In 1937, the Nazis held an exhibition of 650 modern artworks that they had stolen from museums and private collectors. It was part of the Nazi’s culture wars, designed to inflame the public and it was called “The Degenerate Art Exhibition.”
Artists considered degenerate by the Nazis included Paul Klee, Otto Dix, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Piet Mondrian, and Egon Schiele.
But surprisingly one artist was missing… Gustav Klimt, who at one time or another had been described as morally questionable, obscene or even pornographic, and was friends with Jewish patrons, intellectuals and artists. So why did the Nazis leave him out of their modern art purge?

I live in PA and have been to Vienna 15 times to visit works by Klimt, plus his grave, his last studio, and a castle in Romania where he painted huge realistic full-length portraits going down a grand staircase early in his career. His muse was Emilie Fluge, a couture fashion designer, and I always visit her atelier, and sometimes attersee, the lake in central Austria where Klimt spent summers with Emilie, relaxing, boating, ang painting trees and water. I enjoyed your video and downloaded it. You’ve given me a new angle to study.

@@GreatArtExplained I was also about to ask this, as if guessing the answer in my mind... What sinister times we are going through! How is it possible to censor an excellent Art History class like this, the best approach to Klimt I've ever seen, when they allow swarms of disinformation channels to proliferate and promote alienating content from mediocre influencers?

Vienna is indeed very heavily centered around Mozart, Klimt, and Schiele, as well as the famous Staatsoper. It's refreshing. The buskers sing opera and play classical music. The opera is the main social activity. Art is also at the heart of the city, especially Klimt.

The nazi's degenerate art show is one of my favorite stories from art history since it has so much relevance to today. Thank you so much for an excellent presentation. (I'm sorry the original version was censored by KZread, proving that we haven't come as far in the understanding of art as we might wish.)

Admittedly, I've never been very interested in art however, watching these videos has given rise to a curiosity in me to learn more and to seek out museums and galleries when I can. Thank you for the work you do.

Gorgeous colors in Klimt's works, such beautifully flowing lines! It's tragic that so many pieces were lost in Vienna and much of Europe during WWII, such a treasure trove of pieces we'll never get back. Thank you for the video, James, beautifully eloquent as always, and pointgnant in a world where we see missinformation and appropriation as a means to garnering support for violent ignorance and totalitarian tendencies.

These videos are works of art. In the US, we do not do enough art education outside of university. There is an underappreciation for art in our culture and education like this is sorely needed, especially when it is contextualized with retrograde gov'ts and history.

Bravo James and Joanne! I first saw Klint back in the 1980s at the MOMA in NYC. Despite being completely ignorant in Art terms I was immediately caught by the Sessecion Movement.

Hi James, I really enjoy your videos and even as an art historian myself, I still find fascinating the way you link the art and artist to their socio historical contects. I have a question related to your previous job. Can you share details of the company that employed you as a student city travel guide in Europe please? Many thanks

I usually don't comment on videos, but it seems to help creators, no matter what the comment is. So to try and boost this re-upload, here's a rewatch, comment and a thumbs up.
