Guide to Bangkok's Khlong Taxis & How to Travel the Bangkok Canals - Bangkok, Thailand Travel

Khlong is the Thai word for canal and Bangkok has long been referred to as the "Venice of the East" because of its many canals. You can still travel throughout the city using canals today.
In this TravSight Guide to Bangkok's Khlong Taxis we'll show you the different routes, how to ride a Bangkok canal taxi, and tell you who shouldn't ride one of these boats.
Let's get started and get around Bangkok "the old fashioned way."

I have used these Klong boats many times . Yes they are smelly ! We used the stop by the Bobae Wholsale cloths Market /Prince Palce Hotel . I also like to explore all the little pathways that are often underused . It helps that my wife is Thai -To know where are heading .I agree your advice about being Agile /nimble to board/Leave Quickly .

I wish I had known about this option before traveling to Bangkok. I did take ferries and long tail boats exploring. But I didn’t see these taxis. And yes I fell my first time boarding. Then I figured out what to do to avoid future accidents. No harm. Just an adventure to share. Thank you for excellent info.

Definitely give it a try. It's a cheap and rather quick way to get around, plus some different view of Bangkok.

The pier maps and signs are in Thai/English and once you're on you'll be told how much to pay in English. But that's all you really need.

Which one to catch from pratunam to Thonburi

  • @Travsight

    @Travsight

    11 күн бұрын

There isn't a khlong taxi service for Thonburi. The NIDA Line runs east from Pratunam to Bangkapi. The Golden Mount Line runs from Pratunam to Phan Fa Lilat, which is near Wat Saket and Khaosan Road. The Phadung Krungkasem route is newer and connects Hua Lamphong Railway Station to Thewet on the Chao Phraya River.

hello! i'm planning to move hotels from Ramkhamkhaeng to Pratunam and thinking to try the canal boat, i can walk and hop on/off boats well i'm sure, but do you think it's possible to take our suitcases with us to the boats?

  • @Travsight

If your confident in your ability to hop on and off at the piers you should be fine with as much as a rolling carry-on and backpack. If you have a larger suitcase it'll most likely be difficult to disembark.

Don't do that in rush hour, please. It only will annoy the commuters. Anyway, at all times these services are not meant to deal with tourists and big luggage.

From just after 3:04 the boarding process is explained. At 3:09 you can see how fares are paid to the linemen/attendants.

Each pier has a sign displaying the name of the stop. Also, the linemen/attendants are pretty good about remembering who is getting off at which stops.

Hello I will be in the RAMKHAMHAENG AREA/ Bang kapi I know the canal is very close. Can I take the canal boat mostly to get around? Does the canal routes show up on Google maps or only buses and trains?

Welcome! Where in Ramkhamhaeng? The ARL station is close to the Boat pier and very convenient. But "Ramkhamhaeng area" is larger... so better be more specific.

@@justice4all997 Ua 'alaykumu s-salaam ua rahmatu llahi, A very nice place you chose, even it is a little bit far away from downtown. Yes, Canal boat on Khlong Saen Saep is very convinient, it has a stop directly beside the Mall Bangkapi (if you come with ARL you can even get off Ramkhamhaeng and go with the boat eastward [don't know if Mall pier or the actual Bangkapi pier is closer to your place]). Markets yes there are close and around Mall Bangkapi. And inside the Mall there is a nice food court. My favourite mosque is three stops by Yellow line close to Hua Mak ARL. but close to the Mall is Fathulbaree mosque that is quite big. Have a nice stay - wa salaam.

You can use Khlong Saen Saeb to reach a few tourist spots because it generally runs parallel to Sukhumvit Road. You can take it Asoke, Nana, and even go as far as Siam/Ratchaprasong. Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem is less touristy but it does stop a Hua Lamphong, which is a short walk from Wat Traimit and Chinatown. Or you can take it as the slow and scenic route to the giant Buddha at Wat Paknam.
