My son got a guitar from Santa last Christmas. I couldn't put it down. So I bought my own and put it in my living room. I practice every day. I'm now learning wanted d.o.a. from you!

Hey Marty. My dad is very ill. He’s an old rocker. I’m going to a festival where a friend is playing in a band and he offered to let me come up and play if my dad is well enough to sing. I asked my dad what song he would do and he said Larry Graham’s “One In A Million” Odd for a rocker but he loves R&B. Huge request here!! In the next week can you post simple chord progressions for that song??? I know it’s a big ask. I’m hoping to make a lasting memory. I struggle to read music, but one play through of your tutorials and I got it. I used someone else’s video to learn. When I play the song through my PA and go through the chord progressions, it sound horrible. If you can help THANK YOU!!!
Marty where are you? I don't recognize this place. Are you ok? Blink if you were kidnapped.
marty always dresses like he's on the beach having the time of his life... I LOVE IT it's so motivating and it makes me happy to learn guitar

Me: Just started learning the pentatonic Also me: “why Not do a deep dive into phrygian and myxolidian?“

That seems to be me too. I tend to jump into things far beyond my skills etc. But I think that's what keeps us from getting bored.

i think it's good to dabble with modes early on, but learning all the positions of the pentatonic scale somewhat well before really diving to modes, gives you a great base to build other scales on! the five positions are actually surprisingly easy to learn, i learned the basic root on the lowest string position and the one above that first, then after i knew those by heart i added the others. what really made me learn them all well, was to learn them 3 strings at a time. so i started with Am pentatonic, and figured out all the notes in all 5 positions, on the G, B and E strings first. played them up and down for couple days. then i did the same for the E, A and D strings, then i tied them together in a day and boom, a week after i could play every position! i continued to go through them couple times a day every day and now about two months after, i can actually move the scales to pretty much whatever root note i want and the shapes are there! this 3 strings at a time up and down method ensured, that i got more repetitions on all the positions, rather than just trying to clumsily stumble my way through the full 6 string scale patterns. it was way easier, and i mean waaay easier to lock the shapes to memory 3 strings at a time rather than 6 strings at a time, i learned 3 positions just as fast as i learned the first one which i approached by trying to learn the whole shape at once. next stop is trying to do the same to major and minor scales and modes is something i want to try to understand aswell now. sry for long winded text, hope this helps somebody at all and feel free to ask if something's incoherent, i try to clear up on that. 2nd language so hard to explain concepts sometimes 😁 cheers!
Just finished a couple courses on scales and it explained modes for me in an understandable way for the first time. Then I came across this video and you really cleared the air! Thank you for this straight forward way to look at modes! I wish I had not been so intimidated by the concept for so many years! I'm an old dude now but I'm learning many new tricks.
F-lydian sounded like some Simpsons action there for a second or two. Thanks Marty for making Modes consumable and understandable.

Yep, I think Marty was trying to emphasise that in his example. It’s a great example of that Lydian feel.

MODES! Ahhh!!!! This is when I stopped learning theory when I was a teenager. Daunting, elusive subject!!!! Now, I’m coming back to it at 40 and teaching my 10-year old son to play (bought him his first guitar this year). Can’t wait for the chance to look at your class, Marty. (Love that Gibson, btw-been dreaming of one for some time now). Thanks for all you do!!!
Marty, when Rick Beato talks about modes, it goes over my head so fast I get the urge to reflexively duck! But my bet is that you make modes easy, natural and useful! Thanks for your efforts, man! You are my favorite guitar teacher! :)
Marty, Im a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom. I struggle with PTSD and use music as a way of coping. Ive watched many instructors online and find you the most helpful. I like the way you break everything down and the energy you have about you. Thank you for doing what you do!

As soon as he switched to Dorian I could tell that was the mode Santana used a lot in his early days when creating songs and solos. It sounds honestly just like him.
I really appreciate all that you do Marty, you have helped me grow as a guitar player and as a musician. Thanks for all that you do.
Perfect way of explaining modes! Just thinking of the major scale but focusing on a certain interval as your home base makes this so much easier to understand
My son and I have learnt so much about playing guitar from your videos over the past seven years. You make things easy to understand not boggle us with words and fast playing. Without you I would not got as far as I have. Thank you very much Marty for taking the time to help us.
Marty this short crash course has helped me so much in understanding modes. From the first couple of minutes I was able to to get the jist of things. Just the crash course has helped me immensely with soloing and spicing up my solos. Spewing that I can't afford to get the full course. Thanks Marty for the great work!!!
i'd love this course as i will be off from work for 3 months after an operation starting 26/5/21 - thanks for everything Marty !

