I am gay, and never once after coming out has a medical professional sought my wife’s opinion on anything. Yet before I was out, everything I did was somehow weighed against the needs and desires of an imaginary “future husband” without regard to my health or safety. Misogyny at its finest.

Yeah, same. It's like someone needs to stand up in front all past, current, and future medical professionals or everyone in world and say the following or something to this effect: "I am a human person and I own my uterus. No, no one else decides for me what happens to it and no man or child can rent it or any other part or sum of my body. In the past I never had doctors listen to me when I told them I couldn't possibly be pregnant, even when I was in middle school. It wasn't until I got the Nexplanon implant that people listened to me when I said it, but ONLY if I told them I had it. Definitely not the same thing since what you experienced was paternalistic, misogynistic bullshit, but sort of similar in that a lot of medical professionals don't seem interested in listening to cis women or female-presenting people when it comes to reproductive things.

At one point, she managed two jobs, college, and the kids (two young adults, one still a teen) all by herself (husband isn't really helpful unfortunately). When my mom tried to get her tubes tied 29 years ago the female nurse gave her a lecture about how she would regret it. This is about how the convo went. Nurse "You might want more kids someday." Mom "Nope, just the one." Nurse "Your husband might want more." Mom " He is also good with just the one, and left the number of kids to me. " Nurse "You might get remarried and your new husband might want biological kids." Mom had to report the nurse to the male doctor. He was very angry and had a talk with the nurse about how out of line she was. He apologized whole heartily to my mom. Btw my parents are still happily married and thanking God they decided on just one child. IDK what this nurse expected my mom to do, form her life around the wants of an imaginary second husband's? Also, why are we still having the same issues 29 years later?

Thats so awful, Im glad they didnt do that to my mom. She had her tubes tied after my brother, it was a difficult quick birth with bleeding issues. The thing that gets me is that from what I hear, if young men want a vasectomy it isnt challenged. (I know guys who have had them at 20) and yet a girl even brings it up/or a hysterectomy due to endo and even female docs can go 'well but what about more kids'. It shouldnt freaking matter to someone who doeent own that organ in their body. Like what about not dying, being in pain, or truly not wanting more kids? Its awful this still happens to us women so often.

I just switched doctors again earlier this year because when I asked the last one about it, the OBGYN said, "What if you meet someone some day that wants them?" I'm almost 35 and have never wanted kids - pretty sure I know what I want by now. Why should a *potential* partner's wants override mine? There were multiple occasions when I would ask questions out of genuine curiosity for a teenage girl and I was brushed off as if I didn't need to know about how part of my body worked. Worst thing was when I had to be swabbed for a test and rather than explain and try to get me to relax, as I was already nervous, they just went ahead with the test. I left that appointment traumatized and to this day I am afraid to go to an obgyn for fear of this happening again. This happened when I was 17 and I am now 23.

30 years ago my Mum went in to have a hysterectomy which had been recommended to her on medical grounds. When prepping her, the hospital advised they would need my Dad's signature on the consent form to confirm he agreed to her having the hysterectomy. My Mum put her foot down and refused point blank for them to even pass the form across to him. She told them that it was her decision whether or not to agree to have sex, it was her decision to be on whatever version of birth control she had been taking for the previous 10 years and she had never needed anyone else's permission for any other surgery that she had been through, she did not require anyone else's permission and she would not allow them to make a mockery of her right to make a decision about her own health. I definitely teared up when you said, “this is why people don’t want to go to the doctor.” It’s such a double-edged sword; I get told to go to the doctor if I’m in pain and then when I go, get told that my pain is “probably just my menstrual cycle” or whatever. But if I don’t go, I get spoken to like a 5 year old the next time I decide to go because my pain is so bad. Never ending cycle. I wanted to ask if you’d do a video on endometriosis. Or point me in the direction of a good video or website with some actual good advice and facts. I’ve tried to do my own research and everything is so random. One doctor says this and one person says that. It’s hard to find someone to trust and someone to confide in. Thank you for these videos.

Yeah, I'm waiting on a diagnosis, but even if I don't have endometriosis, I've still suffered severe pain for the past 14 years. But of course, I thought it was normal, because everyone tells you that period pain is normal. My mum tells me (despite her best intentions) that I might just have a low pain tolerance. But even if true, that doesn't mean I don't deserve help. Even my own Doctor dismisses it. One time when I had gone to the doctor for a check-up and the doctor asked how I was doing and I said I felt a little depressed from things that was going on in my life, and from my period pain. She responded with "Well we all have period pain, so there's no use worrying about that." I've also spent the past 2 years trying to find the right medication without giving me side effects, because the doctor and I only made the connection recently that a condition I had since I was 12, was caused by the pain medication I have been taking... since I was 12. It's been tough trying to manage it all, but I think I've found the right meds now, at least I hope.

