Lots of small animals are treated as “good for children” when in reality they’re kept in neglectful if not abusive conditions :( it sucks, so many kids are sucked into over-responsibility and heartbreak because their parents were taught that small animals are low-maintenance and good for kids, when in reality many of them require as much if not more care than cats and dogs

Did you get them as adults? Did they live 4-5 years with you or that's how old they were when they passed? 7-8 years is considered old age for guinea pigs. Maybe they were inbred. That's also what I'm wondering about with the herd in the video...

@@eva-w well two of them were originally going to be snake food. We originally had one guinea pig named Luna, but then we got the other two from my grandma. When we got the two there was a mother and a baby I would assume to be a few months old. I'm not sure how old the mother was, but we had her for almost four years, making her probably about 7 years old. The child guinea pig became really obese though because it would hog all of the food and ended up having health issues. It only lasted about 3 and a half years total. So the mother died first, then the baby after a short life, and then Luna. Luna was around probably a little over five years but she also had some illness at one point. She recovered from it, but it probably weakened her too. So I guess my estimation might have been a little off.

So cute seeing them go around like little walking eggplants. Also, those who are concerned for their well-being because of the chickens, the chickens consider them friends VERY LIKELY. Chickens are incredibly socially intelligent animals and they are empathetic, they care about their friends, coop buddies and family. Since these piggos live with the chickens, they're very likely extremely close and the chickens consider them coop mates. A chicken will eat a mouse, a lizard, a snake, a frog, etc but that happens with individuals they don't know. Those who have familial relations to their friends and mates, they will not eat. I am curious about how many, if any, of these piggos are neutered. It would be sensible to neuter at least some of them to prevent overpopulation, but they all still look so healthy and happy! Is the area protected from predators? They can't go outside of the property, right? You have such amazing little lawnmowers.

chickens are social, yes, but theyre not like humans-anthropomorphizing them is misleading. chickens will not hesitate to tear apart things that appear weak or things they view as food, and I could see a genuine concern if u had more aggressive chickens. fortunately these seem fine

I would imagine some of them are eaten by predators while out grazing. You can't really protect a cute little piggo from hawks, cats, or foxes all day. Nor should they, IMO. Predators deserve to survive as well, and the occasional predation is probably good to keep the population controlled. Sad to think about, but thinking about an owl dropping dead from starvation is sad too 🤷🏾

Unnecessary baths will result in dry fur coats and skin." - GuineaDad (June 4th, 2020) "Overall, it's best not bathe your guinea pig more than once a month, and most short-haired breeds only require it once or twice a year. Like cats, guinea pigs are excellent self-cleaners and it's rare for them to need bathing." - Katie's Kitty (May 8th, 2020) "They groom themselves by licking their fur, usually starting out by standing on their hind legs so as to better reach their front and back sides. Your guinea pig will keep themselves clean, so you likely won't need to bathe them (unless they get mites or get themselves into a messy situation)." - BeChewy (March 4th, 2015) "Can guinea pigs take baths? More importantly, should you be bathing your piggies? This is a question that many guinea pig owners will ask at some point. If you have never had one before, it can be confusing to know whether or not it's safe to bathe your beloved piggy. When you're stroking that soft fur, you may start to think that a bath will make their coat even softer. The general rule of thumb when grooming these adorable creatures is that you should not bathe them unless a bath is needed for a specific reason. Much like cats, they groom themselves often and prefer to do their own grooming." - Small Pet Select (July 1st, 2020) I looked up "do guinea pigs wash themselves" and "guinea pigs don't wash themselves" to get both narratives, and both results brought me the same answer so...

@@ll5974 males are easily neutered, well easier than females anyway. As for the predators knowing my local crow and magpie population I'd be worried too!

What I love about this is they're just your little buddies. No ulterior motives. just a bunch of great little pals. I sure wish there were more folks like you. I have actually softened a few hearts and changed some minds by just being in the yard and talking to people while I'm looking after the pigeons. People see how clean and friendly they can be with some water and good food, plus a little attention. Most of mine are as clean as Mike Tyson's birds, though nowhere near as expensive. I have great conversations nearly every day and I think it's helpful to expose people to an alternative to what they've been told all their lives. There are also sparrows, mourning doves, mockingbirds and big black Grackles and this time of year, the European starlings migrate to Nevada. All of these are basically outcast birds that are not very popular with normal people, but I'm not a normal people, and so we're just one big happy family of misfits and outcasts.

There are some pretty color morphs in there. And the longer haired Peruvians are quite valuable as far as Guinea pigs go. I love the russet-colored ones, the rusty red, the Himalayan (w the black faces), tricolor, agouti, the peachy tan ones.
