In this episode we look at three less well known works by Michelangelo, including a Pieta he made for his own tomb, a controversial naked Jesus Christ created when he was just a teenager, and a Bacchus rejected by the man who commissioned it for being too raunchy. All three are in Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, and a city which houses one third of the world's most important works of art.
Michelangelo went to study in Florence at the age of 13, so he is inextricably linked to the city. Perhaps no more so than with his statue of David - the very embodiment of Florence and everything it stood for.
He wasn’t the only genius in town. Even before he was born, Dante Alighieri had written his Divine Comedy and established the Italian language, Filippo Brunelleschi had completed his impossible dome for the Cathedral and kick started the Renaissance, and Lorenzo Ghiberti gave us the gates of paradise. No other place can rival Florence for the sheer quantity of master works, many of them still in the exact same sites for which they were created.

@@GreatArtExplained my goodness, thanks for being super active. Commendable work.
These videos are as good, if not better, than an art history college class because it makes these important works interesting to learn about and makes a form that was seen as 'out of reach' more accessible to common folk like me, that's what an educational medium should do. Thank you James for all your hard work.

It astonishes me every time I look back at the length of these videos and realize they're only about 15 minutes each, this felt like an hour-long deep dive into michelangelo. The depth of knowledge brought forth in only a quarter of an hour is astonishing.
I am an international student in Florence. With this video, I can see how much I have been able to learn after seeing these very sculptures in person. This channel has been absolutely amazing to me and has inspired me to study in such a wonderful city.

I’ve just got back from Florence and fell in love again with the city. Your videos are fantastic, well produced, filled to the brim with content, and really enjoyable to watch! If you’re new here, do take the time to watch the old ones as well.
Thank you for creating these videos, this is the type of content that makes me glad to have the internet.
"... we can only hope that in his last days the church gave him the kind of spiritual support that he gave to Christ in the guise of Nicodemus" Wow! The writing done for the narration in this one was fantastic! Just curious if you'd ever consider doing a video on Affandi.

@@GreatArtExplained I'm honestly not too surprised since I had only learned about his work while living in Indonesia. If it's any jumping off point, I think the work he created in his later years when he began squeezing the tube onto the canvas and using his hands is his best period. His family runs a museum dedicated to his work if you're ever in Yogyakarta.
I've been watching these videos since the beginning of the channel and it's really so fulfilling being able to see it getting better and better each day, and with so many people following the channel and watching the videos.

So glad to see this now as I'm on a Florentine renaissance art kick. My niece's university term in Europe just visited Florence for art studies prompting me to reexamine the period. Your videos add another dimension to what comes from many books. Looking forward to testing, discussing the period with her and making certain she knows what she was privilege to see.
Great job. I've recently returned from Rome and Florence, and it was a pleasure to see these pieces again.

Florence is such a perfect package. The architecture, the art and the beautiful Tuscany countryside all easily accessible by walking and biking. Not to mention the food and wine. It's heaven!
1:19 many years ago I watched a documentary on the construction of this Brunelleschi dome and it was absolutely fascinating and brilliant. Since then I've viewed it as one of the greatest architectural works of the Renaissance era, the techniques used to build it in that particular shape are unlike anything I had heard of and I highly recommend looking into it for anyone interested *edit: I believe I found the documentary I saw and it's on youtube, the title is Great Cathedral Mystery: PBS Nova Documentary

Genius. I will never tire of Michaelangelo.
Thank you for the vídeo. I have lived in Florence myself and watching this I remembered a lot about my time there. Such an impressive and important little city. And as for Michael Angelo, a true genius.
Firenze is my favorite city in all of Europe. I was there in 1974. The Galleria Academica was closed to the public. The David was being cleaned and restored to its original glory to celebrate the 500th anniversary of its creation. I'm going back in the not so distant future.
Michaelangelo is one of my favourite artist. I have seen all of his master pieces in Florence. I am so delighted and grateful for you to curate this particular piece on him. Thank you!
How coincidental! I just went to Florence and the exact museum last week 😁
Thank you so much from S.Petersbourg, Russia...... Your videos are so precious and I cannot thank you enough for everything.

Great Art Explained: GREAT, STUNNING & simply FANTASTIC!
Thank you for creating this video. I saw the nude crucified Christ when I was in Firenze in 1999 or 2003, I can't recall anymore. It was shown at a special exhibition of the early Michelangelos' works and it has left been forever etched into my mind since I saw it. Really a beautiful work of sacred art. I hope to see it again whenever I get a chance to visit Firenze.
My wife and I visited Italy recently and Florence it was by far our favorite place, amazing to see these famous works of art in person after seeing them so much over the years
I really love your videos, and this one is no different. You can really see how much work you put into these. I actually took a lecture on the Bacchus last semester. The ideas that Riario rejected the Bacchus or that Michelangelo intentionally wanted to sell the Cupid as an antique are a bit of a myth unfortunately. Sources suggest that Michelangelo actually tried to buy the Cupid back and make it known that it was a work by him. The idea that Riario rejected the Bacchus stems from the biography by Condivi. Michelangelo worked with Condivi on the text and aimed to conceal his involvement with Riario after he fell out of favour.
Just come back from Rome and in a big Michelangelo phase as a result so this video is perfect timing, thanks for this! Really appreciating his later non-finito sculpture
I get so excited everytime a new video is uploaded. I can see the passion in the script and the production. Thank you guys so much for the wonderful work!
What a beautiful contribution, James, to art and to us! Thank you so much.
These videos are great works of art themselves. THANK YOU

I agree with the previous message. The passion for only tell the relevant, the pivotal, the contextual, taking along the listener to reveal the concusion that proves both, intellectually and sensitively, the genious of the artist. Impressive.
Thank you 👍 crisp and eloquently put. Michelangelo ws without a doubt one of te most inspirational artists 🎨 of Renaissance Era...

Excellent episode as usual. I especially love the portion where Michaelangelo’s break was when he scammed a cardinal through an antique he made. And it’s so fascinating that the cardinal rejected the Bacchus sculpture and I wondered if he’s kicking himself in the grave now that Michelangelo is a grand master.
Some good ideas for future projects would be, The School of Athens by Raphael, and The Coronation of Napoleon by David. Both have a lot of detail in them, a lot going on...
You have inspired me to redo my European trip. I want to go back and revisit these masterpieces, but from the perspective of my new knowledge. Thank you!

I loved this very much, Thank-you again for the amazing and very well documented video! Looking forward to your next ones!!!
A new video?! Heck yeah ❣️🙌🏾
Most young adults in their 20's are making TikToks and playing Pokemon, this guy was making masterpieces that mimic subtle movements in solid stone that would last for hundreds of years as masterworks for the centuries. Our generation has nothing on Michelangelo.
thiskind of quality content should be financed by bbc, and aired on tv

Your analysis of these works is breathtaking and includes so many meaningful aspects that actually allow us interaction with the works and their creators.
