsense. It’s not real scripts that are the problem. It’s fentanyl from china being sold on the street.

    People are just sadder I guess. Don't know why per se, but there's just so much more suicides, od's, people disconnecting from the population (hikikomoris and shit). Plus imho glorification of synthetic opioids in pop culture plays a HUGE role in overuse of those. And that shit more or less is going all over 1st world countries.

    so many factors influencing this its impossible to list them all. Lack of spiritual belief, lack of support for people who feel out of place in society, lack of good role models, lack of trust on a massive scale, fucking disgusting amounts of greed and mind control from corporations and industries, destruction and removal of "natural" earth environments. All of these getting worse and worse daily. I think its natural for people to feel bad about what's going on, but the real problem is the lack of knowledge on how to deal with these issues, and the degree of reliance that the general population has on substance to alleviate these pains for them. We'll hit a tipping point soon enough, and who knows where it goes from there.

    Because staying in your room and playing video games is so easy for our generation and we don't get out and socialize. People stay at home unemployed and get depressed because they don't have a purpose in life. If we get jobs back in America people will have a job to support their family and feel happy about themselves. And sucide rates will go down and people will start to learn that drugs are bad. Even marijuana in my opinion, cause it gets people going down the wrong path. It's a gateway drug that teenagers and adults are using to get high and try to escape lives problems.

    I've never seen any of these pain clinics you're talking about but as someone who is prescribed pain killers I gotta say they aren't that easy to get. I've had to get multiple exams, x-rays, physical therapy and see a pain management doctor who is the only one allowed to prescribe me pain medication. Plus pharmacies are linked and can look up your medications. So if you just recently got a fill they won't fill another. I have to see my doctor every 3 months, they will only write the 3 scripts and all of them are dated to the fill date. Laws have majorly cracked down on everyone. Seems to me that ever since laws have gotten harder on everyone it's done the opposite of helping.

  • @MrMikeauto0722

    @MrMikeauto0722

    It's gotten so much harder. I use to be able to just call my pharmacy once a month to get a refill. Also the pharmacy carries a limited supply these days so if you're due for a fill and they don't have it, you'll have to wait. You could try another pharmacy but most doctors won't allow it and if the pharmacy doesn't know who you are they'll most likely turn you down. I can understand some restrictions but it has gotten so hard. Not to mention that people with chronic pain who don't abuse their meds usually get treated with a certain degree of stigma regardless.

    i was in a serious near fatal head on (60 mph) about 20 years back, i was on hydrocodone for nearly 15 years, i quit cold turkey, it was hard but i did it, about a week ago i had to go on for an ouppatient surgery where they had to cut me open, they made a 4 or 5 inch incision in me without any kinda pain meds, cleaned out the wound, stuffed it full of gauze (that i had to remove the next day) and they did not give me any after i left, i just had to rough it, i am in so much pain, but i guess this is what happens when druggies abuse them, it makes it hard on those of us who really need them. my doctor said to take some ibuprofen. im in my 50s, been through hell and let me tell you, it sucks to not get it when you need it.

    It's not really pharma right now, most of the pain pill addicts have switched to heroin because of the massive crackdown on pills. In the past 8-10 years there has been a massive lowering in how many opiates are prescribed because of pressure from the DEA put on doctors. The big problem is heroin now which is even worse then the pills.

  • @Hals

    @Hals

    Yeah this is old news. As in, they finally (after big outcry) changed some laws and appearently it's actually hard(er) to get pills now. Hence people make the switch to cheaper Heroin or Fent. The supply got cut off and they are still addicted. + It's way cheaper. Not everywhere, but in some states this seems to be happening.

