Beautifully played by the musicians of the NDR Radiophilharmonie under Maestro Andrew Manze. Bravi Tutti!
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus are my favourite pieces here. Esp Jupiter, the middle section that builds up. Love the dramatic timpani sections in Uranus with one player rapidly transitioning over all 4 drums.
I love the fact that you can hear the tam-tam so clearly in the first parts of Mars!
I liked this video the second I started it, and on numerous occasions throughout the performance, I wished I could like it again, and again, and again. Bravissimo!

You talk of balance and the first time the ostinato in Mars reaches forte, the brass loses against strings and timpani. That's not exactly balance.

@@Quotenwagnerianerif you're referring to 1:21, then Id have to disagree with you by saying that I CAN hear every instrument played at that moment. But even if it wasn't, there are SO many other moments where certain passages are not so clear all the time-which Manze was able to bring out. Some examples: 8:10-the clarity of the harp articulations in relation to the sustained notes 9:25-every solo string phrase in relation to the winds 18:01-the interjections made by the winds were subtle yet clear EVERY time 30:08- being able to hear clarinets WITH horns to create that color 33:30-the balance between the harp harmonics with strings! It's SO difficult to get that many strings to play so softly with control 39:13-A French Horn phrase that's often played louder than usual because the three voice spread. Its the first I felt it to be a nice mezzo forte.

I've had the pleasure of seeing the Toronto Symphony Orchestra perform The Planets four times (most recently a couple weeks ago). Unequivocally, The Planets (and more specifically, Jupiter), is my favourite piece of music of all time. There's a certain sparkle that comes from listening to this being performed. Not to mention that this is a very well done recording of the suite. Manze did a phenomenal job at capturing the essence of seriousness, but also, playfulness of the suite. Brava!!

What a refreshing, brilliant performance! Musicians, conductor and sound engineers are to be congratulated for this stunning performance of The Planets. If I had a tiny wish it is for the brass to be more present during Jupiters big tune. Still, it’s a brilliant brilliant performance. I hope it becomes available on CD!!!

I am really impressed by Manze. Like Harnoncourt, he started as an original instruments specialist, which, to a certain extent, has its valid reasoning. But finally I always think a good performance outweighs the amount of research to recreate a work's contemporary performance practices.

The euphonium is so infrequently used in symphony orchestras that the player deserves more then his share of camera shots. The only reason they let me into community orchestras is that I play cello as well as baritone (but I've only ever performed "The Planets" on cello .🙁).
