"I went numb when I learned to see" That is what happened to me when I learned. "It feeds the rich while it buries the poor" and " You can't trust freedom when it's not in your hands". Again, very powerful lyrics if you are tuned in to what is happening today. It is truly sad. I know this is a reaction video and that you may not be paying attention to the lyrics but IMO, the lyrics are very important, especially today.

I loved GnR as a teenager and they will always remain in my top 10. I've seen them live twice during their use your illusion tour and both times they were only a few minutes late and played almost 3 hours. But I know that Axl could be quite the diva. Greetings from Germany

Hi Dave, loved your reaction and analysis as always! But I too think you slightly missed the point. It IS about history repeating itself. Every verse and chorus and solo builds up the tension and frustration in the singer (a person observing what's going on around them), as the years go on and the same s**t keeps happening. The build up is in the lyrics. And in how the instruments are added. Yes, the piano was there since the second verse. I fully believe the repetition is intentional, until it explodes in the end as the singer/observer has had enough. Not the best song for a first listening, but a great piece to listen again with the lyrics. There is a lot happening both lyrically and structurally.

Axel had issues that pissed off dans and ended up breaking up the band, but of the flip side let’s be hone for a minute, this is also what made him one of the truly great rock/metal front men of all time. He was a rockstar and when he was on his game not many can match his abilities to put on a ridiculously awesome concert. Plus he was a major factor in the great songs we have from GNR. To get the good you except the bad in this case and it was worth it without a doubt. 🤙🏻

I understand that is a bit repetitious, but i think the song strong point is on the lyrics, and maybe it got a verse too many but at the same time the lyric were constantly changing. So instrumental a bit repetitious, lyrics not that much, and i really think it’a where the song shines. It was a song to deliver a message i guess. Hopefully more Guns N’ Roses next! 🤘🤘🤘

I had appetite and loved every second then moved abroad at 16 years old and got the 2 uyi albums and they were played non stop for a year..... You really do need to listen to them, so many amazing tracks, slash made the holy grail of guitar work over these 2 albums, looking back as an adult are they overblown? Yeah... But that's part of the appeal from that time, songs like locomotive, Don't damn me, garden and garden of Eden, plus estranged and don't cry etc there's so much good stuff here and I hope to see a lot of reactions from these 2 albums, even spaghetti incident I think you'll like some of the covers on there ....

It's been awhile since I was hyped for GnR. I wasn't especially impressed with the Use Your Illusion albums when they came out but there are exceptions. And I get how you didn't hear this, it was released basically as a b side to You Could Be Mine and sorta got picked up by classic rock stations and picked up momentum. It's actually a strong song. Love the fact they sampled that classic Cool Hand Luke scene too. One of the things I liked most about it though was the fact that it sounded different without being too different like a lot of those songs on the albums that I didn't dig. A lot of the songs were slow and really highly strung without a payoff. Maybe a lack of collaboration in songwriting? That was definitely a problem on Spaghetti Incident. Here they just managed to put it all together. Shame the band collapsed under the weight of ego and substance abuse. The song probably could have been shorter and more dynamic but brilliant songwriting isn't easy when you barely speak to each other. Don't agree with the score, but it's a quirky song that appeals my quirky tastes. Tastes vary. Nice reaction.

Man this song brings me back, such a great song and album! Edit: I had a feeling you wouldn't be that impressed by this song. I am probably in the minority in that I prefer this version of GnR compared with say Appetite. While Appetite has some great songs, you couldn't take 2 steps without hearing Welcome or Paradise or Mr. Brownstone. Honestly it got old quick. The Use Your Illusion albums were something different and I dug it. But that's just my 2 cents. Great review nonetheless!

Good review David! I remember when Appetite came out and I wasn't really into it. I was more into the Metallica King Diamond Priest kinda music and I just didn't want to even listen to GnR, even though Appetite was playing at every party I went to lol. But when Illusion 1 and 2 came out, I heard the albums " by accident" and actually thought GnR became more refined, I took them more seriously as musicians, so I gave it a chance. I actually like Civil War, Slash's guitar is really crisp in this one. There are actually some good songs on Illusion 1 and 2. But before and after this album, not a big fan of them lol. I like Slash, not so much because of his playing, but the good I've heard about him as a musician. Keep 'em coming, enjoy your channel!

