    I don't know why people have problems with those who pronounce the Khukuri wrong. A lot of us Nepalis pronounce English words wrong. It comes down to the accent, English involves a lot of tongue curling, it's difficult to pronounce it properly for them, what's the fuss about? What matters is they respect our military and our history.

    You heard a story about the Gurkas but completely flubbed the retelling of it, the story goes that they were asking for volunteers for a dangerous drop mission behind enemy lines and half the group immediately volunteered, the other half said they'd also volunteer if they could have parachutes. The point of the story is that they're incredibly brave and were willing to anything commanded not that they were actually dropped out a plane without parachutes. People don't survive that.

    Gurkhas (Gorkhali) were famous for their stealth as well alongside their couragoues battle charges. Gurkas would sneak at enemy camps / trenches at night, slit the throat of a sleeping enemy, then they would tie the shoelaces of the one sleeping beside the victim. The surviving enemy would wake up the next day, witness the slit throat of their companion in horror, and would tip and fall over when trying to run. (Most of the time in trenches and camps soldiers were always battle ready and slept with boots on.)

    That's a great review man. I was fortunate enough to serve alongside a Gurkha regiment in 1993. Trust me they are animals in battle but the most gentle, polite, respectful and often funny human beings on Earth, in all other situations. A recent political campaign here in the UK has secured the future of many serving and ex-service Gurkha personnel by granting them UK citizenship, a very emotion stirring movement that the Government could NOT be allowed to win, thank God. God bless the Gurkhas.

    I remember my Grandfather talking about the Gurkha's from WW11. He was in the Canadian Army in WW11. I had the honor of seeing a Gurkha unit on duty in Hong Kong back in '92 before Hong Kong was turned over to the Chinese Commies. They have such a great history. What a great knife.

    After WW2, Japanese officers in Indonesia were allowed to retain their sidearms for protection against reprisals. My dad and his friends were standing around when a patrol of Ghurkhas came through their village. They met a drunk Japanese officer who attempted to draw his pistol. Before anyone else could react, a Ghurkha Bren gunner, drew his khukuri, lopped off an ear, reversed the direction of his cut, and casually laid the blade over his juggler, smiling the whole time. My dad never forgot.

    Namaste! Glad to see you have gotten yourself a khuk Sootch. I've picked up some myself over the years and just love the things. Quick safety tip for you. When you draw the blade from the scabbard, don't wrap your fingers around the edge side of it. The blade has been known to split the scabbard there and then proceed into the drawers fingers, causing some nasty wounds. Grip around the spine and the sides instead. (Many thanks to Uncle Bill for that one. Gone but not forgotten.)

    I highly recommend you get some polishing compound and a buffing wheel, or even progressively finer grits of wet sand paper with oil, and put a high polish on your 3 chirra. I've done the same to my own and it really makes those fullers "pop" with a mirror polish. not to mention is great for resisting rust compared to the semi-polish

    The British Ghurkha is one of the finest Infantrymen in the world,the Indians and the Sultan of Brunei has a battalion of British Ghurkhas too.The story about Ghurkhas parachuting without parachutes goes back to the story in WW2 India.The British just formed a Parachute Infantry unit of Ghurkhas and Indians.The Ghurkhas who volunteered were told that they would jump from 800 feet.Then some of them said whay cant they jump from 300 to 200 feet?The British officer said parachutes will not work at that height.The Ghurkhas heard that they were using parachutes and were delighted and one of them said"So Saib.We will be using parachutes then everything will be fine.".I have the Mk2 from Khukri House and this is a fine blade.

    Just an FYI, that destruction video that Noss did was on a Himalayan Import Kukri and the one you have is a Khukuri House model. They are not the same company and are actually competitors. With that being said, there probably isn't a large difference in the steel and treatments used on them and each would likely perform similarly in a destructo test.

    @kingmanted That actually comes from an old story that they were going to fly in low and jump out with the British. After some discussion the Gurkha's agreed, but requested to be dropped over soft ground. When explained that parachuting over soft ground is not a good idea, The Gurkha's asked, "what is parachuting".

    Love your well made video. You are a good speaker. The big knife you're using is a heavy export model for foreigners. Gurkha's/Nepalis do not use that one. Gurkha's today use the BSI No.1 and No.2. Which is usually around 1 lbs in weight and 11 inches long. The Dui Chirra Kukris that were used by Gurkha/Indians have average specs of: blade- 32cm long (12.5 inches) and weigh 575 grams (20.3oz). There are different version of this beautiful big knife but you get the idea. Look up: Dui Chirra Kukri

    I have the WWII model that I got directly from the owner of Khukuri House while doing Mission Work in Nepal (he was a childhood friend of my guide and was a Gurkha Warrant Officer himself). There's TONS of imitations out there, guys: Ex-Gurkha Khukuri House, Khukuri House Online, Patan Khukuri House because of a lack of copyright laws in Nepal. Do yourself a favor and get it from the real deal. The Khukuri House has some of the best service and nicest men and women in the business. If you find yourself at the shop in Lalitpur, you're going to get it cheap and you will be incredibly pleased at the quality.

    @warriorofsteel01 I got a khukurihouse operation enduring freedom model and it came with a terrible convex grind by the edge, and the edge chips a pretty easily... I don't know if this is common with kukhurihouse, but they do make some solid knives and a little grinding as you suggest is probably all thats needed for a top notch piece.

  • @frankgon4
    @frankgon413 жыл бұрын

    @FrogMast3r Okay, to answer your question: Stainless Steel is good up to about 12 inches overall length. Once the overall length starts going past 12 inches, the more chance of the blade breaking during heavy hacking,. Stainless steel is hard / brittle by nature. You don't see stainless steel hammers or axes at home depot. Carbon steel is better for impact. For smaller knives, stainless steel is fine.

    The low-flying plane anecdote, as I heard it told, goes something like this: Calling for volunteers to jump over enemy territory, only half of the Gurkha unit stepped forward. When the British CO asked the Gurkha officer why some of the men were reluctant, he replied that more would volunteer if they could have parachutes. True story, too. If you'd like to help support a destitute Gurkha veteran or widow, google "Gurkha Welfare Trust" and see what you can do. (This is not spam... I just care)

Children have access to the internet and how we adults behave influences them. Side point or actually the topic of this video: Check out Tora Blades in London for near replicas of Kukris that Nepalis actually use in Nepal.
