    Ahh, medieval/renaissance! That brings back many memories. Sadly, I missed the 90's by about 2 years, but there was still enough traces of it in the early 2000's for me to enjoy..I love how you just skipped over the rockabilly portion of that video ;-D

    Such nostalgia. I have a Jeannie Nitro dress still and I had one other, but it was ruined about seven years ago. When I was in high school, a lot of my things were thrown away by my parents, so unfortunately, my beautiful 90s wardrobe went bye bye (although I didn't have a lot of stuff. I had to save my money forever just to add one outfit to my closet). I had the morbid threads corset top you showed in the video with the purple panels, but I had red panels instead and a matching skirt to go with it. I still love clothes like this, but I tend to only wear it during the Winter now because I can't handle heat the way I could fifteen to twenty years ago.

    The deathrock style in that video seems to be based on German artist Nina Hagen in the same way that the punk& post-punk(batcave) styles are based on Siouxie Sioux. She even makes the weird grimaces that Nina did(and still does). In Europe you would see people dressed like that in the alternative/gothic circles,even the conical hair, but I don't think anybody would call them deathrockers as it is not a familiar term here.

    Love this video! And I was one of those early Goths that was very 'fluid' in my styles. I would wear jeans, Goth styled black tees and punk jackets with Docs one day and then long ball gowns with embroidery the next. One of the things I used to love about the Goth clubs in the late 80s early 90s was that no person had one exact style that was deemed 'Goth'. You could see so many styles and types and it was all cool... A friend used to wear the "Fairy Goth' style. Wings and all... Sort of Glam meets Goth and it worked for her. She was actually quite creepy as she would throw candy at the boys in the club! LOL I try not to judge on what is and is not Goth. For me it is more about how you feel with your place in this world rather than how you dress... The difference was in the 80s it was more 'hands on'. You would buy clothes (mostly from the thrift shop) and embellish them to make them your own style. I could not imagine spending 100 dollars plus to buy clothes like I saw in the 90s. Sometimes we even learned to sew (even if it was badly done) to create our clothes. I still have a mermaid style skirt that a friend stitched up for me and we used no patterns or anything. Just wrap it, said "Yeah this will work!" and slapped it together! LOL Despite saying that I use to love The Black Rose and The Dark Angel online stores. There were a lot of great fashions that used to come out of the UK and Germany back in the day. Again I love your vids. Nice to hear your memoirs. :)

    I really enjoyed watching this! Oh memories, I love the medieval Goth style and mourned when my favourite shop The Black Rose in Camden turned rockabilly! Some of these classic looks definitely inspired what I make today. So pleased that some of my personal favourite brands, Raven, Phaze, Laughing Vampire etc are still going. Don't know if you've heard of Dracinabox? They have some great trad Goth stuff too. I also own the odd retro Tripp NYC piece and recently bought a tiny way too tight irresistible Morticia style Lip Service dress on eBay (luckily I can adjust it on the good old sewing machine) 😉

    OH man! So nostalgic! As a teen of the 90s, I used to love going into places like Hot Topic and buying things from like Morbid Threads! In fact, when I turned 17, I begged my mother to let me buy these Morbid Thread PVC platform heel and toe black Victorian boots! Lace up and all! And I still have them today! They do still make Lip Service and Tripp but I feel like it definitely went another direction after the 90s. Some of it is still cute though.

    Didn’t even realize one of my favorite dresses is a Jeannie Nitro design until you mentioned that trim and showed some examples! It’s a gorgeous black brocade with slits up the front and back and the same style of sleeves as your last example photo. I cut one of those perfectly tied satin bows off the bodice though, it had gotten too mangled by years of sitting in storage and I was in too much of a rush to iron it the first time I wore that dress out.

I apologize for all of the typos in my last post. Damn auto correct. Yes, I have to say I definitely fell into the romantic/vampiric side of the subculture so it was crushed velvet and lace galore in my closet. Even though my mom wasn't fond of my style I managed to coerce her to look in thrifts stores for me as well. I trained her well. She still finds me cool stuff like vintage silk opera gloves and lace blouses to this day, haha!

    Memories! I was somewhat acquainted with Ray Buttigieg of Cykxtees when he was just a poet and musician. He was probably one of the most driven, self-assured people I have ever met. He seriously believed 100,000% in all his projects, every poem, every idea was part of a plan and a long thought process. And he made a point of telling everyone he met about everything he was doing. He had a million ideas about everything. I used to have a copy if his poetry book Pastorale (don't know if I still do). So, years later, long after we were out of contact, I came across the store Funhouse on 8th St. I was amazed but not suprised to see the beautiful cykxtees fashions. I knew it was him as "cykx" was his word. It's great that you brought it up.