    That's not really it though. As you can see, the line that really spiked recently is synthetic opioids. Specifically counterfeit Fentanyl being sold on the streets for cheap, and also Fentanyl being cut with other drugs, like heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines, and even fake prescription opioids that are pressed and sold with Fentanyl. Fentanyl is over 20 times more potent than Heroin, so it leads to many unexpected overdoses. Heroin is bad right now in the US. But fentanyl is why synthetic opioids deaths are so high. Heroin is an opioid derived from morphine (a natural opioid found in opium from the poppy plant), unlike Fentanyl, which is a synthetic (man-made) opioid. So it's in a different category.

    I've been taking opiates since 2011 due to an accident I was in involving an 18 wheeler. Some people rely on and do not abuse prescription drugs. But due to the massive backlash many doctors do not just throw these drugs at people anymore which is good. However this has also caused issues making doctors afraid to prescribe these drugs at all forcing people to seek other options.But people who deal with chronic pain every day rely on some of these medications. I myself have tried several types of weed and medical cannabis and it honestly does nothing for me. I have more negative side effects than anything else. So until something new comes out it is what it is.

    At exactly 1:55 what you were saying really resonated with me. I even had a similar conversation with my grandfather about statistically comparing average debt and average payments per month from 1970 to now. Just for a loaf of bread I'm paying an extra $2. For $1200 a month my grandpa was able to afford an 3 bedroom 2 bath house in Colorado. You'd be lucky to find a studio apartment at $1200 in Colorado now. I some how was still yelled at and called over paid and ungrateful. Most people my age don't even rent apartments, we rent rooms now. We can't afford loans for houses. We know that when we try to retire social security won't be there for us, neither will it be even for my parents. We're even being punished for not having health care. And if you're in a similar boat as me, you make too much to qualify for government health care, but would go broke if you had to pay for private health care. So now you're stuck in the loop of not having healthcare and being penalized for it, but knowing it's more affordable for you to just get penalized for it... But if youre penalized too often you can go to jail... Jesus I'm getting depressed just writting this out.. wonder why these stats have drastically increased *thinking emoji*

    Nooooo, Ethan. No. No, no. It's not prescriptions that are driving the surge in overdoses. It's almost entirely because of elicit opioids like counterfeit fentanyl and heroin, both of which are extremely cheap and easy to make. Actual abuse rates of legitimate prescription opioids are pretty low and haven't changed in decades of their availability on the market, and the vast majority of the overdoses that involve prescriptions are due to a combination of prescription and elicit drugs, and they almost never involve people who have actually been prescribed those drugs for legitimate purposes. I love you guys, but your take is based on misinformation.

    Uh pain clinics don't do that. Actual pain management does not do that in the slightest. We need to find a way to help addicts up front and long term and find a solution to opiate overdoses and overprescribing without hurting chronic pain patients. I'm not going to say I'm smart enough to know exactly what we need to do, but we cant let chronic pain patients suffer and kill themselves. I have intractable pain bc my spine and all my joints are crumbling which started when I was 22-23 out of the blue, so I dont just need a certain amount of opiates daily to have a life worth living that isn't just bed bound and screaming in pain, I need to be on opiates to control my pain so that the amount of adrenaline my body produces because of it does not affect my heart muscles too quickly and give me a heart attack, which is how many intractable pain patients die anyway in their 50-60s - and still with the medicine i am on, most of my day has to be in bed because opiates do not take away all of the pain. I'm in pain in my dreams, that started about 2 years ago. And even with opiates, chronic and intractable pain patients know we will still always feel the pain, it just makes it bearable, and that's all we are asking for so that we have a chance at seeing our family and doing things we enjoy and having memories to look back on. I am terrified that one day my doctors will have their arms twisted because of the opiate crisis to the point where they will no longer be able to give me my Rx, and I don't know how long my heart will last after that.

