    An older video but timeless and a perfect video for the beginner "Airbrusher". I'm 60 years old and just started building models again (Last one built was in 1974). I'm learning that we didn't have the tools back then that model builders do now. Bought me an airbrush and was looking for practical info about how to airbrush and ran across your video. Perfect info and much appreciated! Thanks! Eric

    Tip 1. When you are cleaning your airbrush, increase the air pressure by ten to fifteen psi. Tip 2.use lint free scientific tissue wet with thinner to clean the inside of your paint cup and the outside of airbrush. 3. A 1:2 ratio of paint to thinner will help you achieve candy paint( and is my go to ratio in general) 4.apply photo etch parts with glue before you paint to ensure a strong hold( most hobby glues eat paint). 5. Use an explosion proof exhaust fan when painting with lacquer because the fumes are flammable( the fan is usually more powerful as well and will keep your environment fume free). 6. The distance you hold your part away from the spray will change the texture of the finished paint 7. Use a moisture trap as water will cause a splatter effect and ruin your finish( I do my painting near a fish tank so I use one on my tank and my gun) 8. Make sure you use the rapid drying thinner for metallic colors or the metal flakes will sink into the paint and effect the metallic look 9. Always use the slower drying thinner for non-metallic colors to ensure a perfect finish 10. Always use a static free brush on your parts to get rid of the static electric buildup from sanding that will attract dust to your paint job

    I just got back into gunpla after 20 years after my initial interest in it. Back then I just built the kits and added stickers. Thia go around I really wanna apply time into my kits to make them look exceptional and I've been very intimidated by the thought of airbrushing. Thanks for helping me ease into this! Great video!

    Another tip for beginngers - Although priming with a rattlecan is absolutely fine, it does release a lot of VOCs into the air as opposed to using a primer that you can load into your airbrush (which could still have VOCs depending on which type you use, but significantly less) and it will continue to off-gas for some time. Same goes with topcoats. When I started doing final topcoats with the airbrush over rattlecans, everything was just so much better and my models weren't off-gassing for weeks.

    If you live in a high altitude area (like here in CO) I would recommend warming up the can. Even at room temp sometimes the lower air pressure can play havoc with these. Warming the cans helps with an even spray.

    Getting a refresher before I start ab today. One question on sanding and washing: if you sand and not wash, would the dust cause issues with the results of some painting? More specific, paints that have a high shine, finishes that will show imperfections? I read that in regards to candy paint work, it will reveal a lot such as uneven surface, chips, what's left of not completely removing marks where nubs used to be, etc. Would this be an exception to really go into all aspects of prep, as assumingly accumulation of sanding dust will not give a surface as smooth and consistent if it was washed off. But that's my "educated guess" from reading and going off of other similar work involving preparation.

    You can get primer in an array of colors. Look into companies that sell primarily to miniature war gamers. Vallejo (bottle only) and The Army Painter (spray can only) both sell primer in about 20 different colors and I believe that Citadel (i.e. Games Workshop, who produce Warhammer/40K) also does.

    From my personal research (I also bought an airbrush recently): 1. Although you can use lacquer paints in an airbrush, you need to consider the consequences of it: the vapour created by the airbrush can be dangerous if you breathe it in - not like is fine to breathe in the acrylic paints but, while is safer to use acrylics in you house where you eat and sleep, it is not recommended the same for other type of paints. In any case, good ventilation is needed and masks, spray booths, even cleaning gloves are recommended. Better safe than sorry. 2. Honestly, search videos with cleaning the airbrush, here on youtube, or even google, you will get an idea. Shortly, use water (distilled recommended but not necessary) between colors and thinner when you finished a session and you will not paint that day anymore. Always clean the airbrush after a session, because, again, better safe than sorry. Also watch out for what thinners do you use, because some of them can eat up rubber components inside the airbrush, if you leave the airbrush too much soaked in them. The newer airbrushes tend to use silicone based components nowdays, so maybe this will not be the case, if your airbrush is a new model. 3.If you want transition between the colors, leave the old color in and mix the new color with the old color and spray a layer otherwise rinse the airbrush with water until the old color is cleared then put the new color.

  • @BoundByGundams

    @BoundByGundams

    3 жыл бұрын

    A top coat is just a protective clear layer you put on at the end to protect to paint underneath. There are different finishes of top coat. So applying a glossy top coat will give the final appearance a glossy look. There are several finishes like matte, semi-gloss, satin, etc. but it’s all top coat. Just depends how you want the final finish to look like.

    Lacquer, acrylic, or enamel for this gloss coat before you panel line with enamel wash? Will lacquer gloss smear the paint if you use acrylic or enamel?

  • @andyliu8951

    @andyliu8951

    you will want a lacquer most likely, lacquers are stronger than enamels and acrylic therefore if you use enamel thinner it shouldn't smear the lacquer coat as long you let it cure

    Hello, I'm one of the begginners. Thanks for sacrificing your lungs for us! lol Jokes apart, here's my question: I have a toy from Bandai's (it's an action figure, that's made of plastic for all I know). I want to change the color from pink to blue. Since it's a simply change (most of the figure is the color I want to replace and the few places that aren't can be covered by tape) and there's no way to dissamble the figure that I know of, I can just spray paint it? Or should I still apply the white layer and then try out the airbrush thing? To be honest I wonder if it's possible just to spray it. Another important detail with the figure is that you are supposed to put stickers on it. What should pay attention to after I paint the figure with the color I want? Should I use any other kind of product so the glue of the sticker will, well, stick to the painted figure? Anyway, here's hope my questions are clear. I'm not a native english speaker so language barrier can be a pain. Specially when looking for the recomended produts.

    if you can't disassemble it, the last option is to mask off the areas where your blue paint is unwanted. very difficult to do since you need to be precise with the masking tape. better not do that next time

    I know this is a year late and maybe you already did it but my advise is. Lightly sand the whole thing, prime it with fine tamiya primer use fine layers, paint it all your main color while masking the scond color parts with rubber masking paint and a small brush, let it dry for a while but don't let the rubber sit for hours. After it dries, remove the masking and then do a reverse masking and coper the rest of the figure with paper towels as much as you can and lightly apply the secondary color. Once that's done let it try and apply clear coat. Good luck.

    If you’ve ever tried it you’d know. The marker’s ink just does not agree with paint. It either doesn’t come out, is uneven, or the nib scratches up the paint.

  • @BoundByGundams

    @BoundByGundams

    Vicent Reyes are you just trying to layer because you need a gray base? The base will determine the shade of you top layers. So if you prime with white, colors on top will be brighter. Gray is neutral. Black will be the darkest. You can layer paint how you wish so yes what youre asking will work. Just be sure to let it dry but just know that the primer doesn’t HAVE to be grey.

    @@BoundByGundams I do a sort of effect of darker edges around the panels so that it looks like the gundam is weld together. I couldn't get my hands of grey primer so I was wondering if white primer and a darker base acrylic would do the trick.
