YES so happy to see this! Jim was my teacher for a few years and basically changed my life as a guitarist and working professional. I hit that middle plateau many of us guitar players tend to hit after learning all our basic food groups. Jim broke that rut and set me on a journey I’m still on. And you Justin are a great artist and a sweetheart. "Teaching" you was the easiest thing I've ever done as an instructor.

I saw Jim once a few years ago in Minneapolis, before the pandemic. He played brilliantly, of course. I bought an album and a CD from him and spoke with him a bit: just the nicest guy in the world! I've been listening to him since the late '90s. I think that he's one of the greatest guitarists ever.

Jim is an absolute monster of a player and I've been listening to him for years now. He goes on stage with just an amp that's got everything turned up to 10 and in his hands the Tele controlling everything. Love it!

I saw Jim playing with the Ten Gallon Cats years ago in SF and was blown away. I had just picked up the guitar at that point and thought, "Man, it would be awesome if he taught lessons". A couple of years later I randomly found out he did and jumped on it. His methods of teaching were very intuitive and easy to "get" and it's a very treasured time in my life. Got turned on to all kinds of new music as well. Regrettably, I moved to Oregon for a job (and life) change and he soon moved to NYC thereafter. His lessons and music endure and I will never forget them and the learning continues! Thanks for carrying the torch here- subscribed!

I was in a band with Jim briefly in 1977 as his drummer in Redwood City, CA. The connection was instant and deep; I only wish I could have stayed with him as he grew to be the monster he is now. I got a chance to meet up with him again in Detroit a couple years ago. It was great to hang together again and talk about the old times; I still have the recordings and I shared them with him.

I'm a very close follower of Jim I grew up with Jim the guitar is part of him and verse wise he is part of the guitar and he has become a big part of the guitar and I am extremely proud to know him

Jim only plays a Princeton. He opened for the Who with Norah Jones, and he was told by Pete Townsend that he could not believe what he was getting out of that little amp. Jim is the Princeton KING.

That was elegant. I love Roy Buchanan. JC did his own thing with it. He had that barbed wire Roy Buchanan tone but it was still round somehow? I don't know how that works, but he did it. I love the guys who can give it to you on a Tele, man. And yes, releasing the 4 down to the 3 is...humbling. Lol. Thank you, Michael. Educational and Inspirational as always, brother.

Also- Jim has the most beautiful 62 custom color strat signed by Roy, you ought to check out Roy’s ‘Hey Joe’ or ‘the messiah will come’ both legendary moments in music let alone guitar, Roy and Jim are special cats for sure, kind of stand alone

amazing homage to Roy Buchanan mimicking some of his techniques and licks... it's required a masterful player to do that

In other videos with Jim he mentions his amp settings (amp volume 10 most importantly). What I learned from him is that he has an acoustic musicians control of dynamics (as in your volume is set in stone/ no boost or volume pedal). His great achievement is conditioning his dynamic touch to an extent that on 10 he can still sound clean. It’s a VERY wide range of volume, and is difficult to approach unless youre used to it. With that said, his control of tone is even more amazing after understanding he is doing what a compressor does with just his fingers.

I was blessed to see Jim live a bunch of years ago here in Maine when he was touring in support of his “Orange” c.d.

I used to see Jim with his band The 10 Gallon Cats every Thursday at the Paradise Lounge in San Francisco from the mid 90's - the early 2000's. He brought Nora Jones back with him in 2001 after his first trip to NYC, we didn't know who she was when she joined the band at Bruno's in the mission SF, it was a great night let me tell you!! link to the Bruno's gig below

Ive wanted to request a Jim Campilongo video for a while now. 👍🏻

I’ve been a Campilongo fan for years, as he is one of the few players left that actually has his own unique style and sound these days. The first time I heard this tune I was expecting way more “Roy,” and now hearing it again years later with a much more developed ear, my conclusion is still the same. That is, other than the volume and tone knob swells, very few of these lines are reminiscent of something you would’ve heard Roy play. This “homage” is about 25% Roy (the tone, a couple bends and the staccato ascending/descending licks) and the other 75% is all Campilongo. That aside, Jim is a monster and the tune is a great starting point for anyone looking to add some really “outside” ideas to a standard blues tune. Very cool selection, Michael 🤘

There are a ton of players with their own style out there. No more, no less than any time in history. Campilongo is hit and miss. I have one of his albums American Hips and it is a bore with very few exciting moments. I have heard him play live on video way better than that.

