It's probably that books are a form of conservation per se, and music being performed has very direct impact... the fact that it sounds right now gives it very strong presence of authencity (authencity not only historical but genuine, essential) - especially in performance of such a level.
the plectrum on the lute is fantastic. closer and closer to the arabian influence. so wonderful.

It's really fantastic example of musical recycling because Michał's plectron is an old broken string.

The exceptional Marc Mauillon on vocals!!
Classic and timeless beauty. Very well played.
It’s amazing, languages can’t sustain even a few decades without changing, music, in contrary, can live forever.

I think you wanted to say " the only version with a modern French accent". You can't judge the authenticity of the Middle French accent that you haven't heard or read a description of once in your life.
@Alceste-Resister
I'm french and I can tell he's not singing with a modern accent. The pronunciation is as the old french as you can hear in Québec or from Cajuns in Louisiana at least. It's the older french we know (from XVIIth century). Plus, in the middle age they wrote words as they said it so it helps.
@Unbrutal_Rawr

There's a difference between pronunciation and accent. A French person can be speaking what they and you think is English with English pronunciation and still have a French accent. In fact, I haven't heard of even one French person who had absolutely no French accent in English. Even Canadians whose first language is French have a noticeable accent. It's in the minute details of the sounds. Listen to some regional French languages and you will instantly hear when the person has a a regional instead of a French accent - even the sounds that exist in standard French will sound different.

It's funny how people become pedantic and condescending when they in fact have no idea what they are talking about. Reconstructive linguistics has given scholars a very concrete idea of Middle French phonetics. Mauillon's pronunciation is indeed authentic to Machaut's dialect, based on legitimate linguistic research. Most other singers use modern French pronunciation and it completely destroys the rhyme schemes. Sure, we can't reconstruct accents, but as far as I can tell Salim mentioned pronunciation, not accent.
@Unbrutal_Rawr
+bachmaninoff I don't know what other singers you're talking about, - I haven't heard even one version with a modern French pronunciation. But this is irrelevant, as what Salim said was that this is *the only authentic pronunciation on KZread* , and he has no basis for this claim even if it were incidentally true. He has done or read no research on historical French pronunciation. He simply heard the modern French accent familiar to him and that's why he wrote what he wrote. As I already said, what he should have written is "the only version with a modern French accent" or "that sounds familiar". For all he, you or I know, it could sound completely foreign to Machaut - of whose dialect you are unlikely to have any knowledge in either case. By the way, reconstructing accents is far from impossible for well-attested languages, sometimes those features are explicitly mentioned by contemporaries and other times they can be reconstructed from how the sounds later developed. This is especially the case with Latin and languages derived from it.
Beautiful. Time travel, a moment in space.
A very famous musician, singer and composer in Brazil (Renato Russo), created the modern version of this song using only the instrumental in reference to medieval times. The song is called "A Orgem dos Templários" by the band "Legião Urbana" of which he was a member. I like both the modern version and the original!
I'll be ushering for this terrific group on March 1. Can't wait!

Linda melodia !
KZreadr Farya Faraji uses this as an example of what it might of sounded like with microtones, which were likely to be present still in that time period, really adds a different color to it.

Never say there was no soul in the 14th century. Machaut may not have been able to develop harmony to the extent of Bach or even desPrez, but what he expressed with the musical forms available to him was nothing short of genius.
