    I hope that Parodius Da comes to the arcade archives on Switch, along with Twinbee Yahho, Fantastic Parodius and Sexy Parodius. This last game would be rated M because of its risque themes.

    Just picked this up, I feel like a speed selector for your ship would have improved this game immensely. I always felt like my ship wasn’t as fast as it needed to be considering some of the enemy bullet speed.

    3:40 Wait... So the game encourages you to play with only one shield left, but the reward for doing so is to get more shields, that you're still encouraged to not use? That seems like they didn't think their cunning gameplay through. Also, that first level theme just sounded like the Seinfeld soundtrack to me, haha. 😀

    It's an odd one, but it does give further advantages. You start with 3 shields. Lose them all at the start of stage 1 and it's pretty easy to beat the boss, get the extend and get upgraded to 4 shields. At the start of stage 2 though, you now have 4 shields to lose meaning an even bigger multiplier, but - for me at least - far less of a guarantee of making it to the end of the stage. So you can either suicide or accept your score from stage one is the only bonus you'll get. If you do get through stage 2 having suicided, you should be close to the next extend by the start of stage 3, which will then give you 5 shields. So by now, you've got a very sizeable points bonus (nearly 2M versus about 7-800K for someone who didn't suicide) and earned yourself 5 shields. At this point, I would personally 100% just opt for keeping those shields and using them to aid survival, but I guess there are some expert players who will keep their shields at zero the whole game. It is a strange system, in that it's either all-in or all-out, and my main complaint is it doesn't really affect how you play the game at all. Whether you've got 5 shields or none, you never want to take hits anyway, so the scoring doesn't add anything to actually do.

    If you’re going to compare all early 90s shmups to the paragon that is Batsugun, I think you’re going to find that not many ‘represent the era, but a slightly older one.’ In general, I think you’re a little too harsh on this puppy. But hey, not a negative review - and I’m glad you covered it at all.

    Fair comment - Batsugun is a bit of an exception, so for sure, it's a bit of an unfair comparison. At the same time though, there was also stuff like Grindstormer, RayForce, Sengoku Aces and Mahou Daisakusen in the same year - all of which were pushing things in different directions. Even Thunder Dragon 2 from NMK themselves - which ACA are bringing soon - has a bit more oomph to it. That said, I did, and in fact still am, enjoying GunNail and I'm really glad we're getting the chance to experience it.

    It's pretty cool but brutally difficult for me. Not as ball-stomping as Tatsujin-Ou, maybe, but I found it harder than Thunder Dragon.

    Very quick question. I've actually played this a fair bit on mame and like the game except for one thing... The damn warning sound that plays when you just have one shield left. Is that BS removed/can it be optionally removed? It's highly annoying to play with that blaring in your ears constantly. Fun fact it can actually be removed on the original PCB with a workaround but the last sale I know of a board was €1400 and, as fun as this game is, I'm not paying that to play it again.

    This game has terrible input latency. I just played it on the Switch Lite. This is not a quality release like something we would get from M2. Kinda bad emulation.

  • @ShmupsOnSwitch

    @ShmupsOnSwitch

    There's a massive gap between "a quality release like we get from M2" and "bad emulation". This, like pretty much all ACA releases, sits in between those two extremes. Also, from what I understand, playing handheld with JoyCons tends to add a little extra lag. I don't have a frame counter, and I can't say what it's like with a Switch Lite, but what I can say for sure is that playing on the TV with either a ProController or stick was definitely not "terrible".

    Seems from tests others have done (not this game, but many others) there should be less input lag in handheld mode. The pro controller is pretty well known for having quite bad input lag across the board however. Most (if not all) of the ACA games I bought on switch had noticeable enough input lag that I kinda gave up on them. Sucks, because I would love to play these NMK games.

    @@johnsundberg7697 Tried it on the Switch Lite. I don’t mean to sound like a douche, I’m only being honest, but I think that if you play these games on PCBs, or on an FPGA system like Mister, or a super high quality port, when you play something that has a lot of latency, it just doesn’t feel right. And I might be alone on this, but I think the Arcade Archive releases just don’t feel right. Even on a Switch Lite. Handheld mode.