    my doctor cut me off cuz he got mad at me... he pretends all of a sudden nothing is wrong with me and I didn't do anything I was honest and had proof and did a urine test. He let me sit for an extra 2 hours and told the staff to let me know I get nothing. I was tossing and turning for days without anything. He was a cruel vicious psycho. This is terrifying to me since he saw all the 37 years of medical records I have showing pain, falls, broken bones, arthritis, neuropathy, scoliosis, and muscle spasms, muscle pain, joint pain, leg length descrepency, muscular dystrophy, and progressive worsening condition... yet he acts like i'm normal all of a sudden.. i hope the abusers had their fun cuz its affecting my life and all i did was go to one outdoor event (all summer!! i should be allowed to enjoy some recreational time like other humans) it required walking and i have a cain and so I ran out 1 day early which happens all the time and his own P.A. told me he was impressed I had good control yet the doctor who has always been a maniac tells me I lack control. Not to mention my meds were stolen by a friend and i haven't had a social life in years cuz people judge the stigma is so bad now. I can tell the judging people have never taken pain meds when you hurt it doesn't give you a cure or make you feel euphoric it takes some of it away but its not that great at all. I heard euphoria is only experienced by drug abusers cuz they take it and have no pain happening so the body produces the feeling of euphoria because it doesn't know what else to do in the body... why can't these doctors stop abusing their power and take real pain seriously. I'm so lucky my primary doctor saved me but this has been a hellish experience for years their mouthy P.A. (the other one) said no one needs pain meds only people who had failed back surgery...thats ignorant, reductive, and down plays every nerve muscle and back problem people may have! plus i had 2 failed hip surgeries at age 10...i was a kid having both my hips put back in the socket and nearly died from pancreatitis... yeah i'm just having fun...my life is a total party.. not to mention discrimination against disabled people we get cut out of normal events cuz no one wants to be near us... and we ask for help for pain and yet we all of a sudden are normal? society lost its dam mind! no soul anymore no humanity...most of all no common sense.

I spoke with an older man from san diego with this, and he told me that ronald reagon closed a lot of treatment facilities in the 80's. He also told me that some farmaceutical companys made millions by getting people hooked on strong legal drugs, and when the presciption stopped, many people wanted the same effect, and went to take illegal hard drugs. If his story is only partly true, it is still a very sad story...

It is awfully convenient for the government that conspiracy theories are seen as insane and laughable. People who theorized about widespread government surveillance were laughed at and mocked repeatedly until it was proven to actually be happening.

    Last year my mom "overdosed" on prescription drugs. Her doctor prescribed her these high doses of anxiety medicine and sleeping pills. She took the right amount and never missed a dose or took more than her doctor told her. The mixture of drugs messed her mind up and one night she committed suicide. She would NEVER do that if she was in her right of mind. The drugs messed up with her brain and she most likely was sleepwalking and did it with no thought. We tried to sue the doctor but it didn't go through. These doctors prescribing these drugs at high dosages are killing people. No one should have to go through that, not even my worst enemy.

You literally just walk into a small drug store and ask one of the doctors for a certain medicine and they'll sell you it, that easy. But it has to be a small little drug store not one of those company drug stores.

    I think this is an issue that needs more looking into but, you can get codeine over the counter in most of Europe, Canada and I'm sure other areas of the world. I would like to see those stats. Something is wrong with America. Its not the drugs or the sale of guns that is making things worse, its the people.

    but isn't that a good example of what I am basically saying? There problem is the opposite of Americas addictions. The chart he shows has cocaine, meth and such, as a lower death rate than opioids. Legalizing drugs make them less interesting and not taboo. The fact that NZ is having a problem with meth proves this point. Meth is illegal ,Tylenol with codeine isn't. People in NZ can freely get Codeine products any time they want to but they are more drawn to something else. This proves what I said before. Its people and not the substance.

  • @dirkjewitt5037

    @dirkjewitt5037

    I'm not comparing one drug to the other, what I am saying is that blaming Big Pharma on everything just doesn't make sense. I'm stating that I think people need to be held accountable for their behavior. I was also wanting to know the statistics on drug deaths from other countries not just the US. I agree that the drug industry needs over hauling and some of these companies also need to be held accountable. People have been getting impaired since probably before they figured out social engineering. And I do have an idea of what I am saying. If one society seems to be able to curve their appetite for death and another doesn't, then that says a lot about what is going on in those societies. In the US there are a lot of drugs that have been deemed harmful to its citizens, codeine being one of them. So if it is bad in the US then why isn't it bad any where else? Dude, Kara, why isn't this a logical question and how do you find it an argument that a 12 year old would make? There is a problem in the US and I don't think its just guns or drugs causing it.

