When I served in the Finnish military we used a high-quality AK-variant called RK-95, and being a spotter in a sniper team I had mine fitted with an ACOG, and it was accurate enough to hit targets that were partly hidden behind trees etc. at ranges up to 450 meters, and anything closer than 300 was a sure hit. Also as reliability goes, my first service rifle during my 8-week basic training was an earlier model RK-62 manufactuerd in 1972, probably been fired thousands of times and bathed in swamps and marshes and dirt and snow dozens of times (I know I alone did it more than once a week), never jammed, no rust whatsoever and was still perfectly capable of hitting a 5cm-diameter bullseye from 150 meters using standard iron sights.

every cheapo AR manufacturer guarentees 1MOA these days that equates to 3cm at 150 meters. not the $2800 AR's, grab a delton, R-Guns, etc... cheapo AR and if it can't do under 4cm at 150M, return it under warranty.

The AK is what a war gun is suposed to be, the AR is what a urban tactical "swat" gun is suposed to be, where u go on a mission when its done u go back to the station and have it cleaned (light, compact, customizable, etc). The AK u can be lying in a ditch pretending to be dead for 3 days of rain / snow / mud and blood get up and start firing.

Eric H. By and large I’d say no. It’s hit and miss with wasrs. Some are ok rifles, but it’s always a gamble. You really have to judge them on an individual basis. Check the rivets, check the sight post, make sure the rifle is straight from the barrel to the end of the stock and you really have to monitor the deformation of the bolt and the head spacing on them. Yet, I’ve seen some good wasrs. My brother has an ok Wasr. If it was me though, I’d either get an Arsenal with the milled receiver or the vepr rifle.

  • @thorman944

very poor analogy. a spear is superior to a battle axe in trained hands. a villager will do better with the battle axe, a warrior will do better with the spear. a warrior will do better than a villager with either, but the maximum potential in the equation is the warrior with the spear. a bit less 'muzzle energy', but 2x the range when used for melee combat and the potential for ranged combat as well. an axe is a slashing weapon with at most a 5.5 foot arc (2 foot arm length +3.5 foot axe handle). a spear is a quarterstaff bludgeoning weapon with a maximum 9.5 foot arc if striking with the butt, a halbard (edge on a pole) slashing weapon with same 9.5 foot arc, a piercing weapon (if thrust) with same 9.5 foot range, AND a ranged weapon (if thrown) that is accurate to 75+ feet. untrained villiager = arm them with the axe. warrior = arm them with the spear. and please save the 'this is anachronistic and does not apply' comment... Went through Paris Island in the 90's and the spear (rifle with bayonette) was still taught. Thrusts, slashes, bludgeons, blocks... these maneuvers still taught in USMC boot

The basic shortcoming of the AK safety is that you are familiar with American rifle handling rules. In the Russian military the second the rifle is unslung the safety is off.(None of this keep your weapon at ready with the safety on stuff.) It does not go back to safe until you are going to sling the rifle back over your shoulder. For some reason the Russians feel that the PERSON is the safety and relying on a mechanical device to protect your from yourself is flawed ideology..

I don't understand why everyone bitches about the safety on Russian guns. The first gun i have ever bought was a Mosin and i didn't think the safety was that big of a deal on it but everyone i met always complained about it.

Its because they are applying American methods of thought to a Russian made weapon. As we are seeing in the Ukraine the Russian way is blunt force trauma(my personal favorite) not the US way of finessing and respecting their individuality until they are no longer of use then killing them. If you compare basic ideologies you see the parallel between their weapons as well.

True, but one philosophy is more compatible with christian/civilized values than the other. Surgical precision (hitting the bad guy and saving the hostage) is the goal and is what makes the good guys good and the bad guys bad. Anyone can field a larger force with larger caliber weapons and dominate the field. Those of us that believe in the merits of civilized society understand the merits of superior firepower being achieved by more critical hits resulting from more well-aimed shots versus more rounds being expelled downrange by a larger force as being philosophically superior. I would rather be right and dead than wrong and 'the bad guy'. That doesn't make me bad or stupid, it makes me an American, a good guy, a warrior that understands the equation and uses superior training and conditioning to overcome the enemy, rather than ruthless use of force.

thorman944 as an American infantryman that way of thinking is flawed. We fight to win in the infantry period. Yeah we don't wipe out villages, or carpet bomb but as far as firefights go we win and that's it. We bring forth all our firepower and kill the enemy. Just remember if you are in a fair fight your tactics suck.

Any AK accuracy quickly goes to hell once the barrel heats up a little. From minute of man to minute of unpredictability after 5-10 shots. Not so with the AR, 2 MOA or less all day. Just my experience. YMMV. So if sustained fire and accuracy are important go with the AR, otherwise you'll have to wait until the barrel cools down on an AK to regain any sort of predictable accuracy.

I have to disagree, my AK accuracy is fine throughout the day. AK 103 and 104's are way more accurate than there 20th century predecessors as well. Now I will admit after 300 yards it is useless(pre AK103 and so forth), but I got a M1A for over 300 yards. Never caught the AR/5.56 bug after fiver years of shooting rifles so far. But that is just me.

