Guide to owning a Quaker Parrot/Monk Parakeet: What its like

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Hello everybody todays video is on the pros and cons of owning a quaker parrot and what they are like as pets. Please note I’m not trying to discourage anyone from getting one I’m just trying to prevent people from having an incorrect representation of their personality and behaviour that usually leads to rehoming. They are fantastic birds, really funny and cute, but they are also territorial and aggressive and if not properly trained they can become quite unpleasant.
Hopefully this video helps to have a better idea of what to expect and this video isn’t to say all quakers are like this, there are exceptions this is just my experience and as well the general knowledge about them.
I also forgot to mention that quakers get their name from these seizure like movements they make randomly, so dont be alert if this happens.

    I’ve had a Quaker for the past 18 1/2 years. He was a sweetheart, and passed in January 2021. Please refer to the Quaker Parakeet Society’s legislative page. Currently, Quakers are illegal in 14 states, and restricted in 6 states in the US. They are the best birds and they get a bad reputation that is not deserved. I’ve had birds since 1984 and Quakers are a lot like large birds in a small package. They are delightful.

    It’s been two months and I’m still crying over Jewels. Every little thing puts me into tears. We were soulmates. I had a tiel that passed away after 15 years. It took me months to process his passing as well. Jewels came into my life then and helped me. This time I’m not sure. The expectations would be too high which is not fair to a new bird. Thank you for your kindness and please enjoy your Quaker. They are truly a gift.

    I'm from Argentina, where these parakeets are from. I really love going to parks to watch their antics. Very mischievous, amusing and chatty birds. Also surprisingly hardy, people often think of parrots as tropical birds, but Argentina can get very cold, and there's parts of their natural habitat where it snows in winter. If you have a fruit tree they will come visit your garden too, very lovely chatterboxes.

    I agree with your assessment of not getting a Monk as your first bird. Sadly, most people do NOT investigate what they may be getting into when they get ANY type of pet, in my opinion! Dogs don't get walked or worked with. Birds are expected to talk right away, regardless of species. Cats are expected to be social animals 24/7.

    I adopted a Quaker at age 5 . He was in a rescue for biting and fatty liver disease. He was the most loving and sweetest bird ever. He never bite me. I had him for 5 yrs. Then I got another one. She is 15 now and I got her from a baby. She is also the sweetest bird. Never bit me ever. I then got another one ( their in separate cages ) he is also very sweet and so loving. I've never been bit. They can sing whole songs( 6) they say everything I've taught them using whole sentences. They sing together and answer each other. They are out all day on-top of their cages. (I made a play area on and above cages) They go in their cage at night. If you only give them love and interact with them all the time - they will give love back❤

    My first bird was a quaker and I can say I 100% agree. Most people should not get a quaker if they have no experience with birds. I’d done over half a year of research and I bled a lot those first few months with Fate (my first quaker) but I still have her today and she’s become a relatively well trained quaker parrot. I’ve only even gotten adoptees/rescues so all of my birds were past the 2 year puberty mark and it worked surprisingly well for me with Fate and Bubba (my quaker parrots) and Charlie (my ringneck)

    The mischievous trait to them is one of the things I love about Quakers ❤ My Quaker was actually my boyfriend's bird. When we got together, I was terrified of birds and terrified of her because she could be mean. Ultimately, she ended up loving me, and I am now her person. I wish I could have her free roam, but I have cats, and for her safety, she has to be supervised when she's out. And if no one is around, she is caged. My favorite thing is when she's making mischief and I'll say "Are you being naughty?" She'll shake her head yes and laugh. I love it. She's my little troublemaker ❤ and of course she loves getting kisses

