    This is 100% improvisation! Guthrie had listened to the track before filming and had a chord sheet down by his feet. We did a couple of takes, but to be honest any of the takes could have easily made it to be the chosen one for the jam track package! Same goes for the other 4 tracks in this Late Night Sessions 3 series!

    Guthrie Govan: "In my teens I did spend a lot of time playing guitar. But I never liked to call it practice. I was never a metronome warrior. The idea of having a regimented thing that you do every day didn’t appeal to me: “I will now do my sweeps for 10 minutes and then I will take a 30-second break, turn the metronome up 20 percent, do sweeps for five minutes, relax, do alternate picking…” Blah, blah, blah. For some people that works. Some people like that Olympic-weightlifter kind of mentality, and that helps them master the instrument. I personally don’t have the patience for that. Or the attention span. So all I ever did was play. Psychologically, for me, there was a big difference between the word play and the word practice. Practice sounds like push-ups or Hail Marys or something. It sounds like something that you’re made to do. But play sounds like fun. I always believed in precision and playing stuff properly, but a big part of that is just trying to make the note sound good. That’s the one thing that people forget sometimes. They get blinded by that quest for speed or whatever. The actual tone of the notes is hugely important. I guess I’ve spent a lot of time subconsciously trying to work on that."

    This is not a song. It is a backing track to play solos over, that I composed and recorded for Guthrie. JTC give it a name because they have to sell the tracks. And the solo is fully improvised. I was there to record it with him, he did a handful of takes and each of them was completely different.

    I often read from people writing that Guthrie's talent is "God given" but if you think about it, that's a well-meaning compliment that overlooks the thousands of hours spent to achieve this level of command over the instrument but yeah having written that, one has to think every once in awhile (Shawn Lane, Jason Becker) God taps a few babies on the shoulder at birth and whispers "play guitar."

    @jantes inferno, if that is the case, then why is there a clear, scientifically proven, correlation between IQ and atheism? That the higher the IQ, the more likely you are to not believe in a god or spirituality? Why is it that science in itself always says that god isn't the cause? And one more thing on the subject. ''All that begins has a cause''. Sure, I can get on board with that. But why do you take a massive leap towards god? Why is that the only possible cause? There are an infinite amount of causes, why is god the one that you pick? Because you believe in it? And how come god ''always existed'', if you clearly believe in the fact that ''everything has a cause''. What caused god to exist? Our laws of physics only exist BECAUSE of the way our universe was shaped due to the big bang. Before and during the big bang, those laws do not apply. Therefor, it's actually illogical to jump to the conclusion that everything has to have a cause. Now it does, but then it didn't have to be.

    That's right! He practiced very seriously, and absolutely loves guitar,, as do all the great players! I have a close friend named Vic, who can play just as well as Govan, and in some ways better,, and when we were both teenagers, he would actually play "8" hours a day! There were so many times when I would ask him to go out somewhere, and he would NOT break his practice for anything! And when he started playing out, everyone was fascinated at his technique, especially his very unique vibrato style! I had a few big name players and groups, such as Floyd Radford, from Johnny Winter & Edgar Winters bands anxious to audition him, Rusty Day, from the group Cactus, wanting him, and later on Deep Purple's lead singer, Ian Gillan wanted to have him work for him in his new band, back in the early 80's. Vic is phenomenal! And at 60 he's just as good as he was at 25! So,, point is,,, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!!!

    Sonny Cannon To play so well like this is necesary a lot of practice and a coup of naturall talent... But the natural sound and style of improvs, can`t win to practice way, is a soul question and you can see that so young, no matter the guitar level. I don`t think is a good direction just go to practice to give ultra-technic level and can play Govans licks perfectly... The real challenge is give the supernatural music style, play any note with your soul and expand that with techs... Govan`s technicall level is`nt so far away for really world experts musicians, but what he do with that tech level is another so much different history.

  • @DeadVoltage1

    @DeadVoltage1

    Sonny Cannon thats a bold statement.. No one can really play better then Govan.. he´s so diverse and complete in every style.. Your friend may be a good shredder, player and have his technique down to a certain level, but to able to whip out such musical ideas in a matter of second and not just the ´´common´´licks is very very rare to see anyone do. thats one reason why Govan stands out, he´s original. Has your friend gotten any video material on where he can showcase his skill? Id reckon hes very famous from where you are from right? Try to look at some of Guthries first work for JTC ie the Lary Carlton and Robben Ford jams.. It doesnt get much better then that.. And I would like to see anyone top that within the next 20 years or so. :D

    i keep coming back to this time and again. this is truely a masterpiece!!!! the timing and length of each bending, the way he keeps the notes continuous and flowing... there is more music in a common musicians play but this is over 90% a melody of emotions than just music!!!

    I know the "that many dislikes" comment is a common place. I know how sometimes, some people may not apprecieate guthrie's playing because he kind of over plays it and he just BLASTS his genius. Those times he still puts in lots of melodic and rythmic variations, but i get along people who don't like it. But here? Man, he only give us bursts of fast playing which fit perfectly with the vibe of the track. Evereything here is utterly melodic and balanced and gets me emotive really... I really don't get how a person can drop a dislike here. My only gess is a hating worker from suhr :D