    My fav period medieval goth stuff from the Montréal scene was from a designer named Anne Larochelle who still has an online shop. It was carried in tons of goth shops like Siren, Cruella, and Trivium. Sadly most of those stores are gone, or don't carry much goth stock anymore. There was also a local medieval tavern and a couple clothing shops that were just amazing too. I miss the 90s for that! Velvet or brocade with laces up the front and bell sleeves was such a fun look. I still have my Tripp shorts/pants (ugh I know!) and ankle length bondage kilt. Ha, I see a Lip Service dress that I used to have in your montage! The one with the buckle shoulder straps. Thanks for the tip about the patterns, I'll have to keep an eye out! By the way, love your red eye shadow in this video :)

It sucks that so many of these brands went under. That medieval garb was beautiful. I think it's great that Begotten decided to go the pattern route. Years on people can still have access to the dresses they may have owned way back when.

    Death rock was indeed a type of goth. The 40 years of goth video got the two toned hair spot on. Understand that people weren't used to neon colors at the time. The clothes were usually accented with black clothing or even a military look and all held together with safety pins. It looked fabulous under black lights. Sometimes people would wear all white. White suits for both men and women with either big black hair (Robert Smith) or big platinum or that 2 toned blonde hair you saw. Crimped hair added to the look as well.

    Tripp still now and again comes out with not Hot Topic style pieces. I was fortunate enough to procure a stunning white bondage jacket. Straps around the back, black details, and a heavily structured silhouette. I got it on eBay so I'm not sure how old it is. Most of their stuff looks like an ICP concert exploded, but when they do make good stuff, it is very good.

    Also, Lip Service's quality really took a trip down the chocolate speedway. Now the hems fray and come undone if you even think about washing them in anything but Woolite. Sad, because they tend to be a bit on the more expensive side. I do enjoy Spin Doctor's styles. They tend to lean a bit more steampunk, but they're good quality and look nice. I have a gorgeous brown and black striped mini skirt with corset detailing and a tiny bustle. It's so lovely!

    Not sure where you got your information that lolita is an evolution of kinder goth but that just isn't accurate. Some people may think the aesthetic has similarities but that doesn't dictate origin. Lolita is an evolution of Japanese street fashion and historical period dress. Otome and Rococo fashion influenced the 70's predecessor of modern lolita fashion. There is a subculture attached to lolita based around the fashion but lolita is way older than kinder goth.

  • @angelabenedict

    @angelabenedict

    7 жыл бұрын

    I got my information via living through it. Lolita started in Japan in the 70's to early 80's and glimpses of it started appearing here in the 90's. It was adopted by the alternative scene and has seen many incarnations-- Most notably the grunge rock 'dolly' look donned by Courtney Love and Drew Barrymore in the early 90's. As time went on I started seeing the look more and more pop up in the Goth scene and it was referred to as 'Dolly Goth, Kindergoth, Kinderwhore' etc however that interpretation was less polished and pressed as the 'Lolita' garb of Japan and more tattered and 'spooky' by way of being put together by various vintage pieces and deconstructed. Lolita really became more of a thing in the late 90's to early 2000's when 'alternative subcultures' began having more of a presence on the web. As the decade went on that's when we saw the Lolita we know today-- The one represented in the video because by that time there were tons of websites giving us a full glimpse into Lolita, VisualKei and JRock and the style became much more readily available and American Gothic clothing designers were catching on.

  • @Lilnaomi3

    Angela Benedict Ok, that would explain how you spoke about it. I would never relate anything Love or Barrymore did to lolita in the slightest. The western take on the fashion is massively different from the origins. Your clarification makes sense though. Typically many in the lolita subculture won't consider those things to be within relation to each other. I can see how one could take inspiration from a style and interpret it that way.The outfit referenced in the video would not fall under the spectrum of Japanese lolita. I could see how someone would say it was an outfit influenced by it. As the standard fashion though the western take doesn't meet the traditional criteria. Thank you for responding. Since I haven't had the same experiences your information gave me a bit more clarity. My lolita comm doesn't really have much overlap with the Philly goth scene and obviously the Philly and NY experiences are very different.