My uncle and I are both nurses (he works psych and I worked geriatrics before medically retiring) and run into this problem constantly with healthcare providers crossing the line of dark humor and just making the patients the butt of their jokes. It is making good nurses leave the healthcare field because they don’t feel like they can speak out about it without being ostracized. This needs to end. Thanks for making this video MDJ

I have had them before...my snot is neon green and stinks...I'd just like an antibiotic please...'. It made me ashamed to even go in and I didn't until I had influenza which she treated the same and gave me a pregnancy test. I wasn't even sexually active. Yeah, the stress was the doctor not wanting to check my ears and getting paid for guessing.

I trimmed the story, but it's a wild ride. Back in 2018 to 2019 (just before the new year's day), my appendix exploded and it gave me belly cramps during hours, so my parents drove me to the health unity (it's not an hospital, but it's the gateway to one). I was literally crying in pain, not being able to properly sit and having trouble to even breath, it's not a common sight for a fully-grown woman in pajamas to be crying and clinging to a graying mother at 2 AM, right? So, after half an hour, the doc said to my mother who entered with me because I wasn't being able to properly walk: "Are you sure she isn't pregnant? We can go check it, the ultrasound machine is being used now, but we can put her in the line, maybe it will take 20 minutes" She flatly said "she is just fat", (I think I said something mid-groan "my belly has folds, pregnant people don't have folds, do they?") he seemed to be in shock for a moment, like he didn't know what to do, then he asked if I was in college and I said I just got accepted, so his answer: "she is just stressed a bit, I'll give her some painkillers and you can go home", my mother insisted to do a little exam just to be sure nothing was wrong, but he refused, justifying that many teens (I was 22) came to the health unity saying they were in pain, had insomnia and other problems due to stress related to school. I was almost buying it since I was in fact under stressing times, but then my pain struck fully and I started to puke bile, just then he reluctantly decided to give me an exam to see what was wrong with me. Well, I survived, did the exam on the following morning, got to the hospital, got my surgery done, spent the new year's eve at the hospital and got home on the following day. But I still think: why did I had to literally puke in the front of a doctor just so he could bother to make an exam in my belly, since he seemed eager to do that when he thought I could be pregnant? Like, he really wanted to do an ultrasound just to see if I was pregnant, but after we (me and my mom) said that I wasn't, he just pretended it wasn't necessary? (let alone the fact I could have been examined for pregnancy in 20 minutes according to him, but had to wait about 5 hours afterwards, at least the painkillers knocked me asleep for most of the time) I mean, how many adults you see hunching over and holding back their tears because of pain to the point their need help to walk? I know some people can be overly dramatic (or have low tolerance for pain, which is my situation), but I think it was... An experience that I don't know how to classify. For a bit of context: I'm Brazilian, being barred from doing exams isn't the norm. Delaying it isn't uncommon, but it's very unlikely to happen when someone shows up in pain. Also, we don't have medical/hospital bills to pay, so this isn't a form of "treating the poor folks like trash".

It depends on the birth control and the kind of migraines. For example if your migraines have an aura (sensory stuff, usually visual, before/during a migraine) it's recommended you go with progesterone only pills to reduce the risk of them becoming worse. Obviously that's assuming that your hormone cycle isn't causing them and various other factors. Some of the combination hormone birth controls have different effects on migraines and obviously hormones effect everyone differently.

I noticed that an obgyn is more likely to talk to you about it and weigh the benefits vs the risks with you than a GP/family practice doctor. I started getting the impression that GPs are more-or-less told "people that have migraines can’t take birth control because of a risk of blood clots and stroke" whereas obgyns are more likely to know the nuances of it. It’s incredibly frustrating because while I don’t want to suffer a stroke and I take the increased risk seriously, I can NOT function and live my life when I’m having migraines 3 weeks a month.

Yes to all of this. I used to work in EMS and now I'm on the clinical side. EMS providers are notorious for saying really awful things about patients and having "dark humor". Its not ok to degrade someone because you need to let off steam. Patients are people and every person deserves respect. If you don't want it said about your momma then don't say it about someone else. I see a lot less of this in the clinical side and its so refreshing.

I live in Georgia and had to give permission for my husband's vasectomy. We had 6 children; 2 with a rare form of dwarfism....our oldest and youngest. I had just given birth about 3 weeks prior. I was 37, he was 38. Though, I knew I was already extremely stressed and could not handle having any more children; I still sat in the parking lot and cried while my husband was having the procedure.

