This is the Tree Of Joy which is situated on the roundabout at the bottom of St. Julians Avenue, here on Guernsey, in the Channel Islands. It is made up of many beautiful strings of lights, with a snowflake shaped cross on top which has some twinkling lights on it. The whole Tree Of Joy is fitted to the mast on the roundabout and is 98ft (30m) high. It is fitted and turned on in December and normally turned off around the 6th January, then taken down.
The Tree of Joy campaign is run every year by the Rotary Club of Guernsey and is supported by the public at large and various organizations. Anyone who wishes to donate, goes to one of many participating locations (shops, banks, etc.) to collect a tag. A Tree of Joy tag, identifies a specific needy Guernsey child only by first name, age and gender. The tag also includes, from those who best know the specific child, details of the suggested Christmas present. The guideline maximum cost of the present is £25, although many suggested presents actually cost less than this. After selecting a tag, that person then purchases the present suggested from whichever source they wish, wraps it, attaches the tag and delivers it back to the participating location. These presents are then collected by members of the Rotary Club of Guernsey, who ensure they get to the relevant child for Christmas.The Tree of Joy campaign has now been running in the Bailiwick for 27 years and 14,000 Guernsey children have received a present on Christmas Day when perhaps they would otherwise not have done.
This was filmed on a few days during December 2021 and the 4th January 2022, using the hyperlapse feature on my Samsung Galaxy S7 phone and using my Panasonic DMC-FZ45 camera for the video footage of the top of the Tree Of Joy.
