Over 1900 Tesla Time Slips and counting! Long videos, short videos, we've got 'em both!
We drag race our Tesla Plaid every week, versus the fastest competitors we can find at four local dragstrips.
Your host is a longtime gearhead, who built Camaros back in the ‘80s (and later, a nitrous Foxbody Mustang). That’s why we have such deep appreciation for all cars and respect for their drivers.
Our fastest 1/4 Mile pass (so far) in our Model S Plaid with 19” wheels has been 9.15 at 152.0 MPH. We’ve removed the back seats and a bit more (about 165 pounds), but remain both street legal and NHRA-legal.
We also have a set of Nittos racing tires that we are using at 1/8th mile tracks.
We post EVERY RACE, win or lose. (Unless the competitor specifically requests otherwise, or if the cameras fail.)
Dozens of new exciting races every month! Like and Subscribe for more!

4:45 My first car was a 1971 Mustang Mach 1, Grabber Blue, with 351C 2V, FMX trans. Since then, I've bought 17 new Mustangs (mostly GTs) among other cars. My last Mustang was a 2019 Mustang GT Premium with the Perf Pkg #1. It was an awesome car. I also bought a Tesla Model 3 SR+ in 2019, sight unseen, to be used as a daily driver. I enjoyed the performance and driving experience of the Tesla so much that I sold the Mustang 1 and 1/2 years later and upgraded to a Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor and added the Acceleration Boost option. Faster 0-60 than my 2019 Mustang GT! I bought a 2023 Tesla Model Y LR (built in Austin, TX) last February and added the acceleration boost. I've been a Tesla fan for the last 5 years. I will say that I'm always on the lookout for a restored or very good condition 1971-73 Mustang Mach 1 fastback and would love to see it parked beside my Tesla. Great videos on your channel, too!
Our story involves a lot of Camaros (‘69 RS 327, ‘74 350, ‘78 Z28), but ends similarly to yours! 👍
There is something wrong with that sapphire. On other drag race, Sapphire hits at 8.9 sec in 1/4 mile beating the plaid by a lot.
@@f50koenigg It’s called: “THE CONDITIONS WERE NOT 100% PERFECT”. (Any drag racer can explain this.) The Plaid simply has better traction control and tires for imperfect conditions. But go ahead and believe that every car does the exact same thing every time if that’s what you want. (And don’t watch any real life Dodge Demon videos)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Its interesting to see the sapphire and plaid getting consistent times 8.9- 9.0 secs at 85% batter for the sapphire and 9.3 - 9.2 for the plaid in the dragtines video. The sapphire here is getting 9.4- 9.6 secs. Conditions plays a huge role, but that sapphire may have the worn oem tires, im just speculating, but the performance is way off from the real world.
@@f50koenigg Actually, the Sapphire had only a few hundred miles on it, and we speculated that the tires were “too new” and still has the factory glaze on them. Plus, the air was damp. The same Sapphire did better one month later in our rematch: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWSWy4-tqKrTYJM.html
@@f50koenigg Eventually, that same Lucid hit a better number as the weather warmed up: kzread.info/dash/bejne/goGBtNmeYpTThKQ.html
That nova would dust that ev. He’s not holding it though the gears. You can see it die
@@kennycyrus7731 Pay attention. We’ve beat that Nova many times. Yes, in an EV. He’s got 440ci and unless his nitrous bottle is full and his launch is perfect and his reaction time is awesome, he’s toast 😃
@@kennycyrus7731 How’d that same Nova do here? 🤔 kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaBo2dCBpprMZM4.html
@@TeslaPlaidChannel it’s still no great accomplishment, it’s bought they work on there’s every week. The ev car is set up for 1/4 mile from the factory It’s about what you can build not buy. I could buy one but why would I, there are plenty of combustion engines that would smoke that bought ev. It’s not much of a sport if I can go to the local dealer and buy one. You can do what you want, it’s my opinion. I would be for a ev group of drag racing, they have no place racing against combustion engines. Two different things.
@@kennycyrus7731 Most Plaids lose vs that Nova every time. We win half the time because we took weight out, and we know how to get traction based on thousands of races. And then we still need an outstanding reaction time because Don is very very good. He’s always top 10 in the local bracket standings. He’s almost always 0.02 or better on the Sportsman Tree, using his trans brake button. We’re on a footbrake. And yet we’ve beat him at the tree and to the 660 foot many times 😃. We’ve done 0.00 and 0.01 next to him in heads up races. And despite how much quicker he is to 60-feet, he can’t run past around 800 feet without hitting redline in top gear. He’d blow his engine if he tried to run the full 1/4 mile of 1320’. (BTW we built cars for decades…yet we all get older and when and your back hurts because you are 6’4” from years of leaning into an engine bay, then it’s time for “bought” 👍)
The nova needs more work, it looks like it dies, but I’m still against ev and combustion engine racing, they need a ev class. They are completely different. It’s a reason they have so many classes. That would be like the plaid racing top alcohol dragster, who would win?
That lucid is overpriced..
Engines leaking all over the track after losing! Good races
250k vs 90k and no gap 😮? Waste of money on lucid.
Go home number 1 is Tesla S Plaid better faster than another cars are wanker too shy how beating plaid S😂😂😂😂
They got the coop out there? They want smoke 0:54 😊
765lt all day long running 9.3's on draginfo channel.
Could be close if it gets that run (with traction) and a good RT against our *worst* run. But 3 of 4 would’ve been decisive on this night. Yet some still claim that the Demon 170 “runs 8s all day”, when it actually runs high 9s and low 10s. And then even the Lucid Sapphire lost at this same track 3 out of 4 races. Conditions still matter and the real world has variables 👍
I am curious. How much difference does it make in the Plaid to use or not use launch control, etc…?
