H1MIN: KH-9 HEXAGON
Ғылым және технология
U.S. Hexagon KH-9 reconnaissance satellites were designed for wide area search and were the last U.S film based satellites. Declassified in 2011, the clever and complex optical-mechanical systems brought film back to earth for military and intelligence services during the cold war. This provided the U.S. with very good intelligence on adversaries and other areas of strategic interest.
On loan from the National Reconnaissance Office, one can be seen at the National museum of the Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

Phil Pressel’s is a former employee on the design of the Optical Bar system. His blog is a pleasure to read:

Much appreciated!
"They found where I was held prisoner with a spy satellite... One of them KH-09s. This baby, it shits out a film canister 12 miles up, then a C-130 comes by... pffft... Snags it at about 30,000 ft. This was not the digital age. This film had to be processed, analyzed and delivered... All by hand." - Frank Woods (I knew it sounded familiar!)

literally first thing I thought about
So well done, as always
Could you please make a video on tank gun stabilizers? I would really like to comprehend how they work, however I have found the online explanations a bit difficult for a layman like me
Ngl, I thought the thumbnail showed a knife so I was so confused
I love your work mate, however, I have a question. What tools do you use to make these models and are there any sources a beginner may learn this from? Could you at least release one tutorial for us? Great to have you back!

@@GBR9794 dude there are so many tools used for instance a combination of sometimes SketchUp + illustrator + blender. Manuevering through these tools might be complex for a beginner like me and thus I decided to ask what tool offers depth and is worth learning in the long run and simultaneously provides quality output. I just need an answer that offers depth. I don't need to explain myself further 🤦

@@byson8628 tbh you should prob start learning a few of them and then decide it for yourselves. also, it would be better asking people who works in modeling / creative industry for that to get general feels of it than someone that just works for KZread production.

@@byson8628 Everything that he makes you could do in "Blender" for the 3D (free), For the motion graphics aka 2d animations I would recommend "After Effects", For the editting i would recommend "Davinci Resolve" (Free). I have 8 years of editting experience and 4 years of 3D experience wich is currently my job. For tutorials, Blender start with the Blenderguru Donut tutorials, the other programs no idea wich is a good tutorial series. 3D however is by far the hardest thing to get the hang of! Hopefully this helps! Much love, Dinkelwinkel

@@mrdinkelwinkel Thanks Dinkelwinkel!
Never heard of this till now. Simply fascinating. Well done Sir. Always look forward to the next one.
Beautifully done sir! I was just entering college in 1973 and wanted to enter the field of remote sensing from aerial platforms. I ended up starting a career at a national laboratory by mapping their facilities from imagery taken from an aircraft. Oh how I would have loved entering Mr. Pressel's gravitational field earlier in life. Another book for those interested in this field is 'Secret Empire' by Phillip Taubman. 'History makes you smart, heritage makes you proud.'
Hexagons truly are the bestagons
Really hope that your channel was named Military History in an Hour. Thanks for your awesome contents!
Your channel is for me one of the best on KZread with your short and concise explanation and extremely good visuals, i wish you would get more recognition for your work.
Stellar topic and production as always :)
This is why I love watching vids, such detail and depth in such a short time.
I love your content. I keep sharing this with my friends every time.
Good stuff as always! Great to see you upload again, I really enjoy your work! My only gripe: should be H1HR, because I could watch for hours!
I hecking love this channel, remember the first vid I saw here when looking up info about HESH rounds. Keep up the good work :)
This is so cool! Thank you for making these videos.
Great video as always H1MIN
You make amazing videos! I hope loads more come in the future c:
Fantastic video as always. Looking forward to see more!
Beautiful animations and models. Great video.
Awesome as always. Thank you!
Watching your stuff reminds me of the old days of the military history channel 👍🏼
This is the best thumbnail. Awesome job as always. Wish you could upload more often, it's a sight of beauty.
wow great video really worth the wait

Awesome Videos, keep up the good work!
It's a good day when h1min uploads
It’s holiday whenever this channel uploads
HE IS BACK BOYS
Great work !
love the cold war stuff, more please :)
this channel is great
Love your videos ❤. What software do you use to make these amazing videos?
you consistently publish great content. Maybe consider waiting a while before posting more, so that you have enough to publish once every week (at least for a month or two) I heard it improves your chance of growing your audience.
Fantastic!
great channel
Frank Woods mentioned one of those in Call of Duty Black Ops 2
FINALLY
1:16 - Intelligence officers, bringing reentry vehicles to Pentagon: - "This is a *bucket* " - "Dear god..." - "There's more." - " *No...* "
Very cool video as always wish there was more! I was wondering if you would consider doing a video on the LSM(R)-501-class Landing Ship Medium (Rocket) with its 10 continuous loading 5-inch rocket turrets.
I went to a talk about this Satellite a few years back from one of the designers, very interesting stuff
Yess Sir...Captain on deck...
Awasome! Keep it up
Ive read about various aspects of this system, but was surprised to see how much of a Rube Goldberg machine it was. Incredible
This is almost more impressive to me than more modern digital satellites. All that money and effort and engineering to send film-based cameras into space, with color and resolution we today would consider subpar, with the end result of the mission being only four (large) spools. So much energy for four spools... spools of utmost importance to the intelligence community. What a fascinating time in rocket science history.
Amazing! But please also present data in metric units.
Wouldn't mind longer videos
Bravo!
Funnily enough I first learned about this when I first played COD black ops 2
Finally!
Out of my normal field of interest MHIAM, but you've just increased my knowledge of satellite intelligence 10 fold... all in the space of a minute. Exceptional work as ever. Many thanks.
would be pretty cool to see a google maps-style compilation of all the film taken
Hello! You think you could make a video on the heads up display of the Blackburn Buccaneer? It was one of the first aircraft to have such a thing and I've always wondered what the displayed information looks like.
Cool
Ayo very interesting, c u in 3 months
as geology student I'm fu king cry now especially this 1:30 (my eyeeee)
This is incredible. I love seeing what was accomplished with old, rudimentary technologies.
So basically, the old school camera to rule them all?
We need more of this.
Can you do one for the star shell rounds?
Can you do a Video about German WW2 U-Boat decoys like the Bold or Sieglinde? Would be much appreciated! 😊
Grandpa engineers did the coolest shit.
GOAT
yeeeeeees
Same one mentioned in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
Dayton Ohio mentioned
About 30years ago , I saw a satellite photograph taken over Saint Peters square in Rome. It was at a slight angle not straight down . A man was walking his dog , it was possible to see, it was a poodle and not some other breed of dog . If they could, do that then , what can they do today with all the advances in technology ?

There were also GAMBIT satellites that did more detailed photos but I did not research those.
Awesome as usual ....what do you do for a living man? Do you work for Disney or something? Never seen such high quality stuff elsewhere..wish u were a bit more regular ..thanks a lot for this wonderful piece🙂
wait... you are saying someone could do a google map out of the images declassfied if digitalised...

DUUUDE ANOTHER MHM!!!!

This is the shit that got Woods caught and tortured by Raul Menendez

Should’ve just used google maps 🤦♂️
1:10 minor speaking error?
should have noted out of 20 attempts only 1 was successful
What resources do you need to make more of these?
this is the first time heard about this.