There are multiple forms of HRT so it is worth trying other ones, it might be worth getting a referral to a Gyenicologest who specialises in Menopause, especially premature menopause. HRT is not to stop menopause (that happened when the ovaries were removed) but rather to help you manage the symptoms and to help reduce the risk of side effects of premature menopause. There is probably something which you can tolerate it might just take a specialist to find it.

I was 19 when I got pregnant with my son and even being almost 20 when I had him, I was still treated as though I was 12 and didn't understand anything. The doctors I had were very condescending, they often spoke to my mother during my pregnancy instead of me. Even today I often get asked if I'm babysitting and when I say he's my baby people get very uncomfortable and say, "oh okay, you must be married at least?" There is MASSIVE judgment for young parents, more often than not people assuming I'm a bad mother or I'm less of a mother because I'm young.

That sounds like the doctors that see me for chronic pain. They treat me like I'm 5 and always talk to my parents, not me. "How long has your daughter had this pain for?" and I always want to scream "SHE DOESN'T KNOW! THEY'RE MY FUCKING LEGS ASK ME!" They dismiss my theory that I have fibromyalgia (my mom and grandma have it and I'm a girl) like I'm a 5 year old saying 2+2=22.

I was 18 when I was pregnant and an ER doctor asked me what I was going to do to provide for my daughter. At the time I was in school and close to graduating as a Medical Assistant and was going to nursing school the next year. He rolled his eyes and laughed and said that I’d never end up going to school because kids are inconvenient and that I’d never be able to provide for my daughter as an MA, as well as that I had no reason to be excited for a child so young. I’m only 21 now and my daughters a little over 2 and I’m married to her father and I’m a nurse and we’ve always been able to provide for her and ourselves. And I got through nursing school despite his judgements. Medical staff can really suck.

I just wanna say that when I got pregnant at 17 and went to a doctor that wasn't my usual, she was so so nice. When I came into the room I immediately started crying and she knew what was up. We did the ultrasound at which she saw that I was actually 19 weeks along already. She wasn't judgemental at all and after that she talked me through everything and talked about options. She told me that if I wanted to keep my baby that's great but if I don't and want to give it up for adoption that's is also great. No pressure at all. She even was as nice as to not charge the pregnancy because here in Germany you can only charge one pregnancy per quarter and since she wasn't my normal gynecologist she told me to go to my doctor the next week since it was Friday because I lived quite far away from her office and especially in the last month it would be too much to always drive there. I'm just so glad that I went to that doctor because after that I felt much better about it. I was so scared of being judged by the staff but that didn't happen at all. Still think it was the nicest thing to nit charge the pregnancy since I would have had so much stress fixing that with my insurance company

My cousin also got pregnant at 17 and she went to the gyn completely undecided on if she wanted the baby or not (she was just short over a month when she noticed) and they were so incredibly professional about her situation that they did the ultrasound with her and didn't even say things like "baby" or that they can see "it" on the ultrsound. She told me all they said was "we can confirm that you are pregnant" (in deutsch wars "Es liegt bei Ihnen eine Schwangerschaft vor" also noch neutraler) informed her very neutrally about her options and only when she had decided to keep the baby a few days later they started saying words like "embryo, baby, infant, etc" and showed their joy for her.

One day, they might wake up, and realize with deep regret how they feel about those jokes and it could plague them for a long while (seen that happen). But me? I won't have that issue. I'll be working on dreams and goals I have. Books I want to write and places I want to see. Plus, their opinions aren't the ones that matter to me, it's the kind and compassionate people I do find in my life that deserve that respect. Don't be scared to discuss your medical issues, you could be risking your life, since autoimmune diseases typically have no sympathy or patience.

When someone did finally come in, without bothering to ask my history or comfort level with my dad there they said, well youre not pregnant! Honestly i didnt even know how people got pregnant. We went to a different doctor who explained the imbalance of my hormones in detail and put me on birth control to try and adjust it. Now at 35 im on birth control to block my periods because i went from never having one, to a period of heavy bleeding that lasted 6 months before we found one that worked. Same, not to mention my digestive system was going nuts with the nausea and vomiting that period pain was causing (and super large doses of Ibuprofeno and other over-the-counter painkillers). I wish I had started taking birth control sooner. But all the villainization of the pill and the idea that it's only for people who have sex really kept me delaying the decision until I couln't take the pain anymore.

Thank you Dr.Jones. I am a RN and that personally is also a peeve of mine too. It's important to remember compassion and professionalism. I would hope the same for my own care.