Roughly one tenth of a second, depending on the race surface, which is mostly visible in the 60-foot time. The weight transfer provides better grip, which minimizes Traction Control intervention.
Great runs. This weekend, I achieved my best times yet: 9.23 seconds at 151.37 mph, with a 1.492-second 60-foot time and a 6.003-second 1/8-mile time. The car is untouched and on stock 19-inch Pirelli tires. Unfortunately, I got banned from the track for going over 150 mph. ((((
👍 Thanks! Our local track gives us a couple MPH leeway when we need it, although on the night of this video, we didn’t exceed 150 on any of the three 9.2x runs. It’s easy to brake slightly early, as we did unintentionally on that first pass. Still ran 9.22, yet only 147MPH 😃 Good to see Plaids like yours with the 19”s. We cringe at the 21”s at the dragstrip that can’t understand why they are slower. 🤔
They need glue and deep burnouts to match ev performance lol
That just goes to show the importance of all wheel drive. And you must not be a racer track prep is important. Also goes to show that a Tesla isn’t making enough power to spin the tires like some other built all wheel drive cars. So the Tesla won’t benefit from drag radials on a well prepped track.
@@Brian-bv7ih I can set a 9 second on the road with no prep in a tesla. You just stating nonsense to justify glue and burnouts. Tesla has better power management, which allows for consistent and better launches. You know those gas awd snapping axles and blowing trannies.
More pride in building something with your own hands then just purchasing something and taking it to the track.
👍 Yes, as we’ve been there and enjoyed building engines ourselves. Did that for decades starting in 1983. (Let us know how much wrenching you are doing when you are in your 60s with back issues 🤔) Do you also say “built not bought” to every Demon driver, plus the countless stock Hellcats, C8s, Mustangs and Camaros at the dragstrip? We are just thankful they are out there keeping the track in business. The most vocal “built not bought” guys don’t make them feel welcome. Why discourage them and drive them away if they are helping to keep the tracks in business?
how many miles and runs has it done now?
22.5K miles today, around 900 dragstrip passes on the Plaid. (Plus 1001 passes in our 2019 Raven running mid 10s). Still on the Plaids original set of tires from 2021! (Replaced the brake pads once)
A bone stock, full interior Tesla grocery getter...that he drove to the track...beat a Dodge on nitrous. With 55%charge.Turns around and beats a 911 Twin Turbo, that left early.
The side by side against the Nova was fun to watch. You two are so close. At least to the 1/8th. I saw one of those carbon fiber rebodied Challengers at a car show. But it was a whopping $425,000! -No typo!- Still it is a beauty to behold. I figured that it wouldn’t be too fast with those tires, but at least he took it to the track.🎉
@@deanmcmanis4862 $425k!?! Dang! Didn’t realize they are they kind of 💰 💰 💰 But yes, nice to see it at the track instead of an air conditioned warehouse 😃
Wait a minute. That "carbon fiber" goes up the A pillar. Surely the whole roof and rear quarter panels aren't carbon fiber. I'm thinking fake carbon fiber.
👍Interesting observations. Check out the build here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hXuY262RltPgh7g.html
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Kudos to them. It must have cost a fortune. Did the owner actually race it? I see there is another on the ClassicCars TV YT channel "Carbon Fiber Hellcat 1968 Charger from eXoMod"
@@iowa_don Although I only saw the one pass as shown at the very end of this video, track workers told me it made another pass before closing (after I left). A low 7-second 1/8th mile 👍 Someone else said this car was $425k 😳
You are good on the sportsman tree.
Thank you kindly! 😃 (And the foot brake isn’t as “repeatable” as a trans brake button)
@TeslaPlaidChannel yes I agree with you. I race two cars. One transbrake and the other one is footbrake. I grew up using the footbrake so pretty good at like you. I don't know if you remember or not but I towed 16 hours down to Florida and raced the Night of Thunder at Orlando. I entered stock/super stock and sportsman that day. I thought I spoke to you at the track but it's been long time ago. But anyways I was setting on the bye run in both classes cause of the reaction time, guess that's how they pull the bye run if you get it. Long story but didn't make it to 1st round due to rain. I had to beg for my money back cause it was a rain out and they were doing it the following weekend. Which I couldn't make it back down there, but they really didn't want to refund me lol. Had a wheel bearing burn up on the way down on trailer so I sat in my single cab pick up truck for 2 days, waiting for trailer to be fixed. Savanna George nobody works on weekends lol. I rented a car and made it to the semis at same race just different year. If it wasn't you who I met in the Tesla years ago sorry, but he was really nice guy also and ran same times your running. I believe this guy had a SUV electric powered that his wife drove and was parked over by the tower. Oh well sorry for rambling on lol. Keep up the great work with the videos brother 👍
Awesome, I love seeing Don's Nova.
@@Tron-Jockey 👍 I grew up loving that Nova’s body style. Still do! 😃
Another great video, Andrew!! Any thoughts on getting a cyber truck? As a daily??
@@metalted6128 👍Thanks Ted! My wife lost her interest in the CT and I prefer the Model S, so it’s not likely. Maybe a roadster eventually though 😃
What settings do you use when racing? Also, I see you changing them at the end of the track...why?
@@nicknorth1 Dragstrip mode is only for making an immediate pass. Leaving it in that mode after the pass will slowly damage the battery. (Like the KZreadr that recently made a video about his Plaid being slower…while my Plaid still runs 9.1s like last month, and 9.2s in imperfect conditions like this video)
redeye charger is a dud. get your money back

