Note: Regs now only require test at 1x delta t and for a Type AC rcd (regardless of the actual type).

Yes this is true, it gives more detail in Guidance Notes 3 regarding the unknown damage and wear and tear caused on the RCD by making it trip so often. I am creating these videos to show the basics, step by step for those who are just starting on their journey to becoming an electrician. I am hoping people with experience and knowledge like yourself and I can help the new trainee electricians build a find foundation of knowledge before getting into the more complex and complicated topics. They must walk before they run! Thank you for your input and thank you for sharing.

Now that type A is the standard rcd's to be tested rather than when it used to be type AC rcd's, do i need a different function on my tester? I can't seem to find a setting on it which will change between the different types of rcd's

The RCD setting on most tester will test any type of RCD. You only need to change the mA setting that matches the mA rating of your RCD

The recommended functional test frequency is every 6 months. To be completed by the home owner or installation user. Stated in Regulation 514.12.2

I'm confused if you're doing an RCD life test. And there are different ones when it comes to radios/ring. Which one do you do If ring s using the plug socket. And radials. Is using crocodile tips. Can anyone please explain. I thought RCD is one test.

See post above. The test you have performed is incorrect and is only testing the RCD for the DB and is not recorded on the sheet you have used. The RCD test for a circuit should be carried out at the furthest point of the circuit. This will take into account the circuit resistance R1+R2 and Rn. The test you carried out is only using the external impedance Ze at the DB and not the fault circuit as a hole. The aim of the test is to take the total resistance of the circuit, the fault path, which will determine how quick the RCD will trip under fault conditions, the higher the resistance the slower the trip time. Therefore the RCD test requires to be done on every circuit and recorded in the location you used. The test you carried out is recorded on sheet 2 under, Main switch / Switch Fuse / Circuit breaker / RCD, under "If RCD main switch". I would take this done before someone gets hurt and is traced back to your KZread. I am retired now but I am an Accredited Electrician.

Theres no need to test each mcb, you're testing the trip time of the RCD and therefore only need to carry out the test once and that can be done at the RCD itself

Is that what occurred. Tripped it at each breaker ?
