Guy Ritchie banned for 6 months - iMessaging whilst driving LG67FOM

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is licensed by the Evening Standard syndication department. Please contact them for use. I was quite impressed with his polite and calm manner - many drivers get angry when they are discovered using a phone. Please see through to the end of the video for details on why it's generally still dangerous to message whilst stationary in a queue.

Of all the videos, this one showed someone who was respectful, polite, and immediately stopped what he was doing. Comparing it to the people who drive at you, curse at you, aggressively refuse to simply go back when they're blocking the road, it's interesting that this one resulted in significantly more penalties than others committing arguably worse offences.

Yet it's drivers that directly kill five people a day and seriously injure another 70. Plus there's the 30,000 odd folk who die prematurely from air pollution as well as large numbers of pets and wild animals killed by drivers. More people cycling means less of the above problems and safer roads.

@@CyclingMikey I've read comments where people have criticized you for reporting cell phone drivers due to the Guy Ritchie publicity. Those people should be grateful for how many others you've stopped from using their cell phones while driving. Not only have those drivers likely stopped doing it, everyone they tell about their violation will be on notice. Even drivers who watch your videos on KZread from various countries are getting the point, it's very far-reaching. Your action of reporting those drivers is more significant that your criticizers think. It probably wasn't Guy's first time driving using his cell phone while driving but hopefully it'll be his last. Who knows how many accidents you've prevented? People should be thanking you for your efforts!

Well usually as traffic moves up slowly, they'll continue to move slowly, without (usually) checking mirrors, by you pulling off on say that bend in the road in the video and say there's a cyclist/motorcyclist overtaking, you'd force them into the opposite lane with traffic most likely causing the overtaking party an issue or two because you needed to quickly check your phone and wasn't 100% aware of your surroundings. I'm a motorist myself and I've seen that happen easily over 20 times in a week, described exactly like that, pulling off without checks forcing motorcyclists/cyclists to swerve in the opposite lane. If the text/call is that important, pull up and make the call/text otherwise ignore.

Notice how WFN364 (google for videos) drives forwards whilst looking at his phone? This is common behaviour from phone drivers. 2) They are entirely unaware of filtering cyclists and motorcyclists. These drivers are often slow to react when the queue starts moving, and then when someone behind them beeps they drop the phone and hastily move off without even looking. 3) If you imagine these people only use their phones when queuing at the traffic lights, that's terribly naive. The gardener in LM63BTZ was on the phone whilst driving along, and quite likely had been doing it for some considerable part of his journey. These phone users are constantly using their phones, but it's just much easier to catch them when they're in the queue. 4) Phone distraction lasts for a good 10 minutes after you put the phone away. Even if you're only using the phone in each traffic queue at each junction (which is highly unlikely), then you're constantly topping up your mental distraction and are basically as disabled as a drunk driver. 5) Phone driving is worse than drink driving for distraction rates, and that's why it's part of the #Fatal4 behaviours that police target heavily. 6) Mobile phone laws are about to get even more restrictive because of the govt, police, DfT all recognising the danger of phone use. New laws coming in in 2021. 7) People who knowingly break minor driving law will likely also break more serious laws. Strong policing of minor traffic offences has a strong effect on reducing collisions resulting in killed and seriously injured people. It's good to police these phone drivers. Stationary phone drivers are still dangerous for many reasons: 1) Should a child or shorter person cross in front of them they wouldn't even see them, and would likely then move off, running them over. I'm really not interested in this nonsense of "it's not dangerous when stationary, because it clearly is and it's clearly still very appropriate to catch these drivers.

When I’m driving I won’t even pull over to answer a call or text unless it’s an emergency. Phone stays in the pocket after it occurred to me that if I pull over quite safely at, say, 10am to send a text then get into an accident at 10.02am one of the first things the police will do is check my phone. If it’s sat on the seat beside me, or more likely now on the car floor I’ve potentially got a hell of a time proving I was legally parked when I was using it.

Because there is no law saying they have to! And if they are turning away from that route it doesn't make much sense using it in the first place. Better brush up on the HC buddy, it's there for all road users.

@@mattsequoia5483 I'm not your buddy, nor did I suggest or make any claim that they had no right to be there. I'm more than aware that they're entitled to be there. I asked why they would prefer to be there than on the nice protected cycleway because I don't know that address and wasn't sure if there's a joining road where they are prevented in accessing the cycleway due to kerbs. Quite a difference don't you think?

I don't believe for a second that the figures given for total penalty points and fines could be known by the cyclist. Unless he is a police officer himself, I don't see how he could obtain the information. Despite the wrongdoing of the car drivers it IS personal information and if it was handed over by the police, then each individual convicted motorist surely could raise a legal dispute regarding this.

@@CyclingMikey it's just safer all round. That's the important thing. I am patient and a cyclist too but many cyclists just do their own thing. I don't see the logic of being on a tight road like that when there's a cycle lane provided for right next to it.