The US military went from the M14 to the M16/M4 in the 60's and the Russian went from the AK-47 to the 74 in 74. Why did the worlds 2 largest superpowers abandon the 7.62x 51 and x39 for 5.56 and 5.45 calibers? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.56%C3%9745mm_NATO Weight of 7.62x51 and relative inaccuracy of x39 and some weight issues. I personally can take advantage of all the 5.56 accuracy has to offer and can't take advantage of the reliability of the AK if I cant hit my target with one. A weak hit is always much better than a strong miss.

Those that don't like the AK 47 have never had an Arsenal. If you had an Arsenal and didn't like it your crazy. AK 47 wins hands down in my mind for a battle rifle. now if you are wanting surgical precision and accuracy AR 15.What people seem to forget though is that in a battle situation you would be aiming for center mass and an AK does that job just fine.

  • @glandhound

Pekka Rastas The AK 47 is the greatest battle rifle ever made. It can take any abuse you give it and fires every time. It is not a precision weapon, it was never meant to be. In a defense situation you want stopping power, reliability, and accuracy. The AK does great in all areas. Like I said before a center mass hit is all you need to incapacitate an individual, you don't need AR accuracy. BTW the AR 15 is a great rifle too! very accurate and a great caliber, they are a little bit more finicky though.

  • @glandhound

scott davis It's an assault rifle and meant for assault ranges not exceeding 300 meters, battle rifles are meant to perform beyond those ranges. FN FAL is a battle rifle and generally most are that use 7.62x51 NATO or maybe even the .308. For the most part I agree with what you are saying. I'm just a bit anal about proper definitions of things, I would also differentiate with AK-47 and AKM, but maybe that's just me.

Pekka Rastas Very true a lot of what you said. Maybe I should have worded it close range assault / battle rifle LOL! The 308 ballistics are much better than the 762 x 39 round and they have better range and accuracy. Good point about the AK and the AKM there are slight differences.

The comparison between an AR-15 and an AK-47 isn't really correct either. He should have taken an AK-74 since those two rifles were built around the same time, whereas the AK-47 was built 20 years earlier, at a time the US didn't have an assault rifle. A fair comparison would be the AK-47 and the AR-10, the predecessor of the AR-15 since the timeframe between those two rifles is the same as the AK-74 and AR-15.

Things to consider. The AK47 is a very good weapon. However, I'll take an AR15 any day and here's why. The weight of it. Trying carrying a firearm on a 20 mile road march with an AK47, the weapon and ammo is much heavier. The cost of ammo is much cheaper with an AR15. You can carry more ammo with an lighter weapon, you may carry 150 with an AK but with an AR15 you can carry 250. Weight is a huge factor! Imagine the soldiers going up and down hills in Afghanistan. The average distance for combat with a rifle is about 150 meters, a more powerful round that shoots further becomes a non issue. Are you going to be hitting moving targets from beyond 300 meters? If your a trained sniper yes but not your average soldier. People talk about the weakness of the 5.56 round but look up what it does to ballistic gel, people don't get hit by an 5.56 and think "oh that wasn't that bad." It tumbles after contact and does great internal damage. People talk about the AK being more durable if mud gets into it, I would agree with that. But my question is why the hell are you dragging your weapon through the mud anyway? Some may disagree with me on the last point. However, when you compare and contrast them I'll take the AR15, I can carry more ammo and I won't be as tired having lugged around a heavy firearm and ammo. Plus, I'm a damn good shot with it.

I think this is a comparison of typical AR-15 and "AK" style weapons owned by American civilians. I think that in general there are better configurations of the AR-15 in general than are available for the AK platform, and variants of the AK are just the best of a limited design, a limited design which was the best Kalishnikov could make in his political-economic environment. Vz58 is still a cooler gun.

I don't think you understood, he meant the average person who either seldom goes shooting or hasn't trained with a firearm. I would be bold enough to say as I have seen it , that I wouldn't let an average person shoot any of my firearms past 100 yards as it would be a waste of their learning time and if they really weren't getting it, even after correction dangerous. A gunny like yourself should understand at 400 yards a lot of guns have to be held with a holdover feet above the target and if a person is aiming point blank at the target they are going to keep mudding rounds until they find out how to compensate. A marine is past that "learning curve" within the first few range session and more trigger time = acquired knowledge/skill. Open sights at 400 yards for anyone who has even tried shooting at 200 yards knows that there is a lot to it so I would say their statement still holds true. Even at 200 yards with a good scope I can't seen someone who has only played video games or read online comments making a 2" group (or even a 1" group at 25-50yards) consistently without serious trigger time put in and knowledge of there equipment. People need to realize you aren't going to just go out, buy a gun with a scope and have the bullets touch downrange at any distance without some experience.

That is because it is up to the task. When the SHTF, I want my AK. And please, never compare a 50 grain projectile to the power of a 123 grain. Its just silly. And From my experience, having qualifyied with multiple AR's, It's reliability is shit. Unless it is new. Or in ideal conditions. And with my VEPR, I can get 1.in groups at 100 yards no problem.
