Gymnocalycium BUDS & FLOWERS: Pollination Technique for Closed/Unopening Cactus Flowers | JULY 2021

A selection of Gymnocalycium Cactus Plants in my indoor housed collection where I show the flower buds forming and somecof them trying to flower!
footage filmed From Spring through Summer so far upto end of July 2021.
VIDEO FEATURES THE FEW GYMNOCALYCIUM THAT HAVE DECIDED TO WAKE UP AND GROW BUDS SO FAR THIS YEAR!
Flowering has been hit & miss with temperature and weather, with buds dropping too!
🌵🌼🌵(There will be separate videos on other genus of cactus that have been flowering in due course... turn notifications ON so you don't miss when I upload new videos 😉)
SO I HAVE INCLUDED IN TODAYS VIDEO...
A Pollination Technique to manually access gymnocalycium Flowers that will not open, or ones that do not open wide enough to manually pollinate...
I try a Technique I've seen done by many others to try to pollinate these sort of flowers.
OVERCAST WEATHER, RAIN, TEMPERATURE DROP, FLUCTUATIONS OF TEMPERATURE are just some reasons flowers will not open, particularly Gymnocalycium are prone to this,
consistent high heat allows them to really flower well and open wide, but sometimes this just does not happen, especially for an indoor collection of cactus not subjected to higher temperatures from that of a greenhouse etc.
Note: there are some species & varieties of Gymnocalycium that specifically have flowers that only open partially, by nature.

It's amazing how they change, I agree, I love that you can see this change a lot in that type of cactus too, it's nice when they plump up letting us know they are okay, thank you for your great comment and for watching! 😊👍🌵☀️🌵☀️🌵☀️

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL Gymnos and blooms, and thats a FANTASTIC pollination technique for pollinating flowers that dont open fully, a lot of my Gymnos have not fully opened their blooms due to the crazy weather we have had, and some have dropped their buds due to the very high heat last week, roasting hot sunny weather last week to chilly wet grey weather now, BRILLIANT video Claire, thanks so much for sharing, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Sea for a wonderful afternoon and weekend ahead XXXX

Hello Lyn!😁 👋 Thank you for you lovely comment... oh this weather is bizarre lately, I'm not convinced we really have seasons anymore 🤯 that's crazy that even you have had bud drop and flowers unwilling to open too, yes the extreme heat is also a killer, especially in outdoor grow houses... I remember when I used my greenhouse for the first summer it was crazy over 40 degrees Celsius in there, had to ventilate it so much 🥵 Yes we have horrible rain and wind and cooler temperatures too, for days now... ☹ 😆 thank you for watching Lyn 💜🌵🏜😶

Lovely gymnos, the first one when having it's winter rest reminded me of a flat tire so flattened:) Interesting technique -thanks for sharing. Let's hope the weather improves and it will be hot enough for the buds to open.

I really do love the prochazkianum ones...they are resilient cactus, and gorgeous skin colours, yes they do go quite flat... I repotted that one this season because it had burst its giant tap root right out the bottom of the pot in those photos, as it was still in a tiny pot from when I bought it, it was wobbling all the time 😆 It loves its new pot now... I hope the weather improves for the sake of our cactus too! Thanks Magda for watching and commenting 😊🌵👍 🌵☀️🌸🌺🌵🌸🌺☀️🌵

😆😆😆 I didn't like cutting the flowers either... but was last minute choice to try and pollinate, it's a useful technique, I think it was environmental...air temperatures were up and down and rain, and this was before we had a spell of very hot weather, but they all just dropped, even buds that were due to flower, dropping off too, oh well we live and learn thats life, bit I did get to find out the flower colours 🤣 thanks so much Clyde for your great comment, as always, I enjoy reading them, and thank you for watching 😊👍🌵☀️🏜🌵☀️🏜

Oh i love Prochazkianum, one of my favourite. Love seeing them flat them plump up after. I have other gymnos which were brown and shrivelled and now are green and fat haha. Lovely gymno blooms you’ve got there. So pretty. Haha what a coincidence, I have a video coming up soon like yours. Haha. Tried that before and successful. Baldianum and Spegazzinii and they’re both got pregnant. I swapped flowers of the two. On my new video I used Spegazzinii again because their flower doesn’t seem to open fully to see the stigma. Oh how nice to see that Spegazzinii. Very rarely I see their flower fully open. Never seen the stigma of them. I’ve got a few successful speg pollination before but what I do i open the flower more using a tweezer, and using another tweezer with pollens, I’ll insert it inside the flower and wiggle it around the stigma that I can’t see, hoping I was really touching the stigma, but I did because they got pregnant doing that. Hope you’ll get more success with your pollination. Thank you for sharing this technique. You explain it better than me. Hard for me to explain things in english hahaha. It’s really hard when english is not your first language but I’m trying my best hahaha. Wish you’ve made this video way ahead of mine so I can just refer your video for more explanation. Thank you and have a great day 💚🌵

