The Planets, Op. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst.

    AMP - MUSIC CHANNEL, First of all "The Planets" was based on astrollogy, so the earth wouldn't be in it. Pluto was added to make the joke.

    @@jackminto7062 it’s says bass flute but it’s really an Alto Flute. A bass flute is in C. An alto flute is in G. in saturn it says “Bass Flute in G”. this means it is an alto flute

    As band/orchestra kid, I used to prefer Mars and Jupiter But now I've come to appreciate the other movements, especially Venus, Mercury and Uranus Venus' dreamlike cadence with the wood winds and harp is the perfect pillow to land on after the harsh, relentless and foreboding Mars

    Mars is my favorite because of how dynamic is and the 5:2 part is amazing. Venus and Mercury are amazing as well with their light feeling and how they convey their planets/gods so much better.

    I always found Mars very monotonous, simplicist, and unsophisticated but I still like the Planets as a whole. Also, Jupiter is quite repetitive and coulourless. Very predictable and without many effects

    Is this all in concert pitch? All the keys are the same even though there’s horns in F, which would be a different key unless it’s all concert

    No, it's all transposed. The first movement Mars has an open key signature (essentially, it has no key signature at all). If you look at Venus, you can see that there's 3 flats in most parts. However the clarinets are in B-flat and are written transposed to 1 flat (also, English horn in F written with 2 flats). Horns, trumpets, and timpani in orchestral music are generally written without key signtures.

    No, but most movements have an open key signature, as Carlos already pointed out. You can see the difference in Jupiter (18:46), which is in C major, and the transposing instruments such as the clarinet have a key signature. On the other hand, the next movement has an open key signature again in all parts (26:21).

The US copyright term for works published between January 1, 1924, and December 31, 1977, is 95 years from the date of publication, but not all works published between 1924 and 1978 got the full 95-year term. If the copyright expired under the 1909 Act and was not renewed then it became public domain.

    1.27 doesn't resemble the Imperial March at all. As for the main title and the blockade runner it sounds very similar but it's written rather differently in the score while it still clearly is an imitation there

    Tell that to Holst, he invented the work so I think he's the one to decide the order of his movements (who apparently ins't a random order) , and of course (and i hope that you know that) there are no planets such as the Earth or Pluto written by Holst, if they do exist they're written by different composers to "complete" or "improve" Holst's symphonic poem but seing how popular they are I don't think it's a real success and think we can stick to what Holst has written.

    The Planets isn't really based off of astronomy. The suite is based off of the Planets apparent astrological and mythological connections. Earth isn't really used in astrology other than as a point of reference, and Pluto hadn't even been discovered yet at the time when it was written.