    As a former heroin user. It deeply hurts me to see this problem continue to grow and grow. I've been clean and sober since February 2015. Coming up on 4 years clean and never been happier! I started on prescription pain pills that I got from an illegitimate doctor when I was far far to young to be taking my own "health care" into my hands. I heard about a crooked doctor in town who would write me prescriptions for nearly anything I wanted. I went in at 15 years old. My first appointment the doctor said "ahh so you have back pain huh? How about 3 of the 10\375mg Norco a day sound. You need anything else?" And that was the beginning of the end. I went through years of legal trouble because of the awful decisions I made while deep in my addiction as a young man. And I dragged many others down with me during that time in my life. I fully take responsibility for the poor choices I made and now try to give back by managing a transitional housing unit (halfway house) where we hold meetings and provide a safe and comfortable place for those who need it. I know I probably just sound like another crazy person rambling in the comments section but topics like these remind me of how I got to where I am today. Thank you.

It's not just now. & they don't give you shit like that anymore. There is no "unlimited supply" for a prescription. I have scoliosis that can't be fixed. Ibuprofen has killed one of my kidneys. Pain killers are sometimes the only thing that helps, even with smoking weed & taking cbd. They DON'T prescribe these like they do anymore. I have to go into my doctor once every two weeks to make sure I'm taking the 60 pills I'm given correctly. They do it with everyone. You're late on this. This would've been correct 6-2 years ago

When I would see my doctor(actually multiple different doctors over the past 15 years) I'm given nothing more than ibuprofen. Meanwhile, I've had friends who complained about general back pain, and were given potent opiates, without limits. Some doctors are honest and adhere to good medical practices, while others are more like customer service representatives, looking to make their patient happy.... or it's caused by kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies, giving doctors a financial incentive to dispense opiates.

I'm not the type of person to "wish death upon someone" if it's a petty thing like having a differing opinion. He's a terrible person, and not just to me. Secondly, I was trying to make the point that "innocent people are the ones that suffer." Look at all the past deaths this year: Stephan Hawking, XXXTemtacion, and now him. Also, what about the whole school shooting trend as well? Now look at all the overall terrible people, they're pretty much living successfully. Sure, you can hide behind the fact that my point was terrible, I wouldn't blame you for that. Just trying to reply with a decent response.

    Jag Ram what the fuck are you talking about? I’m gonna assume you just mean narcotics and even more specifically pain medication. Ok, here’s why you are wrong. Surgery and post surgery. Then there’s chronic pain. Thousands have it so bad they can’t get out of bed and many are young developmental children. For them to go grow and live life, they may need pain medication to help them grow up and move on with their life after the pain goes away.

    Even the DEA no longer believes in the gateway drug theory. It's not the result of using drugs that leads to people trying stronger, deadlier drugs, it all comes down to vulnerability of the user. If they experienced something traumatic or are currently suffering some kind of mental illness they are more likely not to care what happens to them and try narcotics. In the case of teens it's about social maturity and how susceptible they are to peer pressure that determines if they'll use drugs early in life. Other then that I've been a pothead for 10 years and never felt the need to try narcotics.

    The problem with pain as a health care provider is that pain is subjective so we can't say if a patient is really experiencing pain or not and we really have no clue the intensity of their pain. I'm in nursing school right now and it's being shoved down our throats that we can't tell a patient if they are experiencing pain or not and to give them their pain meds if they are prescribed. It is sad and it's such a hard issue to tackle because nurses are are being told to give pain meds anytime the patient wants them (within the proper dosage). Great topic to discuss and always love your videos guys!