Hello Katherine! 👋Thank you so much for your great comment and for watching... how funny 😆 will definitely look forward to your video (as they say, great minds think alike 😉) Oh fantastic that you pollinated both of those cactus together 🥳 My Mum has a very old mihanovichii cactus with those green yellow colour flower and it is one of those that by nature it just has a partially opening flower, I was hoping some of mine would have this colour flower, but as shown in my video they turned out all pinks and one with white 🤣 but thank you for letting me know about the spegazzinii flower 😬😬😬 I might have to try to pollinate that one then... and LOL at the tweezer technique, I was doing this too on other flowers first, I forgot to film most of what I was doing so I only ended up with my 2 red baldianum flowers to use for the video 🤣 Oh and you execute yourself well in your videos, your English is good, do not put yourself down about that 🤗 it's excellent 😁

Awesome video, Claire. I’ve had a few Gymnos abort their buds this year, still can’t get my mihanovichii rubra to open its flowers, had three buds again this year and it aborted all three. Nice demonstration on how to pollinate the flowers on ones that don’t open fully, really can be tricky getting in there! That’s awesome the variegated one from Edith & myself is about to bloom, it almost looks like it’ll have two different coloured flowers on 😮 Thank you for sharing with us as always. Have a wonderful day from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜

Thank you Daz! 🤩 I feel that the mihanovichii and types like them can be quite fussy and their flower tube s always seem more fragile too at the base... oh no its sad those buds on your rubra aborted and the flowers not opening either 😲😟 so disheartening when they drop off too after so much growth on them and us watching attentively as they grow... my green/yellow moon cactus one (those tiny little babies I gave you came from this one) did the same last year (think I mentioned this before) well, it spent ages growing gorgeous colour of peachy cream buds and all 3 dropped. Katherine mentioned in a comment on my video that the spegazzinii often don't open flowers very wide, even for her they don't open much, so I might have to try and pollinate it somehow, it's flower is still not opening, glad she told me. Oh I hope we all get more buds and flowers before Summer ends, as always Daz, thank you for commenting and for watching! 😊👍🌵☀️🌵☀️🌵☀️🌵

I loooved this video, Claire! So many beautiful Gymnos in bloom. Some varieties are harder to pollinate though but Daz discovered one of his Gymnos is self-fertile. My Gymno calochlorum too, I believe is the same. It developed a seed pod when I had no other Gymno in bloom that time. Very steady hand you got there! 😍 That pollination technique is very popular here and in Thailand. Happy to see the variegated Gymno we sent is doing so very well! Thanks for sharing this awesome video with us. Enjoy your weekend. ❤️🌺🌼🌸🌵💚

Thank you so much Edith for your great comment, thank you for watching too... that's really interesting about those Gymnocalycium you mentioned, sometimes cactus surprise us 😄 I was happy to see so many flowers and the colours as it was their first time flowering this year, and I love the variegated one from you and Daz, its doing well, its still not bloomed but its bulging like a balloon but the weather has been rain and wind and cool air of recent..so will see what happens!😟😆🌵💚🌵

Really interesting pollination technique, I've never seen that before! I should add a gymno to my collection. I had a small one way back but it died.

Thank you so much for your comment and for watching, Gymnocalycium are a beautiful easy care genus too, fascinating watching the buds grow 😄, my baldianum I had a few years ago would open its flowers wide when I kept them upstairs under the sky light window and its the warmest room too... can't use the room anymore though! 😕😊👍🌵🌸🌵🌸🌵🌸

Oh how different it look like after it’s winter rest,it’s plump and fatty 😂 and beautiful blooms too.I tried cross pollination but its a 😞 failure. After I do the pollination and as the flower wilted,it just fell off.Great to know how to pollinate it the other way but I’m too flimsy and I have a shaky hands lol i will just knock out all the flower.

Hello Rhea! Thank you for watching and for your comment 😊👍🌵 Considering I had loads of those flowers on the Mihanovichii ones I thought at least I would get one pollination to be successful, so I am now thinking its just environmental factors to blame and not the pollination process... hopefully! 😆 So sad to hear your pollination didn't work either, better luck for us both next time... I have more buds growing now, I do hope they bloom before the end of Summer so I can try again, and hope you get more flowers too 🤞 Happy growing to you! 😊 🌵🌸🌵🌸🌵🌸🌵🌸

Hello, unfortunately the pollination was unsuccessful on these gymnocalycium shown in this video, as many buds fell off and also buds that aborted before flowering due to weather changes...so I do not have any surplus seeds to send out to anyone. However, I don't know if you have ever watched the channel PURPLE & THORNS on KZread. kzread.info Katherine, on her channel has a huge collection of gymnocalycium Cactus it's amazing, she gets loads of seed pods, check her channel out... but I cannot say for sure and I do not want to make any promises in any way what so ever, but maybe try to contact her, I don't know what her policy is on sending seeds, or even abroad, or whether she will or not, so do not be disheartened if she says no. THANK YOU FOR WATCHING AND FOR YOUR LOVELY COMMENT 👍😊🌵
