About 5 million foreigners live and work in Spain. Spain is very popular with people from other countries because it has excellent social security benefits, an outstanding work-life balance, great weather, and an excellent healthcare system.
However, expats often need clarification about how the Spanish healthcare system works, if they qualify for public insurance, and if they need to buy private health insurance. This kind of health insurance differs from Spain's travel insurance, which only covers tourists and visitors for travel-related events.
So, before you join the other 5 million expats living in Spain, here is an overview of the country's healthcare system for expats.
In this video, we discuss our personal experiences with health insurance and hospitals in Valencia. This overview of the Spanish healthcare system is meant to help you understand it better and prepare for your move.

Spain has a universal healthcare system, meaning all citizens and residents can access free public healthcare, regardless of income or employment status. This includes expats and short-term residents who pay social security contributions. The National Health System (SNS) provides many services, including doctor's visits, hospital stays, and prescription drugs.
While the SNS is the primary healthcare provider in Spain, there is also a private healthcare sector. Many expats purchase private health insurance in addition to their SNS coverage. This can give them access to shorter waiting times, private hospitals and clinics, and English-speaking healthcare providers.
▶️ Things that we love about our health insurance:
• Quick access to specialists
• Doctors can order a bold test, ultrasound, or scan without asking for the insurance company’s approval
• We didn’t have to take care of any paperwork
• The maximum amount covered per-insured party, for the entirety of the above-mentioned expenses that are incurred abroad is 12,000 Euros.
▶️ Things we’ve learned about our health insurance:
• Follow your doctor's orders especially when you need to come back for a procedure.
• Learning Spanish can greatly help with getting better & faster service
• Download the app of your health insurance provider
• Once you have a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider you can take it to any pharmacy in Spain
• Health insurance acceptance can vary based on your policy terms and the provider network. In-network doctors and hospitals are more likely to accept your insurance
• Dental care is considered separate from general healthcare and individuals often need to seek separate dental insurance or pay for dental services out of pocket
• Take emergency numbers on your phone including the local police fire medical services
• In the Spanish healthcare system, appointments for different medical services are often separate

    Glad to hear you were well taken care of in the Valencia hospital, Paul. One question: could you have used Adeslas for your first year of living in Spain or does it not qualify for the type of insurance you need to be approved for a visa?

  • @EverythingIsBoffo

    @EverythingIsBoffo

    Yes we used our insurance (Adeslas) during the first year for check-ups. The visa requirement is for our insurance to have full coverage, no waiting, no copays, with repatriation. So we’ve been with Adeslas since our move.

I too lost someone dear to my heart with whom I had the plan to retire in Spain. That has propelled my plan to this December. Only when one stares death in the eye, one realizes that life is a gift. • @EverythingIsBoffo

    @EverythingIsBoffo

    We got a list of benefits before we purchased the insurance. The visa we have requires us to get the coverage that has no copayments, no deductible, no waiting for any procedures. But we don’t get any paperwork at all between the renewals of our insurance contract. No explanation of benefits, Everything is covered when we go to the hospitals that take our insurance. If there’s surgery involved, the doctors fill up the paperwork and we just bring it on the day of the operation.

    Hola! My husband and I will be moving to Spain (bought a house and land on the Camino de Santiago). I am curious to know of preventive health care in Spain. As former residents of the US (as are we), I am sure you are aware of the health care culture here. We have our yearly colon screening where our doctors have a kit auto sent to us and we submit our specimen through the mail and then check our results online. Also, I am schedule for regular mammograms and physicals as prescribed by my primary care doctor. Is it similar in Spain in your experience? Also, I am going through the process donating my kidney to my sibling and wanted to know if this will effect my visa application in any way as I know that diabetes, for instance, most likely would result in a visa denial. Thank you so much for your awesome helpful videos. It is so cool to see fellow Pilipinos following a similar dream :)😍

    Hello! I haven’t had a colonoscopy yet but our friends who did LOVED the process. The laxative they got cleaned them out in 1 go, they didn’t get the runs. And then they were done. I got my mammogram results in 10 mins to bring to my doctor. It’s very very efficient and thorough(I guess because I have private insurance). Most blood tests are ready in 2-3 days. I’m not sure if kidney donation will disqualify you, but reach out to www.innoinsure.com/visainsurance/everythingisboffo to see. Good luck kabayan!
