Kylie has the best tone and cleanest playing I have heard on KZread ! Not quite sure how she achieves that great tone on even modest mandolins. Magic ? :-)

Kylie’s left and right hand coordination is really good , that’s the difference in good mandolin player an average player

I am learning on my first mando and would like to upgrade to something good pretty soon. This video is very helpful, especially the point made about the points of the F-style serving to balance the instrument. I’m learning on an A and it’s tough, need to rig up a good strap. That said, somehow the pancake style speaks to me. There are also variants of the A style made with points by Atkinson and perhaps other makers that I think are nice. But ultimately, the decision will come down to sound plus playability.

Thx for the video, I saw the Eastman choices first which was also very useful. You did not mention the Octave Mandola, which I am also interested in. The custom❤ handmadea Mandolins with aa oval hole such as Fylde and Hathway and Ashbury in A style from UK. I have bought a Paramount A style with electric Chinese for £65, sounds good and has good intonation, I am having my tech adjust the action. I live in Thailand and the one for sale in a shop you mention is an Eastman MD315. Not popular shop wise here. Paul Hathway makes great ones in London used by Mcartney, Bill Bailey, Genesis, and others at the same price as the Eastmans. Hobgoblin London stocks them. Obviously a step up from a Chinese factory build. Perhaps you should look into these for the channel.😊😊😊😊😊

I have an Eastman MD 515, very similar to the 615 but without a builtin pickup. Eastnan makes very nice mandos and guitars, acoustic and electric.

Well done, Kylie! When I made the move from guitar to mandolin, I bought an Eastman MD304 (A-style, oval hole). I bought an A-style, both because it was less expensive, and because I prefer the simple look of it, compared to the more expensive and more ornate F-style. I loved it when I first got it, and now I love it even more, as the sound seems to have opened up a bit, and it projects more. Who knows, maybe I'm just a better player now than I was... nah, that can't be it! Anyway, the Eastman MD304 is a great choice for anyone's first mandolin, IMHO! 🙂

Love my Eastman MD304. I had the opportunity to play other styles, but always came back to the A-style oval hole.

Your video is a very good introduction to mandolin types. I played guitar for about 45 years and decided to get my first mandolin about 10 years ago. I did a lot of research before deciding to get an inexpensive Epiphone M-20. It cost about $120 (case was extra). I was used to setting up violins and guitars so I did the setup on it myself. This mandolin is very well made, has great action and is very loud but well balanced for such an inexpensive instrument. I used it all the time despite getting more expensive mandolins since.

My mandolin is custom Brier Road, made by Nicholas Lenski. Its a-style round whole, but wood is padauk instead of maple. I mostly play classical music. Love this instrument!

First I got an Eastman 305, nice mandolin, about three years ago. Then the fever hit, about three months later I sprang for a Northfield FS5. Then about a year ago I added an Eastman MDA 815 mandola....and now I'm getting a bug for an Eastman El Rey mandolin...hope the fever breaks soon 😄

Looking at the a and f styles, there shouldn't be a lot of tonal difference. They have the same scale lengths and the vibrating area of the top is very similar. There's a bit more surface area on the f style, but given how narrow the swirl and spike are, I doubt they vibrate much. The angles could result in a funny, barely perceptible overtone production, similar to square guitars.

There are still similarities indeed, and it's not an entire different instrument of course. Still, they have different body shapes so nuanced differences in tone are not rare. An OM guitar also sounds a bit different from a parlor 😉

If the mandolin is made of solid wood ( spruce and maple) not laminate, it should sound great. The rest is up to you.
