Gurdjieff’s ‘Stop’ Exercise: The Secret Teachings

“You can never awaken using the same system that put you to sleep in the first place.”

This evening’s topic - “Gurdjieff’s ‘Stop’ Exercise: The Secret Teachings”
Sometime in the early 1900s, Mr. Gurdjieff introduced an exercise to the public in his “dance” performances called the “’Stop’ Exercise”. During the performance the dance master would call out “STOP!”, at which point the dancers would freeze in whatever position they found themselves and then remain exactly that way, unmoving, until the release command was given.
Various Fourth-Way groups have used variations of this exercise over the years to greater or lesser effect.
J. G. Bennett states in his book “Gurdjieff: Making a New World” that Gurdjieff most likely learned the exercise during his stay at a Yesevi tekke (that is, a Sufi house) where he spent two years in training.
Why might we be interested in this exercise? Where did it come from? What is it intended to do?
Let’s discuss these questions and furthermore look into the inner meaning of the “Stop” Exercise this evening.
An Example of the Stop exercise.

The Arabic word for stop 'Wuqoof" carries a very strong energy about it. This talk was an excellent reminder and warning at the same time. it reminds us to stop our mechanical set behaviour and in so doing free ourselves, even for a moment, from an unconscious state that by its very nature prevents us from being present in reality. It also warns us to be very careful of anyone who uses this practice and starts talking within that pause. Thank you for both, the reminder and the warning.

The story about the kid who wants to learn to fight reminds me of Peter Sellers who gets suprised by Kato in his movie Inspecter Clousea. Always a suprise, one has to be on guard constantly not to fall a sleep.

[Mushtaq] I think that would be a great way to test out the practice.
