Im an American and was finishing Ian Toll's first book in trilogy, and it mentioned that this song was played while burying Japanese sailors at sea in the aftermath of midway. So I had to look it up. Rest in Peace to all sailors who died in that war.

Thus for the sake of the Emperor, I will not die peacefully at home. Seems a bit more militaristic, but read the translation of "La Marseillaise" so time.

I don't think this was ever the national anthem. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was a war song written during the Meiji period

Umi Yukaba was never a national anthem, but a poem written over a millennium ago and set to music in 1937. Wildly popular from that point, it became an unofficial anthem of the militarist state responsible for some of the worst crimes of the century, by our modern standards at least

This song was written in the 700s, 1300 years ago. The era of the first Emperor.
