Guy Marks 12 14 67

Guy Marks performs his popular routine: "How the West Was Really Won" on December 14, 1967. It has to be seen to be appreciated, as Guy does dead-on visual and vocal impressions of Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, and Robert Mitchum. Plus a musical Indian Chief. This is one of many versions of this routine which Guy tweaked for each appearance.

I agree with Josephine...why am I just seeing this guy for the first time?!! What an awesome impressionist. His Gary Cooper is unreal.

He is a comedian who never rushes a thing. The audience will hang on by the fingertips before each big laugh. And those laughs DO COME.

This guy's impressions aren't only vocal. Before he goes into the brilliant Bogarde dialogue, his setting up of his posture and stance is impeccable. His Cooper and Mitchum stance is equally spot on, especially the feet and walking styles. The attention to detail on Bogarde's face is incredible....the manic eye movement and the subtlest of facial ticks. Coopers idiosyncrasies are also deftly presented......the pursed lips and the wary movement of the eyes. The Mitchum character from the start only needed the inward pointing feet and the swaying torso for immediate effect. This is an allusion to Mitchums alleged fondness for marijuana and booze. Guy Mark's should be more widely known. His attention to detail was superb. He was an exceptional talent, the likes of which we don't see today. Check out his house fly impression and Philly Indian on the Joey Bishop show. The man was a one off. A huge talent lost in the mists of time. I reckon a lot of his work has probably been lost or simply recorded over in the intervening decades, but the few remaining clips are pure gold.

Guy Marks grew up a few doors away from my Dad in South Philadelphia, Guy was one of my Fathers friends, another famous person came from my Dads old Neighborhood, was Jazz Sax player Charlie Ventura, also a neighbor of my Dads. He inspired my Dad to play the Sax, but my father decided to play Trumpet instead, lol. My Father remembered going to the Movies with his friends, Guy was with them to, they went to see the Movie Julius Ceasar, he said they walked home from Town, Guy was reciting the whole movie word for word on their way home. My Dad knew Guy would make it in Hollywood, he did amazing characterizations of actors and personalities. You can see him perform this Indian act on the Joey Bishop Show from the 60's, Guy was on the Show with Joey Bishop.