What I love about this song and the lyrics is that sadly they are still relevant in 2022. Many countries are in the midst of a civil war where people are fighting against government regimes for control and power. The US has intervened in countless wars for no good reason. To this day they are still in Afghanistan and many places in the middle-east where soldiers are dying every day fighting for what exactly? The government and corporations don't care about the lives of others. They use people in a game of war to satisfy their own ego's and greed. It's sad that the world is this way.

I totally agree with you on Axl. I remember that in 1992 they made it to South America (Santiago was my first rock gig ever, with 12 yo, and he was so fucked up that the show started 2 and half hours late), and all this part of the UYI world tour was totally unrespectful with their fans and countries. They screwed up and make a mess in each City they’ve played. But I love this double LP. They have a lot of gems, and from time to time I need to listen them and remember the ol’ good times PS2: the piano is there almost the whole song. It’s because your headphones

I used to very much share your axl sentiments… but after having read slash’s and duffs first book… i read between the lines a bit… while axl was certainly a control freak, a perfectionist, a diva (i suppose?)… i think his biggest flaw was communication… he cut the band out of major band decisions…. Would fly separate… and basically rode in separate circles… However, knowing his a perfectionist… duff and slash were sometimes too drunk/stoned/high to perform… so i suppose i can kind of understand why there was strife… and when axl would refuse to go on stage because slash/duff/steven couldnt perform… slash/duff/steven would open another bottle… heat up another spoon etc… so it was a war of attrition being waged in silence…. And it makes sense why steven was the first to be booted too… I am drawing some of my own conclusions here as neither duff nor slash explicitly stated this… but given all these factors x being the biggest band in the planet… it was just a matter of time Axl of course hasnt released the autobiography (yet) either…

I think a lot of these songs of theirs are more the ballad type songs which tend to grow on you as you read the words to the song and try to figure out what point they are making. Get in the Ring, One in a Million are a bit like that also. Next time try Nice Boys, it is a cover of a Rose Tattoo song, you could double it up with the Rose Tattoo version of the song also.

I know this is a bit of an older reaction. But I sort of had a similar experience with GN’R. ‘Appetite For Destruction’ was a huge album for me- the video for “Welcome To The Jungle” was the first music video I ever saw. Probably fourteen years old, blew my mind. All of a sudden, it was Rock Music. So I got into some of the late ‘80s metal bands. Until GN’R released that ‘Lies’ EP. And I don’t know if people remember or care to, but one song on there featured heavily bigoted lyrics. Not being prejudiced myself, I was young and confused: do I stop being a fan? Do I keep being a fan? I didn’t really know. But then the Seattle scene exploded everywhere and created all that musical upheaval, and I took my focus off bands like GN’R and shifted onto that.

I realize this comes down to personal preference, but it seems like you're always frustrated with songs that have more than 3 verses unless they have a major deviation(s) thrown in. If it's got 4 or more verses, they better throw in something crazy. I get that. But you've also admitted that you aren't big into lyrics. I think the two are kinda related. I actually like Mr. Tambourine man and other lyric heavy songs with a predictable, droning pattern...but it's because of the lyrical content. So it makes sense that if you aren't big into lyrics, songs like American Pie or so many other singer songwriter classics where the dynamics lie not in the arrangement, but in the word play, simply wouldn't appeal to you as much. Now obviously, I don't think Civil War is a singer songwriter classic, but I think it's a little closer to that type of song than a more traditional heavy rock song. That makes sense. That's your preference. I enjoy the reactions. Keep up the awesome work.

In my experience GnR hit it big then got lazy, on substances and the attitude of one Asshole Rose killed them for me, I always thought that Velvet Revolver should have been called Guns WITHOUT roses, Since it was GnR without Axle Rose, The fact that GnR got back together is proof hell froze over. Personally I think that AC/DC beat the stupid out of Axle and made him more tolerable to work with.

Always been a fan of slash though (me being a mediocre guitarist), there are good tracks on both the use your illusion albums, but honestly they are nothing to write home about. I just couldnt stay really into them as axel just ruined things just being a premadona and complete doushe. It's a shame how one asshole can screw up a perfectly good thing.
