As a collector I've had people call me a "gun nut" and imply that I'm a danger because I own fifty guns. It's like saying that a car collector who owns fifty cars is more likely to speed than someone who owns one car. It's complete nonsense.

  • @Sheridantank

Well, technically I would guess a car collector is more likely to drive "enthusiastically". Speeding isn't inherently dangerous. I agree completely with your point, but I'm sure there's a better analogy.. Like saying someone with a lot of silverware is more likely to overweight.

At the risk of sounding self-righteous, I'll invite you to ride along with any ambulance crew on any day responding to an MVA where speed was involved. (I am an EMT, myself) There are a LOT of factors involved in speeding that do, indeed, make it inherently dangerous. (Depending, of course, upon what you call 'speeding.' Some day if you're 1 mph too fast, you're 'speeding' and therefore a danger. That's not what I mean, by any stretch) To say otherwise is, frankly, to ignore the realities of speed vs control, reaction time and physics. I do agree there's a better analogy, though. Absolutely.

I thank you Eric and Chad! I can relate very much to this gripe. I own a very modest gun collection that has accumulated over a 30 year span secured in a safe. My girlfriend of 2 years had never fired a gun but was interested when we first started dating so I took her out to shoot steel in the AZ desert. She enjoyed it and even posted pics on social media. Now that she's moved into my home a year later she makes comments when I have ammo or magazines delivered. For example "Are you planning something?" and it offends the shit out of me! I'm about to give her the boot.

It's pretty simple. Every different one can serve a different purpose like you said, for plinking, hunting and self defense. Not one gun can fill that role. Plus we like them because of the mechanics of them. There's some that operate different than others like a single action or double action and we appreciate the mechanics of different ones. Then you get to the history side, some firearms have historical meanings attached to them like the M1 Garand, Mosin Nagant, all of which served in WW2. So you may have a collector that collects ww2 firearms or others of a different time period. Then there's ones where you see a movie and you think "That gun is cool" and so you have guns from movies that you like and it can relate to pop culture, someone brings up Die Hard the movie and you say "Hey I got a 92fs like Bruce Willis used." So that is why some people can own a few.

I only needed a pistol with a decocker and a single reliable rifle, but the limited roster and compliance parts made me get about 10 times that. It's hard trying to figure out what pointless compromise works best, so I either keep buying and collecting or sell them to someone who might turn out to be a weirdo. Guns are highly regulated, expensive and rare commodities with EXTREME VALUE in turbulent times. They are also mechanical devices which can and do BREAK. (Like the weapons in Breath of the Wild) Therefore it is PRUDENT to have backups, and it is especially intelligent to standardize on common models like 9mm Glocks and standard 5.56mm DI AR15’s. Parts, accessories and ammunition should be redundant.

You may also want to have multiple platforms in different calibers to offset ammunition shortages in the future. For instance I prefer .45's but I would have a 9mm in case I couldn't find .45's in another ammo shortage like this last year.

Then there are us mad lads who like less common calibers so when an ammo shortage first hits, we still have time to get ammo. While not particularly uncommon, .40S&W is uncommon enough that there were entire pallets of it at my local store when 9mm and .45ACP were all dried up. Gave me some breathing room to buy a reserve of ammo for my pistol. Same with .303 British ammo. Not particularly rare, but uncommon enough there was plenty for a while well into November of 2020. Always nice to have guns in less common calibers so you have options when the others run scarce.

@@Gottaculat Personally I am not a huge fan of the snappy (in my opinion) 40 S&W. Tho I do have one as an option as well. As I said it's always good to have options. 22LR, 40 S&W, 45ACP and 9mm are what I consider the basic usually available calibers for pistols, and I recommend to all who will listen to have at least 1 weapon in each caliber if they can afford it. Being former Army I had the 1 is none, 2 is 1 and 3 is 'good to go' doctrine pretty thoroughly driven home into me.

@@Dang_Near_Fed_Up I know one of the guys who designed and tested the .40 for S&W, and he basically told me that there’s no real reason to carry one over a modern 9mm.

@@hansgruber9685 I am not a fan of the 40 S&W, nor the 9mm either as far as that goes. I grew up with a .45 and it is what I prefer, but it does have the down side of limited rounds compared to other calibers. But I still prefer to have access to weapon from each caliber so as to have options when ammo is less available. You never know when ammo might dry up again.