    My Mom and Dad were given a Quaker Parrot from my my Mom’s co-worker who found her abandoned in a park, the lady that found decided she could not raise her as she (Baby) was so cantankerous so she knew my Mom was a bird loving person having parakeets and an African Grey Parrot named Bob. My Mom has a room dedicated to birds so Baby and Bob were free to explore the room during they day, but they would sleep in their cages. Baby passed away a few years ago, we are not sure how old she was, but she became a sweet bird, but only my Mom could put food in her cage without Baby becoming cranky. I was watching this video today with Bob and he loved the video and kept whistling and laughing and saying “that’s cool” in my Dad’s voice. He really took losing Baby hard so I think he was excited to see another bird like his buddy. This was a great video as it points out the true upsides and challenges when owning these little high spirited Birds that will make you laugh all day. My parents had much to learn as their parakeets and Bob were so easy and laid back compared to Baby and I think that may be why she was originally abandoned in a park. Keep up your great videos, this was the first one I watched but I plan to watch more with Bob and I told my Mom she she can watch them with Bob when I am not visiting.

It looks they they are scared of humans because we can not even touch their cage how can I slowly start to train them and what treats would you recommend I use on training.

  • @mimisbirdhouse

    @mimisbirdhouse

    3 жыл бұрын

    First of all; THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESCUING THEM!!! Now rescues are pretty tricky. They can take A LOT longer to gain trust than if you just for a baby bird. I had a rescue cockatiel and she was so scared of everything and people. It took me 8 months for her to even let me touch her. So to put that into perspective your going to have to put in work continuously everyday, take babysteps, and be REALLY patient without rushing anything or you could completely ruin progress. First thing I would do is sit infront of their cage or near it, and just chat with them. Let them get to know you and your prescence. Keep the environment calm and your voice soft and low. After doing this for a about a week id recommend opening the door to the cage along with step 1. Let them know they arnt trapped. They probably wont come out, if they do great but they may just stay in their cage. Step 2: after 2 weeks or when you see they feel more accustom to you being around I would try offering them snacks or treats by hand. Now dont shove your hand in the cage just keep the treat at the door and offer it to them. Try this for a few minutes everyday and see if you can make progress of them even approaching a little bit. You want them to associate your hand with something positive and not something that will hurt them. This step may take awhile depending on how quickly or long it takes them to recieve the treat from your hand. Step 3: once they recieve the treat from you, try to see if they will step onto your hand as they eat. Dont move your hand if they do, they may just do this without realizinng. Allow this to happen many times Step 4: slowly pull your hand out with them after it happens many times. If they hop off or get scared then stop, offer them the treat again or try again tomorrow. You should be able to pull your hand out a bit more everyday. If not, take any progress. Step 5: you got them out of the cage and onto your hand, just chat with them. Do not try to grab or pet them AT ALL until they fully trust you. You will know they full trust you when they see you, come out the cage and volunterily step onto you. Keep in mind; quakers can be SUPER territorial and aggresive birds, so even putting your hand at the door of the cage may cause them to lunge and attack you. Keep your hands safe and make sure the treat isnt super small at first. Maybe a millet or something that allows u to keep at least an inch difference. If they dont lunge anymorr and get accustom to you more you can grab smaller treats to he on the palm of your hand so more of your hand is exposed and they may stand on your hand. Best of luck, let me know how it goes and if u need any more help 🥺

    Im so sorry to hear about that! Its very rare for such a serious incident to occur. Glad to know its growing back. You definitely want to work on weaning him back on solids and pellets. Quakers are birds who tend to be general assholes. While a friend is good keep in mind when you bring another bird home there is a bonding process which can turn out to be a full time job. Some birds dont get along no matter what you do, others take a lot of time to tolerate one another. Other times its an instant click. So you so want a few weeks period where you will be home 90% of the time. I do have a video about if you should get a second bird as well as what you need to know about pairing different species. • @mimisbirdhouse

    @mimisbirdhouse

    5 ай бұрын

    I genuinely do not ever recommend parrots for children. They will never be 100% gentle. You will get bitten and its not possible to avoid. Its very hard to learn and understand a parrots body language, even for us experienced people we still misunderstand and get bit. Birds are moody, one moment they wanna be with you and the next they are telling you to get away. They are loving regardless if treated right. They need tons of out of cage time and interaction. Parrots take time to trust someone so for a few weeks to months this parrot may not want anything to do with your kid and may be scared. It easy to become impatient, try and force your hand and get bit. Parrots are a lot of work and a lot of that work will fall on you as the parent. Expenses like a bigger cage, toys, perches, food, vet bills. No longer being able to travel as easy. When they go to college are they staying at home? Parrots can be one person animals so they may or may not attack strangers. Not trying to scare yeah but this is a very real reality of having a parrot regardless of what the species of parrot is