You've come a long, long way & so have I since the first lesson I saw you do, it was playing Smoke On the Water with one finger. I would not be where I am on guitar without your channel, thanks Marty.
All of Marty's courses are awesome. I picked up the essential licks and lead guitar a few weeks ago. Tremendous.

A maneira como agarras a guitarra e como te deslocas livremente no braço é verdadeiramente admirável. Sigo-te há já uns bons anos e és dos poucos onde volto sempre. Obrigado pelo teu trabalho e pela tua inspiração! The way you take the guitar and you play freely on it's neck is truly admirable. I've been following you for a good few years now and you are one of the few I keep coming back to. Thank you for your work and your inspiration!

Love the course and that shirt!
I have been watching your free videos and you help keep my confidence up. I am raising 3 grandkids (long story) so time and money is tight but I refuse to give up whatever time I can put in for practice and it helps that you offer some free stuff so that we can continue to learn and grow. Thank you so much for that Marty you rock!
Whenever I want to take a break from my boring practicing I can always hop over to MartyMusic to learn a fun song quickly. Marty's style of teaching songs is great for beginners like me. (I've been playing since November.) I'm sure he's helping guitarists of all skill levels. Thanks Marty.
I love when he plays something he definitely didn't plan and improvised on a spot and it sounds amazing and he gets SUCH A HAPPY FACE then, you just know that he's proud of himself and thinks "that's what I am learning guitar for" Keep it up Marty, we love you and are also proud of what you achieved

As soon as I heard you identify Mixolydian and play it, It immediately clicked as Derek trucks style.
Marty your videos give me so much knowledge thank you sir!
I have been playing guitar for over 20 years. Since Covid hit I have been getting very deep with it. Marty thank you for some of your free training sessions. I listen to them on my walks.
Marty you are the man. My idol. Been watching your videos from the original GJ days. You truly have changed my life and I cannot thank you enough.
Man you make learning new guitar stuff so fun and easy. Wish I’d found your channel a long time ago.
Best descriptor of modes ever, ace !
Marty thanks for all the free content you put up for us I have tried many other guitar sites to find one that would suit me i.e. learn songs as well as theory that I can understand, the modes were a mystery to me before watching this video now getting the gist of it. At 76 finding Marty Music was the best thing for me.............Marty plus trusty looper...cant go wrong. We is Rocking...now back to these modes...engage the old brain + watch video again 😎 Many thanks Marty from Queensland Australia
So excited! I love modes and Marty Music!
Marty! Marty! Marty! I have being learning from you for since the beginning. Thank you! You have really nailed this lesson. Explained in an amazingly easy but effective way. Love the improve lessons. All the cool ideas I get , and the fun to jam along with the lesson. This lesson has taking my guitar playing to a whole new universe. I can’t figure out why everyone else made modes seam so complicated. Now I can practice this in all positions and the possibilities are endeless!
I always tried to get my head around these modes but always got confused but this video really helped a lot. Thank you.
Love your videos Marty. Keep it up buddy!
Marty, you taught me how to play guitar about 4 years ago, and you’re still making great content. Keep it up. Thanks for making it so easy to learn.

I absolutely love the natural minor scale, it's my favorite.... there's just so much amazing stuff you can do with it. play any backing track that's in a major key and just use the relative minor scale over it and it's awesome what you can come up with =P
Great stuff, thanks Marty!
Wow, this was exactly what I was struggling with. I can't wait to know more in the full course. Loves the vid👍

Love this Marty, I’ve learned so much from you.
🎶 Mar-tay! I really enjoy improvisational guitar playing. Making it up as the jam session builds a life of it's own. Learning these "modes" would truly add to this style of playing. Love the lessons, thanks Mar-tay! 🎶... 😎✨
Love your passion and enthusiasm! Keeps the rest of us schmucks going haha. I've known only the pentatonic scale for about....15 years now? A course by you on the modes is exactly what a lot of us need probably lol. Thanks so much for your hard work!
Sounds fantastic, Marty.
Amazing vid as always Marty!

Marty Question - I get that you're playing the same scale over the different chords in the chosen key BUT please clarify what you mean by tonal center - Are you saying to find and focus on the root note of each of the applicable chords within that "same scale"?
Great lessons man I’ve been so confused by what a mode actually was until simplified guitar Ed like this vid bro! Thanks for the insight sensei