    I would disagree with blaming doctors for “handing them out like candy”, many addicts will go to several doctors at several different times to get opioids. When one doctor won’t prescribe them, they go to another ER doctor complaining of pain, until they get a new script. I saw this first hand while interning. Now why aren’t pharmacists able to see how many times a patient has had an opioid prescription filled? Many doctors now, because of this crisis, only give 30 day supplies and in lower dosages. We’re also becoming more and more of a society that just wants a quick fix to a problem. Have back pain? Just pop opioids that will fix your problem.... in reality, physical therapy is what you need but then your health insurance won’t cover it and you can’t take off from work 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

    I’m sure there are doctors that will prescribe pain meds like nobody’s business, I just feel majority of the problem isn’t one doctor prescribing it to one patient over and over again, without losing their license, and without seeing repercussions. According to a study I read for my MCAT, doctors will prescribe antibiotics for viral infections like respiratory infections when they feel pressure from the patient to do so. I believe that’s true for opiates too; doctors don’t want to lose patients, get bad reviews, or have anyone question them for mal-practice, so to avoid this, if they feel the only way to keep their patient is to give them opiates, they’ll give them to the them. Now who is to blame in that scenario? A patient pressing a doctor to give them opiates because they’re a self-chosen addict, or the doctor that doesn’t want to lose patients? 🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s a societal problem

    I agree and feel where you are coming from. Multiple herniated disc and pain managements want to only give you the weakest kind of opiates which doesn’t work for people who has been on painkillers for an extended time. There are still docs out there that will give oxycodone and will help your parents out. I was driving an hour away at one point to my one doctor who gave me about anything as long as your passing drug test. Tell them just to find an old doctor who is new or has reviews of giving out medications. Younger docs are too aware of how addictive they are and unless you have cancer or something serious; you’re not getting opiates

If you’re gonna blame anyone it should be my mother. Not a child that OBVIOUSLY didn’t get taught any better. And, how do you think half of these people get addicted to pain killers? Cause they’re prescribed them. Most people start out doing them because they need them. I’m sure the ORIGINAL use of opioids wasn’t as innocent as you think. I’m sure there is something else in this world that could be used to help with pain. Something that isn’t as addictive or strong. Don’t be so judgmental about people that are addicted to drugs. Don’t just assume that everyone that does drugs is some useless loser that could never (or has never) contributed to society. Cause if you want to say all that then, think about this, how much contributing is someone doing that is in so much pain that they need to take that type of medication? It’s basically the exact same thing.

    Yeah for someone who is too immature to handle money and can't balance fun and real life, it can be bad. Some people just love the high and want it constantly, and the immaturity part comes in when your mind wants the high and you cant discipline yourself enough to save the money for something more important. I think it's OK if someone can prove they can use money for bills and other important things and still get high and take care of responsibility. It becomes dangerous to someone who has little impulse control and maybe they had generous parents and the person is used to getting money given to them or they have a sense that life is easy cause they havent had to deal with it yet.

    I think a big part is accessibility. the internet in particular. people are more connected and you can buy anything on the web these days (legal or not). we can connect with people we don't even know, if we want something. it's just a few clicks away to find someone that has connections. There's also an uprise of drug culture in music and social media. many kids see their peers and favorite celebs self medicating and making it seem cool. Kids are impressionable. also the fact that mental health in young people is becoming a bigger issue and many of these kids don't know how to help themselves so they take drugs to take the edge off and end up in a worse state. I myself have bipolar disorder and psychosis and for the first few years, i felt helpless and i could only gain some control if i self medicated. this of course was an awful idea but i didn't know ay better and saw no other option. it was so easy for me to get ahold of substances and the young culture around me saw it as a normal thing. Kids have always broken rules and done something to get a buzz in one way or another but now we have more access to worse things. its a complicated mess really. mental health, laws, the internet and youth culture as well as gang and money making all play a part and i'm sure there are many other things too
