Something you have to consider when looking at job earnings is the cost of the necessary education. In some cases that makes a huge difference, for example you won't be a doctor before the age of ~30 and have to pay off your college debt plus your own doctor's office before you break even, when you also could have been working a trade job for like 14 years at that point. So total earnings lifetime might be a lot closer than monthly earnings suggest.

reminder for everyone: this is in euros, it is not dollars. In Spain the average salary is around 1000 euro per month (as a Walmart or any supermarket employee) meanwhile in the US is around 4 times more. There are only a few jobs in Spain where people can get a monthly salary of over 3000. (so 3000 euros in spain is like 11000 dollars in the US monthly). So it is kinda sus that there are so many jobs that are over 3000 or 4000 in this higher or lower. I laughed so hard when I saw 4883 euros as a teacher. Based on all the spanish teacher that I had they made around 1500 euros. (Maybe it is another European country) Of course there is a reason, in Spain the food is cheaper, the rent (400 to 500 euro) is cheaper, ... Basically, almost everything is cheaper.

One has to make it through arguably one of the worst engineering degrees to be able to design the systems the electrician installs. The other requires some trade school or an apprenticeship at most. Being an Australian, It’s kinda weird seeing how low the pay is for some of these very technical jobs. Like you can make $100k AUD comfy just by being a tradie over here, yet you guys become a lawyer and earn about the same on average. Heck, if you stay at a fast food chain for long enough you’ll be on like $70k even.

Keep in mind Australia has a higher cost of living. You can make the equivalent of 100k AUD as a tradie by working at a large car company or potentially make more by owning your own shop. But yeah, salaries might be lower in general

  • @lewesc

You gotta factor in your conversion rate guys, 100K AUD is only like 67,680.70 Euros or 74,586.50 US dollars. Which while it’s still higher something tells me your taking city pay which isn’t an accurate scale to use here because these are averages so they factor in more rural areas as well

  • @Robiness

@@lewesc Yeah the cost of living is wildly different across Europe. If that's how they made those averages it's gonna be very inaccurate to anything. Also it seems it's just plain averages not medians? So yeah.

His thinking about the electricians are kinda flawed. Most of the fittings are done with a short training period and so the risk factor amounts for more money that it should be. While you don't want to know what electrical engineers have to go through. If you thought the circuit u did in your higher secondary or even high school, we're hard. Then the basic electrical engineering that first year engineers have to go through is exponentially harder, plus it's just first year basics and electrical engineers have to go through more advanced classes which is only one out of probably 6 subjects excluding practicals, for 4 years. And there's a screening before and after you study for engineering, exams that you have to be in the top percentile to get into a good college, and job vacancies that you need to be in the top percentile of the already screened top percentile. Not saying the fitters' job isn't difficult but objectively speaking that's just how it works when it comes to high paying jobs. Electrical and mechanical engineers probably have the most difficult courses, not saying the rest aren't difficult.

Electrical Engineer: Designs the systems that power everything from your little smartphone to literal city blocks. Puts in countless hours doing circuit analysis and circuit design. Can almost assuredly write programs in Python, MatLab, etc. Works with clients to ensure satisfactory system requirements. Electrical Fitter: Puts in countless hours assembling and maintaining that system. Generally has the more dangerous job. Ludwig: English Major (???) The point is the difference between an engineer and a fitter is the fact that the engineer designs the systems that are being implemented. Electrical engineers specifically have to design circuits to fit specific requirements, which is a lot of mental work. Fitters set up and maintain the final product, which requires more physical labor/risk but much less mental gymnastics. An analogy might be the difference between a person who designs a CPU down to the bitwise operations versus a person putting it into a computer (say a factory worker or PC enthusiast). Granted electrical fitters face relatively more danger, but you can see how these things would be very different. Engineer --> Designs the system Fitter --> Puts the system together / takes care of the system Edit: It is worth noting that the fitters wouldn't have a job without the engineers' designs.

@@joshshultz1250 electricians obviously have to understand how circuits work and how to analyze circuits. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear in my first comment. What I meant was that their jobs are very different, one designing and the other implementing.

Uhmmm, Electrical Engineer here Ludwig, we don’t just put up wires. That would be an electrician. We go through probably the most brutal college training there is (besides a physician), for 4-8 years, typically getting about 5 hours of sleep average a night (that includes weekends and the work/internships over summer), just so we can understand how the world works. So that we can get a job designing computers and phones, or the power grid, or manufacturing lines/equipment, or basically anything else you throw at us. Which we then have to learn from scratch, because all our college experience only covered the bare minimum. At the end of it all we are living encyclopedias of STEM information, with comprehension ability even higher than the breadth of our knowledge. We can do everything ourself, electrician work, yes, and we do do so on occasion, but much much more. Is it dangerous being the guy wiring stuff at a high height? Absolutely! Is it just as dangerous designing and testing the high current AC equipment before it is ever installed by those guys? Yes! Am I about to be roasted for any small inaccuracy in my subjective statement or told I’m being too defensive, also probably yes. But, for anyone who isn’t familiar with it, that’s what an engineer (specifically an electrical one) is, and I can honestly say I don’t think there are many traditional careers that are more deserving to be paid well and more justified to be proud of. Along with medical careers, becoming an engineer is probably the most guaranteed method to make a difference in the world. (Which if anyone is thinking I’m only saying because I am one, that’s why I became one to begin with).