  • @angelabenedict

    @angelabenedict

    7 жыл бұрын

    Lilnaomi3 Exactly :) It's an interpretation of Lolita and one doesn't replace the other, it's just not the first time we've seen the look within the subculture. Lolita definitely came first as a whole but as far as styles within the American Gothic subculture, the first incarnation was an interpretation or reimagining based on what was readily available. We were still very DIY in the 90's because stuff was expensive and we had improvise with what we had. I use to go to Philly every now and again back in the day. Shampoo, Evolutions, trips to Digital Underground etc and even though we were only a few hours drive apart there were noticeable differences within our subcultures. The same but different. I always found that really cool.

    I believe she said that. I totally agree with you ,however the link is undeniable. Almost everyone Ive known with few exceptions drew and still draw inspiration from both. Ive never met a lolita purist in person. Most people want to wear a pretty dress and are indifferent to all the rules.

    Loved the video. Goth was never really big where I live (AZ), but we did have a small goth community down in Phoenix. Still do, but it's even smaller now. Most goths were teens and hung out in the malls, mainly Metrocenter, which was one of the largest (it's a dead mall now). I've seen most styles of goth, and lots of DIY. I consider myself nu goth, but do have a few pieces of traditional. I do have one pair of Tripp NYC pants that I got from Goodwill about 5 years ago. Split tartan, blue and green, a little too big for me, but that's OK. I had to order new straps for them since thy were missing. I got them for 10 dollars. (Jan Griffiths).

    It's so interesting your take on the fashion of goth. I remember trying to open a record store in the mid-90's with some friends and this was the time when the whole fetish scene was creeping into the fashion; long story short, it was never opened because the overhead was too high on the clothing due to the cost of the materials. We disagreed on the focus of the store so I ended up pulling out of the business before it got started. If you use archive.org and search for susperia.com during the mid-90's, you'll find the beginnings of the business (along with some cool photos)

    I'm so excited about this video. '90s Romantic Goth was so imaginative and creative. Lots of lovely fabrics, too. This has really got me wanting to hunt down lots of '90s and early '00s Romantic Goth stuff. I've got a Funhouse dress - black brocade with double sleeves and a Gothic arch on the front. It's a bit short on me, but I just use that to wear with fancy granny boots. Black with red/burgundy (faded now) trim and a square neckline. I miss the square necklines! The Cykxtees website is glitchy as anything for me :( I got into Goth in the mid/early '00s and I've got a few Laughing Vampire, Omen and Raven things that are in that '90s Romantic style - I'm not sure when they're actually from as they're all from eBay over the last 10+ years. Big bell sleeves, square and peasant necklines, black velvet, little bows as decorations, fantasy styling... I like all that sort of thing, but a lot of made-for-Goth Romantic Goth these days are all Victoriana, which I like too, but it's got a bit same-y and overly Steampunk-influenced too. I like that sort of thing, but it's got to the point where it's hard to find anything that's not Nu-Goth or Goth-meets-Steampunk. These days MoonMaiden, Dark Star and Dracula Clothing supply my spooky fix for fantastical Romantic Goth.

I wanna say it was from Lip Service because I remember that brand well from the later '90s era, but I'm not sure. I always wore very long dresses back then. Lots of bell sleeves and layers of fabric and front corset style ties on dresses. I don't even remember how to move around in all that fabric with boots on now. Getting old sucks :(

    in Detroit to Lansing to Bland Rapids , there was a bohemian, gypsy goth thing happening. it's spiritual mom was the character Star from the movie Lost Boys. the colors were dark, with pops of blood red,granny boots , scarves and traditional pale face, blood red lips. hair was long and teased, krimped, curled and unnatural shades of red, black or black with chunks of red, white,yellow or what have you. By 1998 or so the look faded away. did you see anything like that in your part of the world?

    +Angela Benedict You're welcome! And yeah, of course! Your goth-related videos and stories of your life are always something interesting!^.^ Also, in response to one of your videos, I'm sorry that your elementary school teacher-Ms. Post-mistreated you.. That was utterly disgraceful.. and also sorry that you would suffer panic attacks here and there.. I had anxiety when I was younger as well.. If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm always here. But anyways, yeah, so your parents didn't get concerned, which is nice! You're expressing yourself by being creative with your lifestyle/fashion, and that's something really great to learn! It's nothing wrong to reveal your uniqueness! I do that, too (my Pinterest pinwalls and school binder with many drawings cut and pasted to it are enough proof, ahah^^;), and sometimes I embrace it, while others I think twice about it, but that's just me:/ And okay! Can't wait to see new content up! Always something exciting!^.^
