GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, and it’s a number that represents a maximum value of what your vehicle can safely weigh including payload.

Check out our last video to find out if you need a CDL for your truck and your trailer:
• Do I need a #CDL? Find...
--------------------
To give you an example, your truck may have an ’empty’ weight of 5,500 pounds (often called a “curb weight”) and a GVWR of 7,000 pounds. The difference between these two values (1,500 lbs) is the maximum amount of “stuff” you can add to your vehicle safely.
NOTE: It’s important to remember that the difference between your truck’s curb weight and GVWR isn’t a true representation of your vehicle’s payload rating. You have to account for the weight of your cargo and the following items:
--Any passengers you’re going to be carrying
--The weight of the fuel in your truck’s gas or diesel fuel tank
--The weight of any accessories you’ve added to your truck (tonneau covers, toolboxes etc)
If you’re not sure about your truck’s curb weight, you can find out at any weigh station. Just be sure to put all the gear you normally carry in the vehicle to get the most accurate estimate of your truck’s actual weight. Then, there should be a GVWR rating on a sticker on the driver’s side door frame or in your owner’s manual. Some simple math (GVWR minus measured curb weight) will tell you precisely how much cargo you can carry (and/or how much your trailer’s tongue weight can be).

You explained it so clear and concisely. I remember some years back when I was in school for my CDL, the instructors could not communicate it clearly to us no matter how hard they tried. It probably didn't help that they were old men even then, so teaching young people wasn't a strong point for them, especially as we started to learn our road course driving. Such fond memories. .lol. You nailed it in 3:30.

I'm still not understanding this. What I'm getting is that you can only tow 8000lbs with your f450 having a gvwr of 14000lbs. Which means you are overweight towing an empty trailer. My head hurts trying to figure this out. Ford says you should be able to pull over 30 000lbs

You over simplified it. Your gross combined weight is not just adding the two together, every vehicle has a gross combined weight rating that is not just simply adding the two together. The wheel base, 2wd or 4wd, engine/transmission combination, axle ratio all figure into it. A vehicle may have a gvw of 14k, a trailer towing capacity of 30k but can't exceed a gross combined weight of 33k.... So last I knew, 14 + 30 is more than 33

If I have a mid size SUV that says it can pull 5,000 pounds, is it ok if I buy a trailer that weighs 3,000 pounds dry? Or possibly 4,000?

The tongue weight gets added to the truck's GVW; does that mean it get subtracted from trailers GVW? For example if the CAT scale has trailer axle weight of 15,000; do you have to add the tongue weight back to the trailer to get the trailers GVW? I notice that the trailer axles are rated at 9k thus the trailer can only carry 18k with at least 2k on the tongue making it 20k; however, I have a dual axle trailer with 3,800 lbs axle rating and a GVWR of 7,600 (the tongue weight is not added to the trailers GVWR). So, does one use the axle rating or the GVWR rating in the later case? i.e. if the trailer is loaded to 8k (weighted by itself) and when hitched it transfers 800 lbs of tongue weight to the truck leaving only 7,200 lbs on the trailers axles; is the trailer over weight?

What about GAWR? I know it's Gross Axle Weight Rating, but that includes the weight of the car? For example my truck has in the door sticker that my GAWR is 3800 should I then subtract the wight of the truck and cargo and fuel and all that?

Hi, I didn't see the empty weight of the trailer on the sticker. I saw a GAWR, that's not necessarily the empty weight of the trailer, is it?... isn't that just describing how much the axles are rated to carry?

So if the f450 gvwr is 14,000 lbs like you said everything in it and on it , and the trailer rated at 20,000. Should you be towing that trailer since it's past 14,000 lbs or is trucks towing capacity different from 14,000lbs ?

  • @lawnpiranhas

    @lawnpiranhas

    6 ай бұрын

14000lbs is the amount the truck itself can hold. This includes the passengers, fuel, cargo, tools, materials AND the weight applied to the hitch. For example, If the trailer itself weights 20000 lbs including the payload, the tongue or the hitch will have roughly 10% of that trailers weight applied to the hitch. This 10% (which would be around 2000lbs) is what you would add to your vehicles total weight. The amount your truck can carry and tow are two separate things. If you want to calculate your towing capacity, you’d need to know your GCWR as well. Confusing as hell but there are differences in the two.

2016 F350 Crew Cab Long Bed Dual wheel 4X4 3.73 Axle . Published GCVR is 32,100. Publish Max fifth wheel towing Capacity is 23,500. my truck weighs 8786 from door sticker ( GVWR 14000 maximum paylod capacity from sticker 5314). 23500 +8786 = 32,386 which is over the GCVR I would have to take the bumper off and let the truck drive itself not to be violation the published weights if pulling maximum published fifth wheel weight . Can someone explain this to me. the published GCVWR for my truck is much less than the GVWR 14,000 + the Maximum published towing capacity of 23,500 = 37,500 diff of 5400 over the GCVR . Help me understand.

The only places to find you GCWR are; owners manual, Manufacturer website or call the manufacturer and DMV. No where else. This dude talking shit about GCWR. If you pull another trailer you need to have this number. A Ram 3500 with HO cummins is 41,600 max GCWR

Your trucks gvwr is 14000... your max payload is 5314 passengers and cargo combined....your gcvr is 32100 - the 14000 gvwr ...so 18100 would be your max tow rating if your truck was maxed at the 14000 gvwr. So say if you were in your truck with a little cargo and fuel and weighed 10000 then your max tow would be 22100..understand?
