I love how Guthrie doesn't try to hog the stage. He knows that these guys on stage with him idolize him, and he still gives them their spotlight. He is such a class act. That is another big reason why he is the best.

I have to correct myself. The two versions can't be fairly compared, because Stevie's version is pure instrumental perfection, while Jimi's version is classic rock song. Though the Jimi's one has some kind of mystic in it, can't really explain it, it's just the way I feel it... I just listened to Stevie's version and I was blown away once again. It's just pure guitar masterpiece by genial virtuoso!

What are you talking about? They were in perfect concert, albeit some conflict in the sonic output, i.e. mixing was a little off. Also what is this presumption that Jeon was trying to "show off"? The whole thing was melody based and very purposeful. And the purpose clearly wasn't "showing off".

Well, at his clinic in Bangalore last year, Lord Guthrie did mention that there are some tunes one must never shred over. He mentioned Little Wing by name, as one of those. However, for the guitar player who's playing with Him here, this guy is sharing the stage with Lord GG, probably the greatest guitar player of the modern era, so to be fair to him, he maybe wanted to showcase his musicianship within the time allocated. So I get his point of view as well.

Let's be fair, that Korean guitarist played a pretty good solo, and it didn't sound like shredding nonsense to me. Guthrie also likes to play fast notes in his solos, nothing wrong with that. Music doesn't have to be a competition. You guys sound like you're circlejerking over Guthrie just for the sake of it. They both played well and showed mutual respect, and that's what music is about.

The Korean guy's tone and playing contrasts Guthrie, yes, because he is not the same person. Regardless, why would having a similar tone make any sense in a live environment? How many gigs have you been to where the combined 2 guitarists and bassist end up sounding like fucking mush, ask yourself that. Notice at 7:00 how well they can independently be heard, without one taking precedence? Huh, I wonder why the fuck that is? And just because they planned the form, texturally, around big dynamic shifts doesn't mean the Korean guy tried to "outshred" Guthrie or play it up, he's obviously got some radical chops, certainly better than everyone here, and his playing is not pentatonic wankery or mindless speedshred either, it's as harmonically diverse as he can make it for a chord structure like this. Contrast, texture, call and response, dynamics, look them up, educate yourselves, and for fuck sake, stop thinking like guitarists (and children) and start thinking like musicians.

Use names, not “Asian guy”. I can see how people think than Jeon In Hyuk was playing out too much, but that’s exactly what Hendrix did. Guthrie set the perfect contrast for someone to let loose. He knew it. Hendrix let loose himself and people followed. You can argue but Jimi literally played a guitar behind his head, and then with his teeth. and then lit it on fire. Proving you can give birth to sound before killing it and still make it beautiful.

haha that was definitely the first clip i have seen of GG smoking weed... I thought the other guy was quite a good player and I loved how GG started to bring out some improv with him towards the end