That NOVA runs as consistant as the Plaid. Its a coin toss between the two for the 1/8th. He has the NOVA dialed in well.
👍 For sure! Just goes to show the importance of a good Tree 😃

Most viewers find EV vs EV to be less exciting than racing a loud fire breathing beast. We tend to agree. But every few months we race cars like the Lucid Sapphire and other Plaids 👍

👍 It should be able to run a high 6 in the 1/8th mile, and mid-10 in the 1/4. Not sure what the transmission issue was (driver mod?), but heard they later ran a low 7 at this 1/8th mile track
Is that the speedkore 69 c.f. kit? What a beautiful machine just a bit off in the proportions. Should've gone for the 70 cuda body instead imo. Great runs as usual man! Didn't look like a big crowd at the track, good to see Don there. Any idea how long he has owned the Nova? That car brings back some great memories in the early 70's with my cousin in So Cal. The Plaid is amazing reliable. Another guy I know was talking about going for a ride in a Plaid and graying out when he was full acceleration.
👍 Don told me the story how he’s had that Nova since new in ‘72. He dated his wife in it! Great stories in that car! 😃
@TeslaPlaidChannel wow that's amazing!

@@moki123g None yet. (3 years old now and 22.5Kmiles.) We just ran 9.1s last month! kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6thrs2ih8a6hdI.html
…and still on the original set of tires 🛞
@@TeslaPlaidChannelThat's interesting. Brooks from drag times made a video about his plaid losing performance. Can't remember how old or how many miles on his Plaid though.
…entirely self-inflicted. What’s the absolute worst abuse that I ever seen or heard of? The guy that bought a Plaid, and charged it to 100%, let it sit there stuck at 100% for awhile in Florida Summer heat. Then the next day he locked it in an *enclosed* trailer and towed it across the state while still at 100% during blistering July temperatures. How is the battery management system going to work? Surprise! It’s slower now. What a shock! He obviously totally abused his Plaid battery, but doesn’t seem to make the connection to his own abuse?
Oh come on, Andrew, you know you've been wearing out the wipers. 😂
Yay! Now it's a good Saturday morning despite it being 4:30 am and 94° outside
its amazing how faimily car can outrun drag car that launches on 2 wheels
Plaids are pissing off the hot-rodders all over the world 😂
It looks like they get out of the hole quicker than the Plaid but can’t seem to maintain that speed after the 1/8th.
The Plaid has 1000 hp … It takes a super-stout petrol engine to put out that kinda hp. EV’s vs ICV is very apples-and-oranges. It’s very much like racing a piston aircraft against a turbine aircraft. Point-of-interest: a giant hog-like passenger airliner like the 747 will absolutely smoke even the fastest piston-powered fighter planes …
