Guide to reading the Dune saga!

I’ve noticed a question that frequently gets asked in the comment section of my channel. Should I read past Dune? Should I go further than Children Of Dune? I’ve had this question come up so many times. I’ve decided to make a video on the subject.

    This video is extremely helpful so I just wanted to stop by and say thank you! I’m planning to read the original 6 and simply look up an explanation of the plot line for the extended Dune universe. As much as I want a conclusion for the story, the intelligence of Frank’s writing is the main draw so far through my reading. So sad that Frank left this world just a little too soon!

    I can’t see myself reading past the original 6 books. For myself, the pleasure in reading a book comes from communing with a great mind. Frank Herbert is a genius, and I’m interested in the ideas of the man more than simply fiction in a particular universe.

    wow I saw the movie first, and I tought I'd get into the books, but I never imagined that this universe is so vast, but I'm so happy that I have something to read for some time, it really fills the void that the game of thrones books left in my heart. Thank you for this guide, it was super helpful, and high quality. P.S: You probably created a dune enthusiast

    Great content and personal insight to the saga. I appreciate how you did it without spoiling any major plot points. And loved your idea of “jumping off points” throughout! Thanks for the in depth look at the overall series. With your knowledge, you should do a Breakdown of the “Original” (read true) Saga of 6 books. I would love to hear your thoughts and breakdown of the story and character arcs! Bravo my friend! 👏🏼👏🏼 Glad this was recommended by the algorithm! 🤣👍🏼

    If you compare the expanded Dune saga to the original it isn't nearly as good. If you let it stand on its own, and just look at it like some escapism. They're books are not too bad. If you do read them let me know if you like them or not. I'd be curious to know. Glad you enjoyed the video.

    It's been asked by others, why didn't Brian take the same route that Christopher Tolkien did, in sorting through and publishing all his father's notes on Middle Earth? My only conclusion would be that there wasn't much for Brian to do in this regard. The only way for him to benefit financially was by writing new books. I realise this paints Brian in a rather miserly way, which is unkind of me. I hope to be proven wrong. I'd like to think he wanted to show the fans more of his father's world building in the manner I think of Christopher Tolkien; but time might tell.

    great video, do you think it would be best to read the prequel books first then go on with the other books. Would a person be lost if they don't read the first 6 books of the series then go to the prequel?

  • @filmandpage1138

    Well I think you could do it one of two ways. Read the books in chronological order as they fit in the fictional timeline, or you can read them in publication order. I think ether one of those two ways can work.

    Oh they have no shame. They are still putting out new Dune books that are even more pointless. That’s why I have chapter house as a jumping off point. We will never know for certain what the intended conclusion was for the Dune series.

    Here’s the thing though, Frank never was afforded the conclusion to this story, this is just his son and a partner working on putting out a continuation to give the reader something tangible to experience. Sure, it might be for monetary reasons they continued after that or maybe they just liked adding more to this universe, it’s not exactly shameful to just *make more books* yk? TLDR; if it wasn’t finished, let them take a stab at it yk? Even if it doesn’t live up to what could’ve been…

    Brian is not a patch on Frank's writing. The part where he alludes to using the Golden-Mean had me laughing incredulously. Nothing more than waste paper money-spinners are these extras. Stick to the original 6 Frank Herbert novels and the Dune Encyclopedia that Brian doesn't like but Frank did like would be my advice. Interestingly, I see the 6 canon books as being comprised of four parts. Chapterhouse Dune is my favourite.

    It's a tragic that Frank Herbert passed away so early. I would have loved to have his version of the final end to the Dune saga. I've heard that Brian Herbert will never let the Dune Encyclopedia be reprinted. I don't know if that is true or not. I actually found a copy of the Dune Encyclopedia at Value Village a few years back.

    I can not quite explain why, but for me God Emperor worked as a good jumping off point. I knew that I would end on some kind of cliffhanger anyway, so I think it was the huge gap in time between books four and five that made my brain accept it as an ending xD

  • @Jordblitz
    @Jordblitz4 ай бұрын

    Don't read past Children of Dune lol. You will thank yourself. Thats an exaggeration i guess. Only read past Children of Dune if you REALLY like scifi in general, AND enjoy the philosophical aspect of Herbert's work. If you are like me however, and primarily love dune for the geopolitical, world building lore aspects of the universe, stop after children of Dune. The rest of the serious sacrifices everything that was good in those aspects, for tripy, weird, and lore nonsensical surrealism.

    I think the reason I like God Emperor best is that it is the rare occasion that an author changes format and setting to advance the story. I'd still enjoy it without having read the prior three books, but because it uses them as a root system for a wild new tree, it offers a unique experience.
