You never get shorted on the conviction or the effort the song requires with Morissette. You get 100% whether there is one person she is singing to or a hundred thousand. She is not built that way. To her the music demands her best, and she gives it. I love her mouth shape when she sings, ' a beauuuuutiful pie'. You are so right about she is so precise. She may have been given more gifts in the realm of raw materials in her body and how it was constructed. But if you don't think she has worked her brains out you would be monumentally mistaken. Watching her I am reminded of a story about Duane Allman. This guitarist who could count nearly every great players of his time and those who have come after. He brought the slide guitar to the forefront with his marvelous play. He and Eric Clapton had very mutual admiration for each others play. Anyway, one day they were talking on the phone and Duane said to Eric, " I just about have this guitar thing mastered, he said, I don't even have to think about where my fingers go, I just think about the music and the sound I want to play and my fingers just go there." I think Morissette is in that same place. She no longer worries about whether she can do anything vocally. She knows she can sing whatever and however she wants. This last couple of years she has worked so hard to get here. I think she is ready now to claim the crown from whomever, we as Americans think it belongs to. She will wear it graciously too because, though she is confident, she doesn't insist everyone kiss her ring. It's almost just the opposite she will give everyone their due. That's what makes her so special. Diva talent without Diva attitude, a potent combination.
