I own a 2022 Tesla S Plaid with the OEM 19" wheels/tires. I have gotten interesting 60-130 Dragy test results with a cold battery/motors vs "warmed up" 90% SOC just starting out for the day after a couple min of driving, 60-130 mph is 5.4 sec. 83% SOC warmed up 4.6 sec 60-130 Both runs in Plaid mode. Results have been repeatable on other days as well. The difference can clearly be felt in the SOTP as well, especially top-end acceleration. Same road, day and location for testing. Flat surface and valid. I do live in the north east so it gets pretty cold here and takes longer for the drivetrain to warm up. Have you ever noticed this phenomenon and why it occurs?

Indeed, warmer is better for power output. We talk about that more often in wintertime, as even a Florida 60-degree night is slower than an 85-90 degree day. As for multiple back-to-back-passes, we've often found that our 4th or 5th pass on the 1/8th mile will be our fastest. This is covered in this video where we made a bunch of solo passes while trying to hit a 5.9x for the first time (when full weight and on stock Pirellis) kzread.info/dash/bejne/g2Wd0qyRmLCaaJM.html

Its interesting as for road racing AWD was banned in all the Race Series due to it being a unfair advantage. Hurley Haywood could simply choose his line and not ever hit the apex and still won every race before the Banning. Drag racing the advantage is so obvious, but it does add weight on ICE cars but on a tesla it just adds HP as you add motors for front and rear.

Drag Strip mode warms the battery, and it seems as if something about the higher output at the beginning of the run takes away from the top end. We’ve tried it multiple ways, and for highest trap speed, it’s best to not just go with Plaid. (Maybe in colder weather, like below 50, some warmup would be a benefit for roll racing)

Only stock OEM production parts from Tesla are allowed, but Tesla’s “announced” carbon ceramic brake kit will only fit over the heavy and slower 21” wheels (if they ever deliver this kit). So the Plaid's brake pads will last 450 semi-panic stops from speeds between 120 mph and 153 mph (let's just say an average of roughly 136 mph). Is that good or bad? Hmm, I'm curious as to how many similar panic stops the brake pads of a heavy ICE, like a Hellcat or Demon, would last.

With a bit less weight (front passenger seat, 20 speakers and dashboard) a 5.80 in the 1/8th (0.13 than our best so far) will surely be in the high 8s (just 0.16 than our best so far). But removing that front seat (that has an airbag) would affect safety equipment and make us illegal to NHRA regulations.

Why not try wider tires for the traction (grip) it should help your track times.

  • @TeslaPlaidChannel

👍 We’ve run Nitto tires dozens of times on this Channel, see many of the videos from 2021 and 2022. They also add weight and rolling resistance, causing slower trap speeds and higher ETs (versus the stock 19”s and a perfectly prepped track). This 1/4 mile dragstrip has phenomenal prep. Every night cars are breaking driveshafts and shearing off their lug bolts because of how great the traction is. Wider tires only slow a Plaid down here. (As seen by the guys who can’t break under 9.40, or sometimes even 9.50, in their 21”-wheel Plaids)

That being said, what's the ideal tire for the Plaid to run on any surface? I'd say a 275/45R18 Mickey Thompson drag radial. But the problem is that the brake hardware needs to be modified to fit an 18" wheel. (And they don't make any suitable drag radial for a 19" wheel or larger.). But this *narrower* 275mm tire is all that's needed, as these tires can do 8's all day in the 1/4 mile, even 7's on a prepped track, on a RWD car.