    With quakers its best to combo them with a bird similar in size and temperment so for example; caiques, conures (particularly sun conures), ringnecks, and other quakers :) If you are to house them together its because they are bonded as partners, otherwise its best to keep them separate if they are different species. You can get one but keep in mine you will have to dedicate hour upon hours of your day to being with them. Having two lessens the load and will make up for their social needs but you will still need to spend lots of time with them.

    Oh my goodness thank you so much for caring for it and taking it in. So baby birds can be difficult to raise but very rewarding. Id suggest looking at this video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m5qHm6uChbqdlqw.html Since its a baby look for an avian vet near by where u can get them checked out definitely want to make sure they are healthy and can help you confirm the age as well as health. As a baby they will basically need to be with you a lot as they still dont know how to walk properly or move. So with my baby sun conure we had her cradled and held all day. I even had to take time off work to raise her. They like to keep warm, i used to toss shirts in the dryer and then gently wrap it around them. Once they get about 4 months old and wean off formula and get to pellets then look into either a big cage or a tree stand. But you can ask me again when it come to that point. Aside from that please feel free to ask as many questions as you want, im really happy to help and would love to hear this babies progress 🥺

I've never had a bird before but I've done a lot of research on how to care for quaker parrots. I want a bird who wants to be around me and would like cuddles. Once I found out about quaker parrots I FELL IN LOVE! Do you think a quaker parrot would be a good fit for me? • @mimisbirdhouse

    I’ll be honest, quakers are really bipolar. Theyll love you one second and then bite you and make you feel really unloved or bad about yourself. Sure they are funny and hyper but if you want an animal for support my best recommendation is a cockatiel They are the kindest most gentle birds. They are very clingy and love to be on you. They nap a lot, arnt that loud (compared to other parrot species) and if you get a male (though females can learn as well but it comes natural to males) they like to whistle and sing to you! They also love getting scratch and smushing against your face ☺️ I actually got my cockatiel a while back for the same exact reason and I have to tell you that it changed my life! Now that I have a quaker and sun, it can make it worse at days 😒 Thats just my personal opinion though, your free to choose any bird you’d like.

    My sister bought me a pair of quakers for my 30th birthday. Sadly, 24 1/2 years later, the survivor of the pair has just died. Quakers make great friends, but I advise that they, like nearly all parrots, need to be in a pair to have the best chance of being happy and healthy. Quakers are "one man" birds. The hours of hilarity I have had watching the cock quaker chase my Mrs around the house were many. It is a good job my other half is a good natured lass; she found it hilarious too. He could put on a display of dive bombing that would have shamed a Stuka pilot and every bodies' dinner was his, but he would graciously let me eat a bit of "his" dinner off my plate. The Mrs simply was not that high on the pecking order and would be chased away from the dining table if the beak meister was out.

    I think I know alot about Quakers. All I can say is EVERY Quaker is a individual. They all have their own unique personalities and cannot be lumped together as the same,and handled the same. That goes for ALL parrots. Best advice for ANY first time adoptor. THINK ! Think long term. Do you live in Apt ? Is your work situation stable,is your finances good , are you living with your mate but things are questionable in your relationship where you may have to move to a place that won't deal with parrots making noise ? Are you old ? Do you like going away alot ? Do you mind doing the EXTRA cleaning if you have a parrot ? Are you afraid of getting bit ? Next one extremely important.... Do you have a Avian vet relatively close to you ? AND.......do you want a parrot because they can talk ? If thats the case, stay clear away from parrots cuz your in it for the wrong reasons. Parrots are much much more then their abilities to speak. Anyway, yes,I have a 25 year old female quaker named Edith. Along with African Greys, Cockatoo's, Conures,Cockatiels,and parrokeets. They ARE NOT my pets. They ARE my family.
