Not keen on getting entangled in trouble, I opted to remain in class instead of participating. While others protested, I delved into Langston Hughes' work, preparing for an upcoming exam. An hour later, my professor was furious. She took it upon herself to assign me a failing grade for my absence at the protest. Despite the pressure, I stood my ground. I refused to burn the American flag, firmly believing in upholding its symbolism.

In the words of my father, “I no longer recognize America, hard to believe I served in the Air Force for this.”
