Their whole deal up till now has essentially been: Johnny sees May as an invaluable family member because he raised her since she was a young teenager. May, however, developed a crush on Johnny and has been more or less head over heels for him while he's been clueless. This arcade mode ending is the first time Johnny learns anything about May's crush on him iirc

@@baritonamekian3639 It appears Johnny isn't dense but he can't turn her down nor return her feelings. It seems more like he's hoping she'll gradually come to her senses on her own.