@@dragonpundit.6443 I’d love to hear some players you recommend then. There are a lot of really great players around, but most of them remind me of someone else. Campilongo at least seems to have his own thing without too many things that sound similar to players that came before him. Also, I agree with you on the hit or miss comment, as he does lose me on a lot of tunes.

Despite my comment, i am a fan! What he does that is really good is really really GOOD! I like his tone, his basso approach, his Gatton tricks...i also think Buchanan is very over-rated but that is just my opinion. It won't hurt anyone.

@@dragonpundit.6443 I’ll give you Eric Johnson, the Edge, and maybe Fripp. Out of that entire list, they’re the the only guys I would consider that came out with something truly unique to my ear. The rest all remind me of guys that came before them. Not to say they aren’t great, or that they didn’t do it better than the players that came before them, just that I don’t consider them to have a wholly unique style. To be fair, I’m not a metal fan so the I can’t really comment fairly on any of the shredder cats. My definition of “having his own style” has strict parameters I guess 🤷🏼‍♂️😂

Got onto Jim from a Guitar Player review a million years ago. They reviewed Table for One, a fabulous album. He’s played in Minneapolis with his trio a few times in the last few years and is always extraordinary, one of the true great guitarists of our time.

For the C chord in the main lick, he is coming from the d# to the e (not from the d) and that makes all the difference.

Love Jim’s playing. So interesting and musical. You have to check out him and Nels Cline covering Hot Lanta - I was at that show about right in front of the band. Just amazing

It can't be stressed often enough that Blues for Roy owes most of its spectacular tricks to the Roy from the piece's title, the late, great, criminally overlooked Roy Buchanan. But having said that, Jim's an absolute genius. And he's the one who ties it all together masterfully and offers an homage that borrows liberally but is in no way derivative.

Just to see the original roy Buchanan doing that live and even better sweet dreams, wich is a bit emotional, but what tons of ideas nearly in every bar and than the sound its even much greater with his big 15" speakers. Having done that, you would not come back to this trying to imitate

It's amazing how far-reaching and expressive his bends are. I would have assumed just listening that he was using a whammy bar. And that volume control... just like Roy. Wow.

Thanks for introducing me to this guy Michael, hadn't heard him before, super cool! He does in some ways remind me of another recent discovery to me, Greg Koch, who has quickly become one of my favourite guitar players, super skilled also.

If you like this you should check out the guy this is in tribute to, Roy Buchanan, if you're not familiar with him. His Live in Austin set would be a great starting point. Dude was an absolute wizard with a tele in his hands.

When he went to that weird 'chicken picken' then commenced to playing some waaay deep _outside_ stuff that woulda made Ornette Coleman proud-in a 1 4 5 _blues_ , doncha know- man I'm a fan for life. I'm typing this at exactly the point where you broke in to comment. Man, I'm right in the middle of recording my own music, just took a break to grab a snack, and saw this. Imma finish this video _then_ go back to my own stuff. Check it out, I'm putting off my own music to listen to this guy and your analysis (ain't gonna lie, I watch you as much for your analysis as I do for the great musicians to whom I am introduced through you), so that is how great this dude is!🤟🖤💥

Michael, as the teacher and lover of music you are, why didn’t you educate your audience about Roy (Buchanan) to whom the song is an homage? Roy was one of the earliest, most proficient players with the best tone, amazing rhythm and great phrasing who made tremendous use of tone/volume rolling on his Telecaster.

I was just surprised that Michael didn’t at least make some reference on either a technical or musical level re: Roy’s distinctive sound/technique that clearly was an inspiration for Jim’s song and simply asked why. No criticism was expressed or intended.

You know, this would be extremely un-Palmisano, but I'd love to see a video where he *hates* what's going on.
