I have always felt that both Guru and N'Dea are two of the most UNDERATED artists in their genres. Brand New Heavies should have blown up much bigger than they did. And Guru is still in my top 5 hip-hop artists of all time, right next to Pete Rock, The Tribe and Nas.

BNH was up there with Incognito, Jamiroquai, Corduroy and James Taylor Quartet in the early to mid 90's, when we think on the jazz-funk/retro side of acid jazz. The thing was that, to be honest, BNH was mostly at their peak with N'Dea. BNH originally was the three other guys, and N'Dea came along with time. Their two albums with her were amazing, but otherwise they didn't go much further in terms of success and media. Most acid jazz bands had some hits over the years, but mostly only Jamiroquai had the big label behind them. Incognito, IMO comes in second in terms of fame, but first place in terms of consistency over the decades. Other have been quite consistent too, in their respective niches, some of them to this day.

When a real singer and a real rapper come together, magic happens. She is not just technically gifted but she has her own tone, a depth and a sweetness; Guru’s voice is truly one of the most memorable in hip hop, that slight rasp; the way he rides a beat is just so immaculate. So clean, so precise.

I was 15 when this was out-Summer 93. White guy who loved hip hop and rnb My life at time was basically girls, friends and sports. That summer my family had a beach house in NJ shore and my two best friends stayed with us. My friends went to beach early and as I was getting ready to go,I was watching MTV Jams and this came on for the first time. I had already loved Gangstarr from years before and this was incredible. It was a different direction for him besides a few Gangstarr joints (Love sick). Anyway, when I got to the beach, I told my friends that I had just saw a new dope video from Guru solo album. One of those friends has been long gone-he passed in 2000 from drug overdose. It’s songs like these that remind me how great hip hop was back then but also the memories that are often tied to them. Rip Guru-you will always be hip hop royalty. And RIP to my once best friend Jay Wheels

This joint knocks. Jazzmatazz Vol. 1 is one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. Guru's project of hip hop and jazz fusion was a resounding success. N'Dea has such a sweet melodic voice I can't understand how she didn't blow up like nitro.

I've just watched a repeat of Top of the Pops from 9/9/93 in which the "Breakers" featured ~10 secs of the chorus of this vid. Earlier in the show they had graphics for numbers 40 down to 11 over the video for DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince - Boom! Shake The Room and I exclaimed "Ooh, Guru!" when I spotted it as a New Entry...to then not have any Guru in the brief clip they played! I bet we don't get to hear it in full in the following episodes either. N’Dea Davenport's name wouldn't've meant anything to me at the time either as The Brand New Heavies' big hits with her, off their third album, Brother Sister, Dream On Dreamer & Midnight at the Oasis weren't until the following year. Thanks to Wiki, I'm now aware that their previous album (pre-N'Dea*), Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1, from 1992 is littered with quality hip-hop collabs, including Gang Starr on It's Gettin' Hectic and really ought to be on my list. I was only fourteen when that 9/9/93 show was originally aired and though I was heavily into hip-hop then, Guru & Gang Starr didn't find their way to me until Moment of Truth, but when the major music programme of those proto-internet days was skipping gold so blithely, it's easy to see how. EDIT: *One Wiki page (or it might've been a Twitter comment) had me thinking she wasn't involved for their first two albums and though their debut in 1990 had Jay Ella Ruth on vocals for three tracks, the US release in 91 had N'Dea on five and the international rerelease in 92 had her on seven (replacing Jay on all her tracks on both releases).

[Guru] Baby why don'tcha, honey why won'tcha Accept the fact that it's not just the knack That I care, so please let me share Special moments, moments so rare Check it out, if I could give you the world, you know I'd do it Everything at your feet - ain't nothin to it But it's hard sweetheart, and it's rough out here But I doubt there, is anybody else for me [N'Dea] Trust me, I love you Trust me, I need you Trust me, I want you Trust me.. Trust me, I love you Trust me, I need you Trust me, I want you Trust me.. [Guru] Mmm the things I feel, they are for real I'm past the point of dwellin, on the sex appeal Mad chicks sweat me, but I desire your womanness Dude sweats you, but I'm the best Listen, we could build a future together No doll and I would never soup you ever, never I'm buggin out, over the thought of you leavin Tried to step to you, but now you're retreatin [N'Dea] Trust me, I love you Trust me, I need you Trust me, I want you Trust me.. Trust me, I love you Trust me, I need you Trust me, I want you Trust me.. I do believe you do care To tell you the truth, I am scared Some freaky people out there You know? Trust me, I love you Trust me, I need you Trust me, I want you Trust me.. [Guru] I sent you flowers and, I sat for hours and Contemplated, the state of our affairs and I find there Is no way out I'm in a love lock The funny thing about it I don't wanna even stop, so [N'Dea] Trust me, I love you Trust me, I need you Trust me, I want you Trust me.. Trust me, I love you Trust me, I need you Trust me, I want you Trust me.. [Guru] So now you know the flavor It's not about the stuff I gave ya And my behavior is based on strong Feelings I have, of you and me, it's like a bond A treasure, not to be corny but word I wanna give you all the joy that you deserve I know we argue, sometimes I start to annoy you But we should never ever, try to destroy two Hearts joined, intertwined with a passion Give me a chance love, that's all I'm askin And furthermore, you can be sure that I'll do Every little thing you need, yes it's true I'm not desperate, but I'm the one for you [N'Dea] Trust me, I love you Trust me, I need you Trust me, I want you Trust me.. Trust me, I love you Trust me, I need you Trust me, I want you Trust me.. Love is so risky y'know I want you to do and show Me all of you openly Honestly.. I wanna trust you baby (trust me, I love you) I wanna trust you baby (trust me, I need you) I wanna trust you baby (trust me, I want you) I wanna trust you baby (trust me) I wanna trust you baby (trust me, I love you) I wanna trust you baby (trust me, I need you) I wanna trust you baby (trust me, I want you) I wanna trust you baby (trust me) I wanna trust you baby (trust me, I love you) I wanna trust you baby (trust me, I need you) I wanna trust you baby (trust me, I want you) Wanna trust you babe (trust me) I wanna trust you baby I wanna trust you baby I wanna trust you baby..

Tooooooo many dope amazing music groups on the shelves of record stores in the 1990s! Many times I had no idea what to buy with the little money I had so i left empty handed to think it over in the mall food court! LOL!
